Seven arrested for stealing valuables from passengers' bags at IGI Airport

Seven people were arrested for allegedly stealing valuables from passengers' bags at the IGI Airport in Delhi and recovered several items, including luxury watches, police said on Saturday. The accused have been identified as Manoj Kumar, Hari Darshan, Balwinder, Praveen Kumar, Sanjeev Kumar, Subodh and Satish Kumar Verma, they said. Gold jewellery, currency of five countries, two Apple AirPods, a pair of Ray-Ban sunglasses and two luxury watches -- a Rado and a De Grisogono -- were recovered from the accused. The case stems from a complaint registered at IGI Airport police station by Punjab native Paramjeet Kaur. Kaur said she arrived in Delhi from Melbourne on September 16 and was to take a connecting flight to Amritsar, a senior police officer said. Road travel to IGI Airport will be affected from September 8 to 10 in view of the G20 summit, Delhi Police said in an advisory on Friday and suggested people to use the metro's Airport Line for smooth and hustle-free movement. However, those who still want to travel to airport from different parts of the city and NCR areas by their own vehicles, special arrangements have been made for them, police said. According to the advisory, from 12 am on September 8 to 11.59 pm on September 10, road travel to the Indira Gandhi International Airport would be affected. In case passengers travelling to the airport opt to travel by road instead of the metro, they are advised to make travel plans with sufficient time in hand, the advisory said. A runway at the Delhi airport will be closed for resurfacing works for around three months from September 11. The Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), which handles around two lakh passengers daily, has four runways and three terminals. "RWY 10/28 of IGI Airport will be temporarily closed for resurfacing works for approximately 3 months from 11th September 2023 to 15th December 2023. "Along with the resurfacing works at RWY 10/28, rehabilitation of existing taxiways connecting RWY 10/28 and construction of few new taxiways connecting RWY 10/28 will also be undertaken," according to a communication issued by the Airports Authority of India (AAI). The communication also said the closure of RWY 10/28 requires a temporary revision in the operating procedures to ensure smooth, orderly and safe aircraft operations. Vistara flight at IGI delayed for 8 hours as bomb threat call found hoax

A Delhi-Pune Vistara airlines flight was delayed for around eight hours at the IGI Airport here after a bomb threat call which later turned out to be hoax, security sources and police said. The bomb threat assessment committee declared the call, received at 7:38 am, non-specific or hoax at 2:15 pm. The airline was issued a security clearance for using the aircraft after extensive security checks, the sources said. Flight UK971 was to depart at 8:30 am and finally left at 4.30 pm, according to police. The sources said more than 100 passengers and five cabin crew were on board the Airbus A320 aircraft. Vistara said, in a statement, that flight UK971 was delayed due to "mandatory security checks". A senior Delhi Police officer said a threat call received at the Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) control room in Gurugram was transferred to them through the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security has approved the Delhi Police's traffic plan for the G20 Summit that will entail reopening a carriageway at the arrival zone of IGI Airport Terminal 3 which was closed by the airport operator a few months ago. The closure of the third carriageway, the farthest away from the terminal-3 building, triggered a tug of war between Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) and the police, which said the airport operator's action was "against the rules". In view of the G20 Summit scheduled for September 9 and 10, the Delhi Police presented a traffic plan in a meeting with BCAS on Wednesday. The dual elevated Eastern Cross Taxiways and the fourth runway at the Delhi airport will be operational from July 13, that will enhance capacity amid growing air traffic, a senior official said on Friday. The Eastern Cross Taxiways (ECT), which is 2.1 kilometres long and can accommodate wide-body aircraft, will reduce the time spent on the tarmac by passengers after landing and before take-off of their flights. It will also help in reducing aircraft emissions and enhance efficiency. The Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), which is also the country's largest airport, currently has three operational runways and handles more than 1,500 aircraft movements every day. With the fourth runway, eventually, the airport will have enhanced capacity to handle more aircraft movements. Delhi airport's expansion will bump up passenger capacity to 100 mn: DIAL

Amid the government looking to establish the national capital as an international aviation hub, Delhi airport operator DIAL on Monday said the airport's terminals will be able to handle 100 million passengers per annum once expansion work gets completed this year. In FY23, the airport, which has three terminals now, handled around 65.33 million passengers, including 15.65 million international passengers. Air India on Monday deboarded an unruly passenger from its Delhi-London flight, which returned to the national capital, according to sources. The sources said flight AI 111, which had around 225 passengers, returned to the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) here as there was an unruly male passenger onboard.
