Mothers have higher risk of heart disease, stroke

Though motherhood is the most divine feeling for every woman, women who have given birth have greater chance of developing heart disease and stroke than those who had never given birth, as per the findings of a new study, which appeared in the journal European Journal of Preventive Cardiology."The mechanisms underlying the associations we observed are complex. Pregnancy may lead to inflammation in the body, and the accumulation of fat around the abdomen, in the blood, and in the arteries. These changes could have permanent effects on the cardiovascular system, leading to a higher risk of heart and stroke later in life," says Dongming Wang, a researcher. The overall analysis has identified a significant association between ever giving birth and the risk of cardiovascular disease. Women who had given birth had 14 per cent higher chance of developing heart disease or stroke than those who had never given birth.During the study it was also found that each birth was associated with a 4 per .

Nutrients in blood linked to better brain connectivity, cognition in older adults

Higher levels of several key nutrients in the blood are linked to more efficient brain connectivity and performance on cognitive tests in older adults, a new study has found. The study was published in the journal 'NeuroImage'. The researchers looked at 32 key nutrients in the Mediterranean diet, which previous research has shown is associated with better brain function in aging. It included 116 healthy adults aged 65 to 75 years."We wanted to investigate whether diet and nutrition predict cognitive performance in healthy older adults," said study author Christopher Zwilling. The analysis linked specific patterns of a handful of nutrient biomarkers in the blood to better brain health and cognition. The nutrient patterns included omega-3 fatty acids, which are abundant in fish, walnuts and Brussels sprouts, omega-6 fatty acids, found in flaxseed, pumpkin seeds, pine nuts and pistachios, lycopene, a vivid red pigment in tomatoes, watermelon and a few other fruits and vegetables, alpha- ...

Can exposure to cannabis alter the genetic profile of sperms?

Exposure to cannabis can alter the genetic profile of sperms in men, and possibly affect the children too, a recent study suggests. As legal access to marijuana continues to expand across the U.S., more scientists are studying the effects of its active ingredient, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), in teens, adults and pregnant women.Experiments in rats and a study with 24 men found that THC appears to target genes in two major cellular pathways and alters DNA methylation, a process essential for normal development."What we have found is that the effects of cannabis use on males and their reproductive health are not completely null, in that there's something about cannabis use that affects the genetic profile in sperm," said Scott Kollins, senior author of the study. The study defined regular users as those who smoked marijuana at least weekly for the previous six months. Their sperm was compared to those who had not used marijuana in the past six months and not more than 10 times in their ...

Asbestos scare: CDSCO draws samples of J&J's baby powder from HP plant

The country's top drug regulator, the CDSCO, drew samples of Johnson and Johnson's baby powder from the company's Baddi plant in Himachal Pradesh on Wednesday amid reports that the product allegedly contained cancer-causing asbestos. This was part of a massive nationwide action against the American multinational pharmaceutical major to draw samples of their talcum powder. The company said they were "fully cooperating" with the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) by providing tests and samples, and asserted that the characterisation of these visits as 'raids or seizures is "incorrect". The CDSCO, under the Union Health Ministry, said over the next four to five days, drug inspectors will search manufacturing plants and wholesalers of J&J's talcum powder and collect samples of the powder for testing. The inspectors will check if the products complied with the cosmetics standards in India, officials said. "The action will take place at 12-15 locations across the ...
