Afghanistan slay Pakistan by 8 wickets as Babar and Co stare at elimination

A spirited Afghanistan team continued its giant-killing spree to literally push Pakistan on the brink of elimination with a eight-wicket victory in a World Cup game on Monday. On a challenging Chepauk track, a target of 283 was certainly not the easiest of chases but Kolkata Knight Riders' Rahmanullah Gurbaz (65 off 53 balls) teed off in style while his partner Ibrahim Zadran (87 off 113 balls) dropped anchor at the other end in an opening stand of 130 which laid the perfect platform. While experience is worth its weight in gold in these kind of games, Afghanistan did well enough to chase down the target in 49 overs, exposing the frailties of Pakistan bowling unit which just didn't turn up on the day. Having lost seven ODIs against Pakistan, Afghanistan was missing out on that finishing touches which was required and all the four batters did play their parts to perfection in what was their highest run-chase in history of 50 over format. This is Afghanistan's second win after beatin

Cricket World Cup: You will see a new Pakistan team vs Afghanistan - Imam

Opener Imam-Ul-Haq on Sunday promised a "new" Pakistan team will take the field against Afghanistan following back to back defeats in the World Cup. The Men in Green started the tournament well before losing to arch-rivals India and Australia. "We have played four matches and we are 2-2. We are confident. We will accept that we did not play well in the last two matches," said Imam on the eve of the game against Afghanistan. "We will have to perform up to the mark. It matters a lot how you play on the given day. You can talk as much as you want. But it matters how you play on the day. We have talked about it. You will see a new team tomorrow in Chennai." The Pakistani spinners have been unable to make an impact in the competition so far, and Chepauk being a spin-friendly wicket could allow them to get back among the wickets. When asked if the preparations would largely be spin-focused considering Afghanistan have the likes of Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Zadran, he said: "I don't believe

World Cup: Shami's Secret- Preparing pitches in village, cross-country runs

Earning millions for a top Indian cricketer isn't a big deal but spending those millions to take one's game to the next level isn't everyone's cup of tea. But then Mohammed Shami wouldn't have been an exceptional cricketer had he not shown time and again why he is away from the grind. As he became the first Indian cricketer to pick two five-fors in World Cups, the process of success in white ball cricket started far from the city life at his Sahaspur Alinagar village in Uttar Pradesh where he has built a full-size cricket ground with multiple pitches. He built the ground to ensure that he doesn't have to travel to the city for access to top-class facilities. "There is nothing else in Shami's life apart from cricket. When he is not playing for India, he is always thinking about upgrading his skills. When he took a break during West Indies tour earlier this year, he had already started thinking about World Cup. "He regularly practised at the ground he has built here in the village w

Cricket World Cup 2023: Shami took his opportunity with both hands - Rohit

Mohammed Shami sizzled with a five-wicket haul in his first game of the World Cup and his captain Rohit Sharma was all praise of him for grabbing the opportunity with both hands in India's four-wicket win over New Zealand here on Sunday. After Shami (5/54) led the Indian bowling attack to bowl New Zealand out for 273, chasemaster Virat Kohli struck a magnificent 95 to help his side chase down the target with 12 balls to spare. "Shami took the opportunity with both hands. He's got class and so much experience and he used the conditions really well," Rohit said at the post-match presentation. "At one stage NZ put up a big partnership there. Dew came in as well. But we have to give credits to the bowlers in the back end. Good start to the tournament but job is half done." Rohit had nothing much to say on Kohli's masterful knock as the maestro has been doing it for the country time and again. "Nothing much to say about Virat. We've seen him do this for so many years. He backs himself

World Cup: Going to be incredibly difficult - Buttler on ENG's SFs hopes

England captain Jos Buttler on Saturday conceded the loss to South Africa by 229 runs their biggest in history of ODI cricket leaves the reigning champions in a desperate race to qualify for the semifinals of the ongoing World Cup. England were bundled out for an embarrassing 170 for nine with their number 11 not available to bat due to an injury, after South Africa posted a 400-run target here in the World Cup game. "A really tough defeat to take. Obviously, we were disappointed in Delhi (loss to the Afghanistan) and had a good few days and worked really hard and did a lot of things hoping to put it right today, but it did not work out, Buttler told the media here after England's biggest ODI loss ever. Buttler agreed that it will be very difficult from this point to qualify for the semi-finals. "It is going to be incredibly difficult. We have not left ourselves any margin from this point on. But we will keep the belief," he conceded. "It certainly leaves us in a tough position

World Cup 2023, NZ vs AFG preview: Afghan spinners in focus at Chepauk

Afghanistan's upset win over defending champions England has given the side a new stature and New Zealand would underestimate Hashmatullah Shahidi's side at their own peril when the two sides clash in their World Cup match here on Wednesday. While the Kiwis would look to keep their unbeaten run going in the tournament, Afghanistan, who shocked England by 69 runs, would be keen to create another big upset and put their campaign firmly on track in the showpiece event. New Zealand are going great guns in the tournament, having won all three matches so far and are currently placed second on the points table, trailing India on net run rate. On the other hand, Afghanistan had an inauspicious start to their campaign losing to Bangladesh and India before leaving Jos Buttler's England in a tizzy with a victory to be cherished for long in New Delhi on Sunday. New Zealand will again be led by wicketkeeper-batter Tom Latham after their charismatic skipper Kane Williamson suffered a fracture on
