Irish boxer pursues dream after freak dental mishap

Rose Ceire Smith means it when she says she is made of stronger stuff. A boxer is supposed to be in any case, more so when she is representing her national team in a World Championship. But what bookends the Irish's assertion, more than the upper cuts, the hooks and the jabs in the ring, is the manner in which she recalled a freak dental mishap, which ended in a surgery to remove an instrument that found its way into her gut. "The incident happened five years back and it had affected my boxing then, but it is over now and I have moved on. I am happy about that," a calm and composed Smith said after winning her 51kg first round bout against Gabriela Dimitrova of Bulgaria here. In October 2013, Smith had ended up swallowing a sharp dental instrument during a root canal treatment due to the negligence of the doctor. She sued the dentist and the Health Service Executive. The 25-year-old claimed she was told it would pass through her system but instead it lodged near her hip only ...

"I'm just tempted not to dignified it with a comment," he said after a pause, adding that the pair had spoken by phone and "it came up." "We had a good laugh," said Pence. "We've got a very strong relationship." "I've been honoured to serve as his vice president, I was honoured when he asked me to run with him." The New York Times said Trump has taken to asking several advisors whether the vice president is loyal -- which they say is usually a sign he has "grown irritated" with someone, according to the paper. Trump has not openly suggested dropping Pence from the ticket with the 2020 presidential election rapidly approaching, the New ...

Abe visits Darwin shrine to Japanese war dead

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Saturday visited a shrine in Darwin commemorating the deaths of 80 Japanese submariners in waters near the city in World War II. Abe arrived in Darwin on Friday for meetings with Australian counterpart Scott Morrison, becoming the first leader of Japan to visit the northern port city since it was bombed by Japanese forces in 1942. After laying a wreath with Morrison to remember the 240 people estimated to have died in the Darwin bombings, Abe on Saturday honoured servicemen from his own country killed in a lesser-known incident. Japanese submarine I-124 was sunk with depth charges deployed from an Australian ship, the Deloraine, after a battle on January 20, 1942. The sub had been one of four from Japan laying mines in the area to attack allied shipping along the northern coast of Australia. The I-124 sank with all 80 crew members on board, and remains on the seabed some 60 miles (90 kilometers) northwest of Darwin. The city was bombed by Japanese
