Assam Assembly passes six education bills amid opposition walkout

The Assam Assembly on Saturday passed six bills related to the Education department amid a walkout by opposition members who alleged that ruling party legislators had entered the House after the Speaker ordered closure of all doors for voting on amendments moved by them. After over four hours of debate on four bills moved by Education Minister Ranoj Pegu, Congress, CPI(M) and Independent legislator Akhil Gogoi expressed dissatisfaction that not even a single amendment brought by them was accepted by the government. Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia of the Congress demanded voting on the amendments, supported by CPI(M) MLA Manoranjan Talukdar and the Independent member. As Speaker Biswajit Daimary began the process of passing the bills, Saikia said they will not be withdrawing the proposed amendments. Bill to form higher education regulator to be introduced in winter session

A bill to set up a higher education regulator, which will replace bodies such as the UGC, is listed for introduction in the winter session of Parliament, set to commence on December 1. According to a Lok Sabha bulletin, the proposed legislation has been christened the Higher Education Commission of India Bill. The Higher Education Commission of India (HECI), which was proposed in the new National Education Policy, looks to replace the University Grants Commission (UGC), the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE). While the UGC oversees non-technical higher education, the AICTE oversees technical education, and the NCTE is the regulatory body for teachers' education. The HECI is proposed to be set up as a single higher education regulator, but medical and law colleges will not be brought under its ambit. Kerala Higher Education Minister R Bindu on Tuesday defended the cabinet decision approving a draft bill for the establishment and management of private universities in the state, saying that it was a necessary move in accordance with the changing times. Bindu, speaking to reporters here, said that it was a decision which the state could no longer avoid and that it was necessary for the progress and improvement of higher education in Kerala. MSM to help 10,000 students for higher education across top varsities

Global education solutions provider MSM on Tuesday said it is targeting to facilitate over 10,000 Indian students who are looking to pursue higher education in different universities of the world. The company helps students to get admissions in more than 1,200 universities across the US, Canada, Australia and the UK. MSM Founder Sanjay Laul said that since 2012, they have facilitated more than 1.45 lakh students find the right universities of their choice. Overall in 2022, about 2,26,450 students went to study in Canada; over 1,90,000 in the US, over 1,30,000 to the UK and about 60,000 opted for Australia as their choice for higher education, he said. "We are targeting more than 10 thousand students from the Indian market this year," Laul said.
