Omar Abdullah, vice president of the National Conference (NC), is contesting the Ganderbal Assembly seat, a constituency with deep personal and familial significance, having been represented in the past by his grandfather Sheikh Abdullah, father Farooq Abdullah, and himself. Ganderbal, located in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, is one of the Assembly segments forming the Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency. Major political parties contesting in the constituency include the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC), the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (JKPDP), and Congress.

J-K LG Manoj Sinha orders magisterial probe into Ganderbal encounter

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Friday ordered a magisterial probe into the encounter in Ganderbal district in which one alleged terrorist was killed by security forces. Several mainstream leaders, including Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti, had raised questions about the encounter that took place on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday. In a post on X, Sinha said, "I have ordered a thorough and impartial magisterial inquiry into Arhama, Ganderbal incident. The inquiry will examine all aspects related to the incident and ensure that justice is served". The family of the slain youth -- Rashid Ahmad Mughal -- had claimed that the deceased had no links to terrorism. Abdullah had said on Thursday that, "I believe the claim of the family should not be dismissed out of hand. At the very least this encounter needs a transparent & time bound probe with the facts made public". "Any attempt to obfuscate or delay the announcement .

J&K: Terror attack in Ganderbal kills doctor, 6 labourers at tunnel site

A doctor and six labourers were killed when terrorists struck a tunnel-construction site on the Srinagar-Leh national highway in Jammu and Kashmir's Ganderbal district on Sunday, officials said. The unidentified terrorists carried out the attack when the labourers and other staff working on the tunnel project at Gund in Ganderbal had returned to their camp late in the evening, the officials said. They said the terrorists -- believed to be at least two -- opened indiscriminate fire on the group of labourers that included both locals and non-locals. While two labourers died on the spot, four others and the doctor succumbed to their injuries subsequently, the officials said, adding that five people are undergoing treatment for injuries. The deceased have been identified as Dr Shahnawaz, Faheem Nazir, Kaleem, Mohammad Hanif, Shashi Abrol, Anil Shukla and Gurmeet Singh.
