Taking a low-dose aspirin daily may help women lower their risk of developing ovarian cancer, according to a new study.Co-led by Moffitt Cancer Center, the study found that women who reported taking a low-dose aspirin every day had a 23 percent lower risk of ovarian cancer compared to no aspirin users. It was also found that women who were heavy users of no aspirin no steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen (Advil) or naproxen (Aleve), over a long period of time had a higher risk of developing ovarian cancer.Ovarian cancer is the most fatal gynecological cancer, largely due to lack of early detection strategies. It is believed that inflammation that occurs during ovulation plays a role in the development of this cancer. But anti-inflammatory medications, such as aspirin, have been shown to lower the risk of certain types of cancers. For this study, Shelley Tworoger, worked with researchers at Huntsman Cancer Institute and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public ...
Turns out, drinking a glass of wine daily for health reasons may not be so healthy after all.A new study from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis found that consuming one to two drinks four or more times per week increases the risk of premature death by 20 percent, compared with drinking three times a week or less.First author Sarah M. Hartz said, "It used to seem like having one or two drinks per day was no big deal, and there even have been some studies suggesting it can improve health. But now we know that even the lightest daily drinkers have an increased mortality risk."Although some earlier studies have linked light drinking to improvements in cardiovascular health, Hartz said the new study shows that those potential gains are outweighed by other risks. Her team evaluated heart disease risk and cancer risk and found that although in some cases, drinking alcohol may reduce risk of heart-related problems, daily drinking increased cancer risk and, as a result, ...

Turns out, early signs of type 2 diabetes are identified more than 20 years before diagnosis.A new research presented at this year's European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) Annual Meeting in Germany, found that increased fasting glucose, higher body mass index (BMI) and impaired insulin sensitivity were detectable up to 10 years before the diagnosis of diabetes as well as prediabetes.Lead author Dr. Hiroyuki Sagesaka said, "As the vast majority of people with type 2 diabetes go through the stage of prediabetes, our findings suggest that elevated metabolic markers for diabetes are detectable more than 20 years before its diagnosis."Sagesaka and colleagues assessed the trajectories of fasting blood glucose, BMI, and insulin sensitivity in individuals who developed diabetes and prediabetes separately. At the start of the study, 27,392 non-diabetic individuals had a fasting glucose and average blood glucose (HbA1c) measured and were followed until a diagnosis of type 2 ...

Faced with the only chance to save a child's life, doctors in South Africa have performed a medical first -- transplanting part of the liver from a HIV-positive mother to her HIV-negative child, it was announced Thursday. The doctors at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg revealed that, one year after the operation, the child may not have caught the virus from her new liver. The child had a terminal liver disease and would have died without the transplant. Medication given to the child "may have prevented the transmission of HIV. However, we will only know this conclusively over time," said Jean Botha, chief surgeon at the university. The team of doctors performed the world's first liver transplant from a mother living with HIV to her critically-ill HIV-negative child, who had been waiting 180 days for a donor. They said that the mother and child, who have not been identified, have fully recovered and are in good health. The mother, who was being successfully treated with .

Consuming processed meats such as bacon, ham, sausages, salami and beef jerky may increase the risk of developing breast cancer, researchers claim. Studies on red and processed meat consumption with breast cancer risk have generated inconsistent results, said researchers at Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health in the US. An analysis published in the international Journal of Cancer has now examined all published studies on the topic. Comparing the highest to the lowest category in the 15 studies included in the analysis, processed meat consumption was associated with a nine per cent higher breast cancer risk. "Previous works linked increased risk of some types of cancer to higher processed meat intake, and this recent meta-analysis suggests that processed meat consumption may also increase breast cancer risk," said Maryam Farvid from the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health. "Therefore, cutting down processed meat seems beneficial for the prevention of breast cancer," Farvid ...

Doctors in South Africa say they transplanted part of a liver from a mother with HIV to her critically ill but HIV-negative child, concluding that the chance to save a life outweighed the risk of virus transmission. The team from the Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre in Johannesburg says the mother and the child recovered after the 2017 transplant, though it is not yet known whether the child has the virus that causes AIDS. The University of the Witwatersrand experts explained the procedure in an article published Thursday in the journal AIDS. They say medication provided to the child before the transplant may have prevented HIV transmission, though that will only become clear over time. They say a liver from a donor without HIV was not available.
