Punjab Health Minister Balbir Singh on Thursday refuted claims by the private hospitals that the state government owed over Rs 600 crore for various treatments availed under the Ayushman Bharat Mukh Mantri Sehat Bima Yojna. He said the total pending amount for both public and private hospitals is Rs 364 crore. Singh said the breakup of pending payments shows that Rs 166.67 crore are owed to the public hospitals and Rs 197 crore to the private hospitals. The minister's reaction came a day after the private hospitals and nursing association (PHANA) claimed that the state government owed over Rs 600 crore and had also threatened to stop providing medical treatments under the Ayushman Bharat Mukh Mantri Sehat Bima Yojana. The Kerala government has granted an additional Rs 200 crore for Karunya Arogya Suraksha Padhathi (KASAP), its integrated health protection scheme that is estimated to have benefited 64 lakh people in the southern state. With this additional allocation, the total amount granted for the flagship scheme in the present financial year has gone up to Rs 800 crore, state Finance Minister K N Balagopal said in a statement. He said KASAP is a comprehensive scheme which ensures the healthcare of 42 lakh families in Kerala and the State Health Agency under the Health Department, is implementing the programme. The government could miss the earlier target of launching the new National Health Protection Scheme (NHPS) from April 1, meant ti give insurance cover up to Rs 1 Lakh for below poverty line (BPL) families.A senior health ministry official said, "We are in the process of inter-ministerial consultations. We might not be able to roll out the scheme from April 1 as planned earlier." The government had planned to end the Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY) once the new one got going. In the former, all BPL families were to health insurance up to Rs 30,000. The new scheme was to be implemented by states.
