Former defence secretary Ajay Kumar appointed new chairman of UPSC

Former defence secretary Ajay Kumar was on Tuesday appointed chairman of the UPSC, according to a Union Personnel Ministry order. The post of Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) chairman fell vacant after the completion of Preeti Sudan's tenure on April 29. Kumar's appointment was cleared by President Droupadi Murmu, according to the order. A 1985-batch retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Kerala cadre, Kumar worked as defence secretary from August 23, 2019, to October 31, 2022, according to his service records. The UPSC -- which conducts civil services examinations to select officers for the IAS, Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and the Indian Police Service (IPS), among others -- is headed by a chairman and can have a maximum of 10 members. At present, there is a vacancy of two members in the commission. A UPSC chairman is appointed for a term of six years or until attaining 65 years of age.

Senior IPS officer Deven Bharti appointed Mumbai police commissioner

Senior IPS officer Deven Bharti has been appointed the new commissioner of Mumbai police, officials said on Wednesday. Bharti will take charge as the city's top cop later in the evening from incumbent Vivek Phansalkar, who is retiring after serving the force for 35 years. While the state home department issued an order about Bharti's appointment, it downgraded the post to the rank of Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), an official said. The post of Mumbai police commissioner is of ADGP rank, but it had been upgraded to DG rank in a few recent postings. A 1994-batch IPS officer, Bharti is currently the special commissioner of the Mumbai police.

UPSC further extends last date to apply for CSE prelims till Feb 21

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has extended the last date to apply for this year's civil services preliminary examination till February 21. This is the second extension in the deadline for applying to the examination, conducted annually by the UPSC in three stages -- preliminary, mains and interview -- to select officers of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and Indian Police Service (IPS), among others. UPSC's new registration module to streamline application process: Govt

A new module of registration and online application form replacing the Detailed Application Form (DAF)-I and DAF-II has been introduced by the UPSC in civil services examination-2025, Union Minister Jitendra Singh said on Thursday. The primary objective for implementing this module is to enhance convenience for the candidates, streamline the application process and optimise the examination cycle, he said. The civil services examination (CSE) is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) annually in accordance with the CSE rules notified by the Department of Personnel & Training, said Singh, the Minister of State for Personnel. The civil services examination is conducted annually by the UPSC in three stages --? preliminary, mains and interview --? to select officers of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and Indian Police Service (IPS), among others. In a statement, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) said the results were declared based on exams held from September 20 to 29. In major reshuffle, Rajasthan govt transfers 58 IPS, 20 IAS officers

In a major bureaucratic reshuffle, Rajasthan has transferred 58 IPS and 20 IAS officers. Puja Khedkar case: Ex-probationer sacked from IAS with immediate effect

The central government has discharged Puja Khedkar, former probationary civil servant, from the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) with immediate effect, official sources said on Saturday. Khedkar has been accused of cheating and wrongly availing Other Backward Classes (OBC) and disability quota benefits to ensure her selection in the service. She has denied all allegations. The central government, vide order dated September 6, 2024, discharged Khedkar from the Indian Administrative Service under Rule 12 of IAS (Probation) Rules, 1954, with immediate effect, the sources said. Delhi Lt Governor V K Saxena on Sunday directed the divisional commissioner to submit a report on the deaths of three civil service aspirants in the basement of a coaching centre in Old Rajinder Nagar due to a rain-induced flooding. UP's Shreya Yadav, Telangana's Tanya Soni and Navin Dalwin from Kerala died after the basement of the building housing the coaching centre -- Rau's IAS Study Circle -- got flooded after heavy rain in the central Delhi area on Saturday evening, officials said. CCPA issued 20 notices to IAS coaching institutes for misleading ads

Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has issued 20 notices to IAS coaching institutes across the country for misleading advertisements and imposed penalties on eight such institutes, said Ashwini Kumar Choubey, Union Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, in his written reply in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.The Minister said that the Department of Consumer Affairs is continuously working for consumer protection and empowerment of consumers through the enactment of progressive legislation. Senior IPS officer Tapan Kumar Deka was on Friday appointed Intelligence Bureau chief, replacing Arvind Kumar whose extended tenure ends on June 30. Deka, who has been handling the operations wing of the IB, takes over as the new chief for two years, according to an official order issued by the Personnel Ministry.
