Thai king wrapping up coronation with public audience

Thousands of Thais gathered around Bangkok's Grand Palace on Monday in hopes of getting a glimpse of King Maha Vajiralongkorn as he wraps up three days of coronation ceremonies with appearances before the public and the diplomatic corps. Vajiralongkorn succeeded to the throne after the 2016 death of his father, King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who reigned for seven decades, but it wasn't until Saturday's formal coronation that he was established as full-fledged monarch with complete regal powers based on the Southeast Asian nation's traditions. People began lining up early Monday so they could be scanned by a metal detector and get close to the throne hall balcony where the king was later to appear. Maha woman burnt to death by kin, husband battles for life

A woman and her husband were set ablaze allegedly by her father and relatives in Maharashtra's Ahmednagar district as they were opposed to the couple's marriage, police said Monday. While the woman died of burn injuries at a Pune hospital on Sunday, the man is battling for life with over 40 per cent burns, an official said. Terming it an honour killing, Inspector Vijaykumar Botre of Parner tehsil here said Mangesh Chandrakant Ranasing (23) and his wife Rukmini Rama Bharathiya (23) were set ablaze as they married despite being from different castes. The incident happened on May 1 in Nighoj village, 60 kilometres from the district headquarters, he added. "Ranasingh, a construction worker and Rukmini got married in November last year against the wishes of her parents. On April 28, she came to Nighoj village to meet her parents. Senior Congress leader Sam Pitroda Sunday said party chief Rahul Gandhi was "very educated and intelligent" and that the country needed young leaders like him. He hit out at the BJP for personal attacks on opposition leaders, including Gandhi, who is often dubbed "pappu" on social media by the saffron party's supporters. Veteran CPI leader and former MP Duti Krushna Panda dies

Veteran CPI leader and former Lok Sabha member Duti Krushna Panda died at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar due to old age related problems on Sunday, family sources said. He was 97 and was survived by three sons and three daughters. He was admitted in the hospital for treatment due to his old age ailments some days back, the sources said. Panda was elected to Lok Sabha from Bhanjanagara Parliamentary Constituency (presently Aska) in 1971. He was also elected to the state assembly from Aska seat in 1990. He was actively associated with several trade unions and was the founder president of Odisha Anganwardi Workers' Association. Panda was state secretary and president of CPI and AITUC, respectively. He was also the president of Ganjam district sugar growers' association. Apart from politics, Panda had authored several books. Panda's mortal remains was brought to his residence at Aska for cremation. Several leaders paid tribute to him at the CPI office at Bhubaneswar.
