Blueberry vinegar may help fight dementia: study

Blueberry vinegar may help fight dementia, according to a study that shows fermented product restores cognitive function. Recent studies have shown that the brains of people with Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of dementia, have lower levels of the signalling compound acetylcholine and its receptors. The study, published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, has also demonstrated that blocking acetylcholine receptors disrupts learning and memory. Drugs to stop the breakdown of acetylcholine have been developed to fight dementia, but they often do not last long in the body and can be toxic to the liver. Natural extracts could be a safer treatment option, and some animal studies suggest that these extracts can improve cognition. Additionally, fermentation can boost the bioactivity of some natural products. So the researchers from the Konkuk University in South Korea wanted to test whether vinegar made from blueberries, which are packed with a wide ...

Personality trait shares genetic link with depression: study

People affected by depression may have genes associated with anxiety, worry and low mood, a study suggests. Scientists analysed the DNA of over 300,000 people and found many genes linked to neuroticism - characterised by feelings of anxiety, worry and guilt. The genes are also linked to depression. The findings help shed light on the causes of depression - which affects one in five people - and could provide information to help better diagnosis and treatment for individuals, said the researchers from the University of Edinburgh in the UK. They analysed genetic information from a group of people aged from 39 to 73, whose levels of neuroticism had been measured by a personality questionnaire. DNA analysis combined with the personality data uncovered 116 gene variations linked to neuroticism. The researchers found that genes associated with neuroticism had some overlap with genes linked to a susceptibility to depression and some other psychiatric conditions. More than half

'Repeated mild food poisoning may trigger chronic disease'

Small bacterial infections that may go unnoticed can start a chain of events that leads to chronic inflammation and potentially life-threatening colitis, a study has found. The study, published in the journal Science, revealed how your past history of minor bacterial infections could add up with age to cause a severe inflammatory disease. These new findings may also help identify the long- mysterious origins of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), according to researchers from the Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute (SBP) in the US. The study reflected multiple clues. First, it has become increasingly evident that the genetic makeup of an individual plays a limited role in the onset of common inflammatory diseases, including colitis and IBD. Twins show relatively small concordance for both individuals developing IBDs, for example. Such findings implicate unknown environmental factors in disease origins. Second, the researchers noted that studies from other ...
