Japanese automaker Honda's profit rose 3.5 per cent in the October-December quarter from a year earlier on the back of solid demand in the US and Europe and a recovery in its home market, the company said on Thursday. Tokyo-based Honda Motor Corp's profit in the last quarter was 253.3 billion yen, or USD 1.7 billion. Quarterly sales jumped 21 per cent to 5.39 trillion yen (USD 36 billion). A favourable exchange rate helped amplify Honda's overseas profits in yen terms and is expected to continue through the rest of the fiscal year, which ends in March. The dollar has been trading at about 148 Japanese yen, up from about 140 yen last year. All the automakers have been hurt by shortages of computer chips and other parts, partly due to disruptions in manufacturing because of the coronavirus pandemic. The latest results show Honda has mostly but not yet fully recovered to pre-pandemic levels in some locations. Honda's motorcycle sales grew in recent months in Brazil and Europe, accord

Japan and Italy are valuable strategic partners that share values and principles such as freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law, Kishida said. Kishida also praised progress in their joint development of a new advanced fighter jet with Britain. The three countries in December signed an agreement to establish a joint organisation to develop a new advanced jet fighter for deployment in 2035. Meloni said that the ...

Japan's exports surged almost 10% in December from a year earlier, helped by a revival in trade with China and strong demand for vehicles, machinery and computer chips. Imports fell almost 7%, leaving a trade surprise of 62 billion yen ($410 million), according to preliminary customs data released Wednesday. A weak Japanese yen has helped export manufacturers like Toyota, Honda and Sony, though it increases costs of imports of key commodities like oil and gas needed to fuel the world's third-largest economy. A decline in oil prices helped reduce the burden of energy imports in December, which fell by 18% from a year earlier. A recovery in demand in China contributed to a 10% increase in exports, while imports from China were flat. Another boost came from a surge in tourist arrivals, which are counted as exports in trade statistics. The improvement late in the year means that overall net exports should have made a significant contribution to GDP growth in the fourth quarter," Gabr

The United States, South Korea and Japan conducted combined naval exercises involving an American aircraft carrier in their latest show of strength against nuclear-armed North Korea, South Korea's military said on Wednesday, as the three countries' senior diplomats were to meet in Seoul to discuss the deepening standoff with Pyongyang. The training in waters off South Korea's Jeju island came as North Korean leader Kim Jong Un continues a provocative run in weapons testing and threats that has raised regional tensions to their highest point in years. At Pyongyang's rubber-stamp parliament this week, Kim declared that North Korea would abandon its long-standing commitment to a peaceful unification with South Korea and ordered a rewriting of North's constitution to eliminate the idea of a shared statehood between the war-divided countries. His speech on Monday came a day after the North conducted its first ballistic test of 2024, which state-media described as a new solid-fuel ...
