Vitamin D supplements may help ease the painful symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), a study has found. IBS is a debilitating functional disorder of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Little is known about why and how the condition develops, although it is known that diet and stress can make symptoms worse. Scientists from the University of Sheffield in the UK reviewed and integrated all available research on vitamin D and IBS. The study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed a high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in IBS patients - regardless of their ethnicity. The team also assessed the possible benefits of vitamin D supplements on IBS symptoms. The findings suggest that supplements may help to ease symptoms which can include abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhoea and constipation. Vitamin D was shown to have the most benefit on quality of life in IBS. "The study provides an insight into the condition and, importantly, a new way to try to ..
Haryana Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki today approved an ordinance for adopting the Clinical Establishments (Registration and Regulation) Act in the state, Health minister Anil Vij said. Initially, it will cover private hospitals having more than 50 beds, he said. Vij said the Act is being implemented to ensure minimum standards of the facilities and services so that people in the state can get quality healthcare. He said notification for the same would soon be issued and after that, it would be applicable in the entire state. Earlier, 16 states in the country had adopted this Act, he said. "Clinical establishments with less than 50 beds were given exemption so that small hospitals do not face any trouble," he said. "After its implementation, any private hospital would not function arbitrarily and show negligence in treatment," he said. Inspite of this, if any complaint is received, stern action would be taken against such hospitals, he said.
A week ahead of the presentation of this year's Union Budget, it has come to notice that the healthcare sector is in dire need of a regulatory committee who will monitor the functioning of the sector in India. In the aftermath of the death of several children at a hospital in Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh) due to alleged negligence, many hospitals have been under the scanner for engaging in forgery of bills, misuse of funds, and other such fraudulent activities. The growing recognition of India's healthcare crisis, therefore, has led to urgency for increased public funding of healthcare, which, the industry believes, can be taken up in the Union Budget."Private healthcare manages much of the patient burden spilling from the public healthcare system. This has boosted many health insurance schemes. The fact, however, is that adequate and comprehensive coverage for a range of services and diseases remains elusive. Curative and invasive interventions, such as surgeries and in-patient care, are ..
The Tea Board has initiated the process of issuing identity cards with QR codes for the first time in the industry for small tea growers of Assam which had been their long-standing demand. The Tea Board has so far collected records of 88,000 small tea growers of Assam and provided nearly 75,000 ID cards to them. The ID cards with QR codes would be used for buying and selling of green leaf from the small tea growers by use of a mobile App, the Tea Board said in a statement here. Bought leaf factories (BLFs) would be able to buy from the small tea growers by use of the same App. In the process, the QR code with the ID card of individual growers would be used to capture the growers' details and the data so generated would be used to analyse the leaf details, the quantity and quality received by each factory, it said.
People with influenza may have a six-fold increased risk of experiencing a heart attack, particularly in the first seven days, according to a study which emphasises the importance of vaccination. Chances of a heart attack are increased six times during the first seven days after detection of laboratory-confirmed influenza infection, said researchers at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES) and Public Health Ontario (PHO) in Canada. "Our findings are important because an association between influenza and acute myocardial infarction reinforces the importance of vaccination," said Jeff Kwong, a scientist at ICES and PHO and lead author of the study. In the study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the researchers found a significant association between acute respiratory infections, particularly influenza, and acute myocardial infarction. The risk may be higher for older adults, patients with influenza B infections, and patients experiencing ...

An Indian-American doctor here has been arrested for allegedly trying to strangle a nurse with an elastic cord as he was upset with her for administering an injection into his patient at a "wrong time", police said. Venkatesh Sasthakonar, 44, through his attorney, has denied the allegation and said that the January 22 incident has been blown out of proportion. Sasthakonar, a weight loss surgeon at Nassau University Medical Center in New York, has been arrested and charged with felony strangulation and assault. The police alleged that he threatened the life of his 51- year-old nurse. According to the complaint, the surgeon "was upset that his nurse had administered injection to his patient at a wrong time". Sasthakonar then came up behind the nurse, took out an elastic cord from his sweatshirt and wrapped it around her neck, the criminal complaint alleged. This caused the nurse to gasp for air and caused substantial pain. "I could kill you for this," the surgeon threatened
Genetic molecules in dengue- causing mosquitoes may hold the key to halting the spread of the deadly fever, and other such diseases, an Indian-origin researcher has found. The study may lead to future breakthroughs in combating destructive tropical diseases like dengue fever, Zika virus and yellow fever. The researchers focused their efforts on a single species of mosquito, Aedes aegypti, a key player in the spread of such diseases in animals and humans around the world. "Given the widespread global distribution of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, we estimate over 40 per cent of the world's population is at risk from dengue," said Susanta K Behura, assistant research professor at University of Missouri in the US. "The research could be used to precisely modify the genetic material of mosquitoes, preventing them from spreading disease to humans," said Behura. Recent research has shown that fragments of transfer RNA (tRFs), small sections of RNA that can regulate gene ...
A new study infers effects of low carbohydrate intake on pregnant women. It states that women who are pregnant or are planning to be should avoid diet that reduce or eliminate carbohydrates.According to the new study conducted by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, low carbohydrate intake could increase the risk of having babies with neural tube birth defects. It found that women with low carbohydrate intake are 30 percent more likely to have babies with neural tube defects, such as spina bifida (malformations of the spine and spinal cord), and anencephaly (absence of major portions of the brain and skull), that can lead to lifelong disability and infant death, when compared with women who do not restrict their carbohydrate intake.A first to evaluate the relationship between low carbohydrate intake and having children with neural tube defects, the study was led by Tania Desrosiers, PhD, MPH, and research assistant professor of epidemiology at the UNC Gillings School of ...

Smoking just one cigarette a day carries nearly half the risk for developing coronary heart disease and stroke as puffing 20 cigarettes per day, warns a study published in the British Medical Journal. The findings have important consequences for many smokers and health professionals who believe that smoking only a few cigarettes carries little or no harm, researchers said. They argue that smokers should stop completely instead of cutting down to significantly reduce their risk of heart disease and stroke. Researchers led by Professor Allan Hackshaw from University College London (UCL) in the UK analysed the results of 141 studies and estimated the relative risks for smoking one, five, or 20 cigarettes per day. They found that men who smoked one cigarette per day had 46 per cent of the excess risk of heart disease and 41 per cent of the excess risk of stroke associated with smoking 20 cigarettes per day (much higher than the expected five per cent). For women, those who ..
