IND front-runners in UAE conditions, but don't underestimate AUS: Jonassen

Five-time winner Jess Jonassen knows what it takes to lift the Women's T20 World Cup, and the veteran Australian spinner rated India as the front-runner at the upcoming edition of tournament to be played on spin-friendly, low and slow UAE pitches. The 31-year-old left-arm spinner played a key part Australia's title triumphs in 2012, 2014, 2018, 2020 and 2023, and feels with little knowledge of the conditions, it will be challenging for Australia to defend the title but it will be a mistake to underestimate her country. "India are well and truly the front-runner because of the depth and versatility that they have. They have better knowledge of UAE conditions. We have never played there, but Australia know how to play in big tournaments and can't be underestimated," Jonassen told a select group of journalists during the ABC International Development's five-day cricket commentary and mojo program at Australian High Commission here. "We have played in different sub-continent pitches and

Women's T20 WC: Harmanpreet and Co. 'tick all boxes' for preparation

The feeling of near misses has haunted Harmanpreet Kaur for long but the Indian captain feels that her team has ticked all the boxes in its bid to cross the line in the Women's T20 World Cup beginning in the UAE from October 3. Since the tournament's inception in 2009, India have managed to reach the final only once -- in 2020 when they lost to nemesis Australia. India have also played WODI World Cup final in 2017. Harmanpreet has been a part of both teams and led in the 2020 T20 World Cup. "This is the best team we are going forward with. The players have been playing together for a long time. For us we came so close last time and lost in semis (2023). "We have ticked all the boxes in terms of preparation compared to the small things were not there maybe in earlier editions," said Harmanpreet at the pre-departure press conference for the T20 World Cup beginning October 3. India have not had game time since end of July when they surprisingly finished runners-up to Sri Lanka in the

Indian players focusing on mental strength ahead of T20 WC: Harmanpreet

Indian players have been working on their mental strength for a "long time" which should help the team in overcoming hurdles, says skipper Harmanpreet Kaur ahead of the upcoming women's T20 World Cup next month. India, who finished as runner-up in the 2020 edition of the tournament, are placed in Group A along with six-time winners and defending champions Australia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and New Zealand. Kaur said on Monday that the Indian players have been working on the mental aspect to bring out their best in crucial moments. "We have been working on mental strength for a long time. The last 3-4 overs are the most crucial. T20 cricket is not a small format; at the end of the day, you are playing 40 overs," Kaur told Star Sports. "In the last 4-5 overs, the team that is mentally strong wins the match. We have been focusing on this for a while. If we can remain mentally stable in those final five overs, we can execute what's best for us." India's performances in summit clashes have

ICC deemed New York's undepictable pitch "satisfactory," gives six ratings

The ICC match referees have gone soft on the much-maligned pitches used for the New York leg of the T20 World Cup with six of the eight games, including the India versus Pakistan contest, getting a "satisfactory" rating. Only two games at the makeshift Nassau County Cricket Stadium, including India's opening fixture against Ireland, have got an "unsatisfactory" rating from the game's governing body which remains bullish on promoting cricket in the United States. The surface used for the game between between Sri Lanka and South Africa also got thumbs down from the match referee. After a rather long delay, the ICC published the pitch ratings on its website on Tuesday. The tournament, won by India, was played from June 1 to 29. All eight games in New York ended up being low-scoring affairs, drawing scathing criticism from experts and fans during and after the ICC event. 'Not feasible': ICC moves Women's T20 WC from strife-hit Bangladesh to UAE

The ICC on Tuesday moved the upcoming Women's T20 World Cup from Bangladesh to the UAE, saying it "wasn't feasible" to conduct the event there after governments of a number of participating countries advised against travelling to the unrest-hit nation. The event, which also features India and is scheduled to take place from October 3 to 20, will now be staged in Dubai and Sharjah with Bangladesh retaining the hosting rights, ensuring that it receives its share of revenue. "It is a shame not to be hosting the Women's T20 World Cup in Bangladesh as we know the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) would have staged a memorable event," ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice said in a statement which avoided any direct mention of the violence and tension in the South Asian nation. Allardice said the Bangladesh Cricket Board explored "all avenues to try and enable the event to be hosted" there. "...but travel advisories from the governments of a number of the participating teams meant that wasn't

Indian sports has made great progress in last decade: President Murmu

President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday commended the remarkable achievements of Indian athletes, particularly highlighting the nation's performance at the recent Olympic Games in Paris and Rohit Sharma-led cricket team's triumph in the T20 World Cup. In her address to the nation on the eve of Independence Day, President Murmu described these accomplishments as exemplary demonstrations of "dedication and hardwork." She noted that the past decade has seen significant advancements in sports in India, attributing this progress to the government's prioritisation of sports infrastructure development. "Our athletes have excelled on the global stage, and their recent achievements will inspire future generations," said President Murmu. India's impressive medal tally was six at the Paris Olympics, which included a silver and five bronze medals. Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra was the lone silver-winner, adding to his gold in the Tokyo Games making him a bonafide legend in Indian athletics. Pis

Golden Arms of Surya headline India's Super Over win, T20I series sweep

Skipper Suryakumar Yadav and Rinku Singh turned out to be 'men with golden arm' as Sri Lanka's saga of inexplicable collapses continued in a low-scoring thriller as India won the third T20I in Super Over to complete a 3-0 series whitewash, which didn't look possible in the 38 overs. Chasing a target of 138 on a rank turner, Sri Lanka were cruising along at 110 for 1 in 15.1 over before they once again lost their way -- third time in four days to be tied at 137 for 8. In the latest instance, the hosts lost seven wickets for 27 runs in a space of 4.5 overs. Having miraculously lost their way in the regulation game, the Indians were way more buoyed in the Super Over where Washington Sundar got both wickets giving away only two runs and then the captain fittingly completed the proceedings with a first ball sweep shot. No amount of credit is enough for the new Indian leader, who came into bowl in the 20th over with six runs to defend and got two wickets in his first two balls. This was

I don't want to be captain, I want to be the leader: Suryakumar Yadav

Suryakumar Yadav's heart is beating with joy watching his teammates care for each other, as he starts his journey to become a leader of men rather than a mere captain of a cricket team. In his first series as full-time T20I captain, Suryakumar won the 'Player of The Series' award after two brilliant knocks in the first two games, but getting two wickets with his off-breaks in a thrilling Super Over win was an icing on the cake. Like I said before the series, I don't want to be the captain, I want to be the leader, Suryakumar said at the post-match presentation ceremony. He couldn't stop praising his teammates, who showed a lot of heart in defending a modest 137. The amount of skill they have, self-confidence, it makes my job easy. The positivity, the care for each other is unbelievable. After the last game, I told few boys will be rested and they were ready to sit out. They have made my job easy. I have little pressure when I bat, he said. The Indian skipper said that just like o

ICC likely to discuss expenses of US leg of T20 WC during Colombo meeting

The United States-leg of the T20 World Cup is believed to have exceeded the budget and the all-powerful ICC Board will discuss the losses suffered when it meets during the Annual Conference of the world governing body in Colombo on July 19. Since the auditing isn't complete, it is difficult to quote a figure of losses as the amount received through gate receipts (ticketing) is yet to be fully computed. However, there is feeling among prominent board members that losses for the US-leg of the tournament could run into millions of dollars. It has been learnt that Tournament Director Chris Tetley has resigned but according to sources aware of the developments, the 49-year-old Englishman had decided to put in his papers even before the start of the tournament. "Many members aren't happy with Tetley's performance. He had tendered his resignation but it can't be said that USA leg of the T20 World Cup has got anything to do with it," an ICC board source told PTI on conditions of ...
