Flexible biopatch can deliver precise drug dosage

Scientists have developed a flexible, transparent patch with nanoneedles that can deliver exact doses of drugs directly into cells and also monitor health markers. Silicon nanoneedles patches are currently placed between skin, muscles or tissues where they deliver exact doses of biomolecules. Commercially available silicon nanoneedles patches are usually constructed on a rigid and opaque silicon wafer. The rigidity can cause discomfort and cannot be left in the body very long. "These qualities are exactly opposite to the flexible, curved and soft surfaces of biological cells or tissues," said Chi Hwan Lee, an assistant professor in Purdue University in the US. "To tackle this problem, we developed a method that enables physical transfer of vertically ordered silicon nanoneedles from their original silicon wafer to a bio-patch," Lee said. "This nanoneedle patch is not only flexible but also transparent, and therefore can also allow simultaneous real-time observation of the interaction .

'Novel smartphone app can identify heart attacks'

Scientists have developed a smartphone app that can identify potentially fatal heart attacks with near accuracy of medical ECG, and may prove to be a valuable tool to save lives. The researchers from the Intermountain Medical Center Heart Institute in the US found that the app can monitor heart activity and determine if someone is having an ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI), a heart attack in which the artery is completely blocked. The app has nearly the same accuracy as a standard 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG), which is used to diagnose heart attacks, they said. Researchers say the findings are significant because the speed of treatment after a STEMI heart attack helps save lives. "The sooner you can get the artery open, the better the patient is going to do. We found this app may dramatically speed things up and save your life," said J Brent Muhlestein from the Intermountain Medical Center Heart Institute. In the study, 204 patients with chest pain received both a ...

What is more dangerous to heart, bacterial pneumonia or viral pneumonia?

A recent study has found bacterial pneumonia to be far more dangerous to the heart than viral pneumonia. The Intermountain Medical Center research was presented at the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions 2018.In the study of nearly 5,000 patients, researchers found that patients diagnosed with bacterial pneumonia had a 60 per cent greater risk of a heart attack, stroke, or death than patients who had been diagnosed with viral pneumonia."We've always known pneumonia was a risk factor for a major adverse cardiac event, like a heart attack, within the first 90 days of being diagnosed," said J. Brent Muhlestein. "What we didn't know was which type of pneumonia was more dangerous. The results of this study provided a clear answer, which will allow physicians to better monitor patients and focus on reducing their risk of a major adverse cardiac event."The study evaluated 4,792 patients diagnosed with pneumonia who were hospitalized at one of Intermountain Healthcare's 23 hospitals

'New cell phone-based tool to detect HIV'

Scientists have designed a portable and low-cost diagnostic tool, utilising a cell phone and nanotechnology, which can detect HIV and monitor its management in resource-limited regions. Management of human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV), a disorder that cripples the immune system by attacking healthy cells, remains a major global health challenge in developing countries that lack infrastructure and trained medical professionals. "Early detection of HIV is critical to prevent disease progression and transmission, and it requires long-term monitoring, which can be a burden for families that have to travel to reach a clinic or hospital," said Hadi Shafiee from Brigham and Women's Hospital in the US. "This rapid and low-cost cell phone system represents a new method for detecting acute infection, which would reduce the risk of virus transmission and could also be used to detect early treatment failure," Shafiee said. Traditional virus monitoring methods for HIV are expensive, requiring ...

Cancer genomics research should be more widespread: Varmus

Nobel laureate Harold E Varmus has said that research on cancer genomics needs to be more widespread as it provides a deeper understanding of the disease and helps save a large number of lives. Stressing on the need for gathering genomic data for patients of diverse ethnic and geographical backgrounds, Varmus said at present there is enough data for Caucasian white patients but data from other regions like India, Africa is critically required without delay. The medical scientist made the observations while delivering a lecture on 'The transformation of cancer research' at the National Institute of Biomedical Genomics here on Sunday. Genomics is the branch of molecular biology concerned with the structure, function, evolution and mapping of genomes. There is a need for a deep rational understanding of how cancer arises and genomics provides a deeper understanding of cancer, he said. He gave some examples of how genomic insights have provided more precise treatment of ...
