A recent survey by the International Diabetes Federation of over 12,000 people with type 2 diabetes reveals that two in three have cardiovascular risk factors, yet, one-fourth said they never discussed, or could not remember discussing, cardiovascular risk factors with their doctor.Speaking about it, health expert Ritika Samaddar said, "Diabetes currently affects over 425 million people worldwide, with more than 72.9 million cases of diabetes in India in 20171, with most having type 2 diabetes and at increased risk of cardiovascular disease and its complications."Here are a few tips for diabetics to follow for a better health:Maintain your weight and waist circumference: Calculate your BMI and maintain it between 23-25kg/m2. Also, abdominal obesity is one major causative factor for precipitating diabetes. A measure of more than 90cm (men) and 80cm (women) signals abdominal (central) obesity in Asians. A study of 50 Asian Indians with type 2 diabetes and elevated cholesterol levels ...
A new research conducted at The Picower Institute for Learning and Memory at MIT finds that the protein CPG2 is significantly less abundant in the brains of people with bipolar disorder (BD). The study further finds how specific mutations in the SYNE1 gene that encodes the protein undermine its expression and its function in neurons. The study, led by Elly Nedivi, professor in MIT's departments of Biology and Brain and Cognitive Sciences, and former postdoc Mette Rathje shows how a set of genetic differences in patients with BD can lead to specify physiological dysfunction for neural circuit connections or synapses in the brain.Speaking about the study, Nedivi said that the mechanistic detail and specificity of the findings provide new and potentially important information for developing novel treatment strategies and for improving diagnostics. The researcher said, "It's a rare situation where people have been able to link mutations genetically associated with increased risk of a mental
The US-based pharma major Pfizer Wednesday said it plans to shut down its manufacturing units in Chennai and Aurangabad in the current fiscal due to very significant long-term loss of product demand. The closure is expected to impact nearly 1,700 workers. Its Irungattukottai unit in Tamil Nadu currently employs approximately 1,000 workers and Maharashtra's Aurangabad site employs approximately 700. The exact timing of the exit of these sites is yet to be determined, the drug major said. The recommendation to exit both the sites are the result of significant loss of product demand making manufacturing at these sites unviable, the company said. The plants had been part of its acquisition of US-based Hospira in 2015. "Pfizer has conducted a thorough evaluation of the IKKT (Irungattukottai) and Aurangabad sites and concluded that due to the very significant long-term loss of product demand, manufacturing at these sites is not viable. As a result, both sites will immediately .

Using some types of dental floss may contribute to elevated levels of toxic chemicals in the body which can lead to numerous health problems, a study claims. PFAS are water- and grease-proof substances that have been linked with cancer, thyroid disease and fertility disorders, said researchers from the University of California, Berkeley School of Public Health in the US. The findings, published in the Journal of Exposure Science & Environmental Epidemiology (JESEE), provide new insight into how these chemicals end up in people's bodies and how consumers can limit their exposures by modifying their behaviour. PFAS are used in a range of consumer products, including fast food packaging, non-stick pans, waterproof clothing, and stain-resistant carpets. People can be exposed to the substances directly through the products they use and the food they eat. They can also be exposed through indoor air and dust and contaminated drinking water. Scientists are concerned about widespread ...

Applying Artificial Intelligence (AI) to a widely available, inexpensive test can help detect a heart condition that is a precursor to heart failure, according to a new study.
Stanford scientists have developed a biodegradable, battery-free sensor that can monitor the flow of blood through an artery, helping doctors assess the success of blood vessel surgery. The device does not need to be removed and can warn a patient's doctor if there is a blockage, researchers said. "Measurement of blood flow is critical in many medical specialties, so a wireless biodegradable sensor could impact multiple fields including vascular, transplant, reconstructive and cardiac surgery," said Paige Fox, assistant professor at Stanford University in the US. "As we attempt to care for patients throughout the Bay Area, Central Valley, California and beyond, this is a technology that will allow us to extend our care without requiring face-to-face visits or tests," said Fox. Monitoring the success of surgery on blood vessels is challenging as the first sign of trouble often comes too late. By that time, the patient often needs additional surgery that carries risks similar to the ...

A recent study has linked post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) with cardiovascular disease and cancer. The study appears in the Journal of Neuroscience Research. In the study of 84 individuals diagnosed with PTSD (39 victims of terrorist attacks and 45 victims of other traumatic events), males were more likely to have circulatory and metabolic complications, whereas females had a higher prevalence of benign and malignant cancers.A longer duration of PTSD was associated with the development of cardiovascular disease, while PTSD following terrorist attacks was associated with a higher cancer prevalence."An explanation of why victims of terrorism may have a higher cancer prevalence than victims of other traumatic events, such as accidents, may be the intentional infliction of harm on the victim causing a more dysregulated stress response. A challenge for the future is monitoring the physical health of victims over time and understanding psychological and neurobiological processes ...

Microbes stranded in the International Space Station (ISS) are not mutating into dangerous, antibiotic-resistant superbugs despite its seemingly harsh conditions, scientists have found. While the team from Northwestern University in the US found that the bacteria isolated from the ISS did contain different genes than their Earthling counterparts, those genes did not make the bacteria more detrimental to human health. The bacteria are instead simply responding, and perhaps evolving, to survive in a stressful environment. "There has been a lot of speculation about radiation, microgravity and the lack of ventilation and how that might affect living organisms, including bacteria," said Erica Hartmann, who led the study published in the journal mSystems. "These are stressful, harsh conditions. Does the environment select for superbugs because they have an advantage? The answer appears to be 'no'," Hartmann said. As the conversation about sending travellers to Mars gets more serious, there .
