Brain scans can detect the earliest signs of Parkinson's disease -- many years before patients show any symptoms -- according to a Lancet study published Thursday. The research challenges the traditional view of the disease and could potentially lead to screening tools for identifying people at greatest risk. Parkinson's disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder, after Alzheimer's disease. The disease is characterised by movement and cognitive problems but is known to become established in the brain a long time before patients are diagnosed. Studying the crucial early stages of the disease, when treatment could potentially slow its progress, is a huge challenge. Researchers from King's College London in the UK provide the first evidence of a central role for the brain chemical serotonin in the very earliest stages of Parkinson's. The results suggest changes to the serotonin system could act as a key early warning signal for the disease. "Parkinson's disease has ...

Gay rights groups said Thursday they had filed a complaint with the European Commission alleging discrimination by France over its ban on blood donations by gay men unless they abstain from sex for a year beforehand. The move came three years after France lifted a 30-year ban on gay and bisexual men donating blood, on condition they practise sexual abstinence for 12 months to guard against HIV transmission. "This rule, which is still in place, effectively excludes 93.8 percent of gay men from donating blood," said a joint statement by Stop Homophobie, Mousse, ELCS (Local officials against AIDS), SOS Homophobie and Familles LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender). The complaint was lodged Thursday with the commission in the hope that the policy will be formally recognised as illegally discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation. Until July 2016, gay and bisexual men had been completely barred from donating blood under a ban which went into force in 1983 shortly after the HIV ..

Scientists have created a tiny robotic capsule that can take images inside the colon, and could replace the invasive and often painful procedure of endoscopy to detect diseases like cancer. Known as a Sonopill, the device can be manoeuvred inside the colon to take micro-ultrasound images, which have the advantage of being better able to identify some types of cell change associated with cancer. The device could one day replace the need for patients to undergo an endoscopic examination, where a semi-rigid scope is passed into the bowel -- an invasive procedure that can be painful. The Sonopill is the culmination of a decade of research by an international consortium of engineers and scientists which developed a technique called intelligent magnetic manipulation. Based on the principle that magnets can attract and repel one another, a series of magnets on a robotic arm that passes over the patient interacts with a magnet inside the capsule, gently manoeuvring it through the colon, ...
Residents are getting their first chance to weigh in on changes to a California measure that would give state public health officials oversight of doctors who grant a high number of medical exemptions for vaccinations and schools with vaccination rates less than 95 per cent. The Assembly Health Committee's hearing is expected to draw hundreds of people against vaccines to the Capitol, as have prior hearings on the topic. Critics shouted "we will not comply" inside the Senate chambers last month as lawmakers voted on the measure. They will likely be countered once again by dozens of white-coated medical professionals and students voicing support for the bill. The hearing comes just days after Sen. Richard Pan, the bill's author, announced major changes to the legislation designed to win support from Gov. Gavin Newsom. The Democratic governor had expressed concern with requiring state health officials to sign off on every exemption, as the bill had initially required. Now, the public ...

The World Health Organization notified U.S. lawmakers Wednesday that it will discontinue two publications on prescribing opioid painkillers in response to allegations that the pharmaceutical industry influenced the reports. The pledge to remove the guidelines comes a month after U.S. Reps. Katherine Clark and Hal Rogers accused the WHO of being influenced by Purdue Pharma, the American manufacturer of the potent painkiller OxyContin. The lawmakers' report claimed the guidelines, crafted in part by organizations with financial ties to the company, downplay the risk of opioids despite the American epidemic that has killed more than 390,000 since 1999. WHO's reports are viewed around the world as best practices in public health policy, and the opioid prescribing documents have been in circulation for years. "That is a very dangerous situation," Clark said. "We do not want to see the opioid crisis in this country exported around the globe." The WHO, the health arm of the United Nations, ..

While there are several pieces of research that suggested a link between low levels of vitamin D in the blood and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, researchers have now discovered that consuming vitamin D supplements won't decrease the risk. The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association Cardiology, found that vitamin D supplements did not decrease the incidence of heart attacks, strokes or other major adverse cardiovascular events."We thought it would show some benefit. It didn't show even a small benefit. This was surprising," said one of the researchers, Mahmoud Barbarawi. His finding was consistent for both men and women and for patients of different ages. Many earlier studies have found an association of low levels of vitamin D in the blood and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, suggesting that vitamin D supplements might reduce that risk.Barbarawi led a team of researchers and reviewed data from 21 clinical trials, including more than ..
