Naveen announces Rs 2 lakh for each Odia labour killed in

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh to the family of each of the three Odia labourers who were killed in a blast at a granite quarry in Andhra Pradesh. Expressing grief over the death of the three Odia labourers, Patnaik said the Odisha government would bear the cost of treatment of the three injured labourers from the state. Sources in the state labour department said the bodies of three Odia labourers will reach Rambha in Ganjam district tonight from Kurnool. Of the 15 persons killed in the blast, so far three have been identified as from Odisha. The number of Odia labourers killed on Friday may increase after identification of all the bodies, labour department officials said. HC directs employers not to recover enhanced minimum wages from employees

The Delhi High Court directed the employers today not to recover from employees the revised wages after it quashed the AAP government's March 2017 order. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar issued the direction, saying an important implication of its August 4 judgement escaped their attention. "We are of the view that wages dispersed shall not be recoverable from employees to whom it has been paid," the bench said. In its August 4 verdict, the court had quashed the Delhi government's March 2017 order revising the minimum wages for all classes of workmen in scheduled employment, saying the hurried decision was taken without hearing the employers or employees who would be affected and was violative of the Constitution. Singapore's Mustafa Centre store being probed for employment offences

One of Singapore's most popular Indian-origin owned one-stop shopping complex, Mustafa Centre, is under investigation for alleged employment offences, according to media reports here. The Mustafa Centre, which is registered as the Mohamed Mustafa and Samsuddin Company, is a 24-hour retail hub selling 300,000 products in Singapore's Little India. The iconic store was established by India-born Mustaq Ahmed as a 900 square feet shop in Serangoon Road in 1973, and grew to a 40,000 square feet space in Serangoon Plaza in 1985. The retail giant is being investigated following several complaints against it recently, a spokesman of the Singapore's Ministry of Manpower (MOM) said in statement. Bring in job quota in private sector, PMK tells Centre

The Central government should come forward to implement reservation for employment in the private sector and a legislation should be enacted to facilitate it, the PMK said here today. In view of Union Minister Nitin Gadkari's remark that reservation will not guarantee employment in the public sector as jobs were shrinking, PMK chief S Ramadoss said "the central government should come forward to implement reservation in private companies." Demand to implement minimum wages for plantation workers in RS

A demand to implement minimum wages for plantation workers in tea gardens of Assam was made in the Rajya Sabha today. The issue was raised during the Zero Hour in the Upper House by Congress leader Santiuse Kujur who informed that 8 lakh plantation workers in the state are in a "pitiable" condition without basic amenities as their wages are vey low. References checks still in vogue for assessing new recruits: Survey

In the digital age, companies are increasingly adopting artificial intelligence to improve the recruitment process, but a significant percentage of HR managers still support the age-old practice of reference checks while hiring mid and senior level professionals, says a survey. 'Kaushal Rath' flagged off in MP to help generate employment

HC sets aside AAP govt order revising minimum wages

In a blow to the AAP government, the Delhi High Court today quashed its March 2017 notification revising minimum wages for all classes of workmen in all scheduled employment, saying the decision was ultra vires the Constitution. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar also quashed the Delhi government notification setting up a advisory panel on minimum wages, saying both decisions were taken in contravention of principles of natural justice and without sufficient material and were invalid. As per the notification, the minimum wages for unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled labour were fixed at Rs 13,500, Rs 14,698 and Rs 16,182, respectively. The decision by the court came on several pleas filed by various industrial units and companies who employ workers on minimum wages. The petitioner-employers, who had sought setting aside of the minimum wage order, had contended that the Delhi government had not heard them before coming out with the decision.

Centre committed to developing Leather sector: Union Minister

Union Minister Suresh Prabhu today underlined the Centre's commitment to the leather industry and cited the Rs 2600 crore package approved for the sector earlier. The Union Commerce and Industry and Civil Aviation Minister also assured state governments of help in setting up new leather clusters or providing additional facilities. "We are committed to develop this industry. And you should thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi. We approved a massive package of Rs 2600 crore," he said in an interactive session organised by the Council of Leather Exports (CLE) here. Over 1.25 lakh jobs offered at employment meets, MP govt says

The BJP government in Madhya Pradesh said more than 1.25 lakh job offer letters were issued at 'Rozgar Panchayat 2018' held across the state today, a claim dismissed by opposition Congress. Over 1.25 lakh persons got job offers in the private sector during these 'employment meets', said state Skill Development and Employment Generation Board chairman Hemant Deshmukh. The government also handed over cheques of amounts ranging from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 2 crore to around 60,000 persons for starting their own businesses during the meets, he said. The Delhi government has asked all principal secretaries and secretaries to furnish details of contractual employees hired by their respective departments directly and also outsourced staff engaged through contractors. The Labour department has written to the head of departments providing performa for furnishing information. Last month, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had directed officials to expedite several proposals, including regularisation of contractual employees. "The Labour department has asked HODs to provide details of contractual employees, including their name, designation and monthly wages. 2 Haryana transport dept staff dismissed over fake certificates

Two employees of the Haryana transport department have been dismissed from services after their educational certificates were allegedly found to be fake. Rakesh Gupta, the additional principal secretary to chief minister; and Bhupeshwar Dayal, the officer on special duty (OSD) to CM; directed the dismissal of these employees on behalf of Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar during a review meeting, an official release said. According to a complaint received on the public grievance portal, mechanic Vijay Pal and blacksmith Pradeep Kumar were working in the Karnal depot. The complainant alleged that the matriculation marksheets of these employees were fake, the release said. Instructions were given by the chief minister to check the Class X certificates of these two employees. The certificates were apparently found to be fake, following which the chief minister directed their dismissal, it added.
