Authorities in Vietnam's capital Hanoi are urging residents to stop eating dog meat because it hurts the city's image and improper raising and slaughtering of the animals could also spread rabies. For many Vietnamese, dog meat is a delicacy that is thought to increase stamina. Hanoi Vice Mayor Nguyen Van Suu said in a message published Tuesday on the city's website that slaughtering and consuming dog and cat meat are disturbing to foreigners and "negatively impact the image of a civilized and modern capital". The birth of two panther cubs in Assam State Zoo here has given it the distinction of having the highest number of six panthers in a zoo in the country, an officer said Tuesday. The cubs were born on Saturday night to panther couple Meena and Mohan and both the cubs and the mother and doing fine, Zoo Divisional Forest Officer Tejas Mariswamy said. Mohan and Meena were rescued panthers raised in the zoo and the authorities paired them in April. Besides these four, Assam State Zoo has two more panthers and has the distinction of having the highest number of six panthers in a zoo in the country, he added.
Begum Kulsoom, the wife of Pakistan's jailed former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, died Tuesday in London after a prolonged illness, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz president Shehbaz Sharif said. Kulsoom, who was under treatment at London's Harley Street Clinic since June 2014, was placed on life support earlier Tuesday as her health deteriorated, Geo TV reported. The 68-year-old former first lady was diagnosed with lymphoma (throat) cancer in August 2017. She had married Sharif in April 1971.

The body of former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan has received a hero's welcome upon landing at Kotoka International Airport in Ghana's capital. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was with Annan's widow and family members Monday as uniformed soldiers brought Annan's coffin down from the aircraft amid solemn music played by a detachment of Ghana's armed forces.
