'Electronic device implanted in brain could stop seizures'

A new electronic device implanted directly into the brain can detect, stop and even prevent epileptic seizures, scientists say. The researchers, including those from the University of Cambridge in the UK, implanted the device into the brains of mice. When the first signals of a seizure were detected, the device delivered a native brain chemical which stopped the seizure from progressing. The results, published in the journal Science Advances, could also be applied to other conditions including brain tumours and Parkinson's disease. The work represents another advance in the development of soft, flexible electronics that interface well with human tissue, researchers said. "These thin, organic films do minimal damage in the brain, and their electrical properties are well-suited for these types of applications," said George Malliaras, a professor at Cambridge's Department of Engineering. While there are many different types of seizures, in most patients with epilepsy, neurons in the ...

This electronic device could stop epileptic seizures

An electronic device implanted directly into the brain can detect, stop and even prevent epileptic seizures, as demonstrated by researchers. The researchers, from the University of Cambridge, the École Nationale Superieure des Mines and INSERM in France, implanted the device into the brains of mice, and when the first signals of a seizure were detected, delivered a native brain chemical which stopped the seizure from progressing. The work represents another advance in the development of soft, flexible electronics that interface well with human tissue.Professor George Malliaras who led the research said, "These thin, organic films do minimal damage in the brain, and their electrical properties are well-suited for these types of applications."While there are many different types of seizures, in most patients with epilepsy, neurons in the brain start firing and signal to neighbouring neurons to fire as well, in a snowball effect that can affect consciousness or motor control. Epilepsy is ..

Chemotherapy may lead to early menopause

Chemotherapy may cause acute amenorrhea leading to early menopause in women with lung cancer, according to a new study. The study is the first to comment on amenorrhea rates in women below 50. It concludes that women with lung cancer, who desire future fertility, should be educated about risks and options before starting treatment.Premenopausal women with lung cancer may want children and should consult their healthcare providers about options for embryo and oocyte cryopreservation, the gold standard for fertility preservation. The study included 182 premenopausal women (average age at diagnosis, 43 years). The Mayo Clinic Epidemiology and Genetics of Lung Cancer Research Program surveyed women between 1999 and 2016 at diagnosis and annually thereafter about their menstrual status. Types of lung cancer treatments were recorded, and frequencies of self-reported menopause at each survey were calculated. The results suggested that chemotherapy for patients with lung cancer increases the ...

Exposure to toxic metals linked to cardiovascular diseases

Exposure to environmental toxic metals such as arsenic, lead, copper, and mercury has become a major global health concern. The metals like arsenic, lead, copper and cadmium are linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and coronary heart disease.Arsenic and cadmium, for example, are known carcinogens, but there are increasing suggestions that exposure to toxic metals may be an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. To investigate further, an international research team, led by Rajiv Chowdhury at the University of Cambridge, reviewed and analysed the results of epidemiological studies that had looked at the association of arsenic, lead, copper, cadmium, and mercury with coronary heart disease, stroke and composite cardiovascular disease. They identified 37 separate studies published before December 2017 involving almost 350,000 participants. A total of 13,033 coronary heart disease, 4,205 stroke and 15,274 cardiovascular outcomes were reported across the ...

McCain's family touches casket; wife kisses it

The late Sen. John McCain's wife, Cindy, has walked up to the flag-draped casket holding her husband's body at the Arizona Capitol and patted it, then leaned over and kissed it. The rest of his children then filed past the casket and touched it today, including his sons in uniform and daughter Meghan McCain who was weeping. Gov. Doug Ducey and his wife bowed and McCain's former colleagues, Sen. Jeff Flake and former Sen. Jon Kyl, both touched the casket. Flake gave a prayer at the ceremony that preceded a public viewing for the 81-year-old Republican who died Saturday of an aggressive form of brain cancer. Arizona's governor says Sen. John McCain was one of the only politicians who could get people to set aside politics. Gov. Doug Ducey said at a private ceremony Wednesday at the state Capitol that imagining Arizona without McCain is like imagining the state without the Grand Canyon, two things it's known for. The governor called McCain one of Arizona's favourite adopted sons. Ducey ..

'Protein behind cancer spread identified'

Scientists, including one of Indian origin, have found that blocking a protein slows down cancer cell growth, an advance that may help develop a drug to treat the disease. A study, published in the journal Nature Communications, identified the protein called NUAK2, which is produced by cancer cells to boost their proliferation and whose presence in tumours is associated with poor disease prognosis. "We looked at bladder cancer and found that a subset of patients have high levels of NUAK2 protein in their tumours which also happened to be high-grade tumours," said Liliana Attisano, a professor at the University of Toronto in Canada. Mandeep Gill, a graduate student in Attisano's lab, first found NUAK2 while looking for a way to block the known cancer-promoting proteins called YAP and TAZ (YAP/TAZ). Highly active in many cancers, YAP/TAZ work by latching onto the DNA to switch on genes that promote cell proliferation. NUAK2 turned out to be one of the genes that was switched on by ...

Three chocolate bars every month may cut heart failure risk

Chocoholics, rejoice! Eating up to three bars of chocolates every month can lower the risk of heart failure, a study claims. However, indulging in such treats on a daily basis may increase the risk of heart failure by 17 per cent, according to researchers from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in the US. The research, presented at the European Society of Cardiology conference in Germany, looked at five studies involving more than 575,000 individuals. Scientists found those eating up to three bars monthly had a 13 per cent lower risk of heart failure compared to those who ate none, 'The Telegraph' reported. Natural compounds in cocoa called flavonoids boost blood vessel health and help reduce inflammation, researchers said. "I believe that chocolate is an important dietary source of flavonoids which are associated with reducing inflammation and increasing good cholesterol," said lead researcher Chayakrit Krittanawong, from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in the ...

Bacteria from poultry products may cause serious urinary tract infections

A strain of Escherichia coli bacteria -- that lurks in retail chicken and turkey products -- can be passed on to people, causing urinary tract infections and other serious conditions, a study has found. Many people think of urinary tract infections (UTIs) as a common and minor annoyance, but invasive UTIs that involve the kidneys or blood can be life-threatening. More than 80 per cent of UTIs are caused by E coli, but only a few strains are responsible for most of the serious infections. One type of E coli, called E coli ST131, is particularly adept at travelling from the bladder to the blood and kills thousands of people each year. It is unknown how most people pick up E coli ST131 infections. Previous studies suggested that retail meat was not a source, but new research suggests that these earlier studies may have been too narrowly focused. Scientists including those from the George Washington University in the US, showed that there are multiple strains of E coli ST131 and that one .
