Clean Ganga: NMCC approves 5 projects worth Rs 73.39 crore for UP

The National Mission for Clean Ganga has approved five projects worth Rs 73 crore for Uttar Pradesh in its 56th executive committee meeting held in New Delhi, an official statement here said Saturday. Rajeev Kumar Mital, Director General of the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) chaired the meeting. "The approved projects are pivotal to the improvement of the river's ecosystem as these ensure minimised level of pollution in Ganga, thereby maintaining its cleanliness and ensuring its conservation," the statement said. The committee approved the project 'Establishment of Secretariat for Smart Laboratory on Clean Rivers (SLCR) at Varanasi' presented and controlled by IIT (BHU) under the supervision of the NMCG it said. Four J'khand DMs fined for submitting incomplete reports on Ganga pollution

The National Green Tribunal has imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 each on four district magistrates in Jharkhand for submitting "incomplete reports" regarding the prevention and control of the Ganga's pollution. The National Green Tribunal has taken up the matter of abatement of pollution in the Ganga and its tributaries and had sought specific information on the matter from Jharkhand, Bihar, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. In February, the panel had imposed costs of Rs 25,000 on Jharkhand after noting that no report was filed from any district magistrate, who are heads of District Ganga Protection Committees. In an order passed on April 10, a bench of National Green Tribunal Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava noted that compliance reports were received from Sahibganj, Dumka, Ranchi, Rajmahal, Giridih, Dhanbad, Bokaro and Ramgarh districts. 128 MLD domestic, industrial wastewater flowing into Ganga in Varanasi: NGT

The National Green Tribunal has observed that around 128 MLD wastewater is discharged into the Ganga in Varanasi. The green panel was hearing a matter regarding the discharge of domestic and industrial wastewater into the Ganga in Varanasi, thus hurting religious sentiments. A bench of National Green Tribunal Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava and Judicial Member Justice Sudhir Agarwal noted a report by the Varanasi Municipal Corporation, according to which around 28 million litres per day (MLD) of untreated sewage is flowing into the Ganga. NGT seeks report on Ganga pollution from 10 districts in West Bengal

The National Green Tribunal has sought reports from the district magistrates of 10 West Bengal districts, across which the Ganga and its tributaries flow, on pollution caused due to discharge of sewage and industrial effluents. The NGT has also sought information about the remedial action taken by the authorities. Supreme Court refuses to entertain plea on cleaning of rivers Ganga, Yamuna

The Supreme Court on Monday refused to entertain a plea seeking directions to clean rivers Ganga and Yamuna and monitor the action plan for their rejuvenation, saying there is a specialised tribunal for this. A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices P S Narasimha and J B Pardiwala asked the petitioner to approach the National Green Tribunal (NGT) with his grievances. 190 of 1,080 industries polluting Ganga shut down, says govt

The Centre on Monday said of the 1,080 industries causing pollution in Ganga in five states, 190 have been closed while 165 are still not complying with norms. Of the 165, closure orders have been issued to nine and show-cause notices has been served to 156 grossly polluting industries, it said. Responding to a question in Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Jal Shakti Bishweswar Tudu said about 280.17 million litres per day (MLD) effluents is being discharged into river Ganga main stem having BOD load of 9.68 tons per day. According to the inventorization of 2020-21, 1,080 Grossly Polluting Industries (GPIs) operating in five river Ganga main stem states namely Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal were inventoried in consultation with concerned state pollution control boards, Tudu said in a written response.
