The Tamil Nadu government has informed the Madras High Court that it will issue an order for the release of the amount due to retired employees of state transport undertakings. Action is being taken for the release of "a ways and means advance of Rs 175 crore" towards the settlement of statutory dues to the retired employees despite heavy financial crisis, Advocate General (AG) Vijay Narayan submitted. The state government, as on June 22, owed Rs 614.91 crore to more than 7,000 retired employees of its transport undertakings towards statutory dues such as provident fund, gratuity and other superannuation benefits. Similarly, it owed Rs 5,074.75 crore to its existing employees. The court had earlier criticised the government after the matter was brought to its notice by an 82-year-old retired employee through a post card. Over one lakh workers will receive training in 310 highway projects by June 2018 with another 2.5 lakh in other projects by 2019 under the government's ambitious Bharatmala scheme, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Friday.
Shri Gadkari announced that a further 1 lakh twelve thousand workmen will be provided training at 310 projects of MoRTH, NHAI and NHIDCL by June 2018, under six trades namely masonry, bar-bending, shuttering, scaffolding, painting and plumbing. Orders for this were allotted to nine skill training agencies on the occasion. The Minister also said that about 2.5 lakh workmen will be trained in other projects of the Ministry, NHAI and NHIDCL by 2019.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today sought the release of Rs 676.57 crore from the Centre to meet an immediate requirement of funds to pay workers under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). While an amount of Rs 2,290.19 crore was to be released to the state by December-end, the Centre had disbursed Rs 1,613.62 crore till date, Patnaik said in a letter to Union Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, pointing out that there was a shortfall of Rs 676.57 crore. The labour budget of the state under the MGNREGA Scheme (MGNREGS) for 2017-18 agreed to by the Union Rural Development Ministry (MoRD) is 900 lakh person days with a financial implication of Rs 2,798.37 crore, he said. Mahanadi Coalfields Limited today said it has elevated 715 workers engaged in underground mines to open casts mines in various skilled trades, a move to provide employees opportunities of growth and skill development. During the current year 875 workers have been redeployed as trainees in various skilled cadres for their gainful utilisation. Out of these 875 workers, 715 have been selected from underground mines in Talcher Coalfields for redeployment in opencast mines as trainees in various skilled functions, the company said in a release. Employee engagement is a key bottom-line issue, yet over one-third of workers in 17 of the world's most important economies are disengaged, finds out a study. According to the study, which covered 17 countries and 12,480 participants, Indian workers ranked well above global averages on all engagement metrics, scoring higher than all other countries. Moreover, Indian workers have also rated every workplace satisfaction metric significantly above global averages.
