US to propose hike in H-1B application fee: Labour Secretary

The US plans to hike the H-1B visa application fee to increase funding for the expansion of an apprentice programme, Labour Secretary Alexander Acosta has told American lawmakers, a move that would impose additional financial burden on Indian IT companies. Testifying before a Congressional committee on the annual budget of the Department of Labor for the fiscal year 2020 beginning October 1, 2019, he said that the Labour Department has also made changes to the H-1B application forms to ensure greater transparency and better protect American workers from employers seeking to misuse the programme. Acosta, however, did not give details of the proposed increase in the H-1B filing fee and the categories of applicants it would be enforced on. But given past experience, the Indian IT companies, which account for a large number of H-1B applications, are likely to face the additional financial burden because of this proposed increase in H-1B filing fees. Steps at Mantralaya "unused" since 2012 demolished

The Maharashtra government's PWD department has demolished the steps at Mantralaya that were mostly "unused" since 2012, citing a report from the fire brigade. The steps, constructed after the devastating fire at the state secretariat in 2012, were demolished Sunday. According to a Public Works Department (PWD) official, the fire brigade had recommended removal of these stares for smooth movement of its vehicles in case of a fire at the government's administrative headquarters in South Mumbai. Besides, no one was "using" these steps except on days of flag hoisting, the official said. The demolition, which began Saturday and concluded the next day, drew criticism from an employee union. Guj: shops, businesses can remain open 24X7 now

Shops and other businesses in Gujarat can remain open round the clock now with the Gujarat Shops and Establishments (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) Act, 2019 coming into force from May 1, the government said. The act, passed by the state Assembly in February, was notified on May 1, a government release said Saturday. With this, commercial establishments in municipal corporations limits, or those near national highways, railway stations, state transport depots, hospitals and petrol pumps will be allowed to operate 24 hours. The shops and commercial entities operating near state highways and within municipality limits can now operate between 6 am to 2 am. The act replaced the Gujarat Shops and Establishments Act of 1948, which prohibited shops and other businesses from operating between 12 am to 6 am. 2 hurt in clash between fmr workers, management of Modi cloth mill

The management and former workers of Modi cloth mill clashed with each other on Wednesday following reports that machines kept inside the manufacturing units were being sold secretly. The groups pelted stones at each other and shots were fired in the air. In the ensuing chaos, two former workers were injured and a part of the Meerut highway was blocked for hours. The mill was permanently shut down in 1994 rendering more than two thousand workers unemployed. Delhi govt to deduct casual leave of officials coming late to office

Cracking the whip on latecomers, the Delhi government's Labour department has warned against deduction of casual leave of its officials, besides initiation of disciplinary proceedings. In a circular, the department said 10 minutes of grace period is allowed for coming late or going early in special circumstances beyond one's control. "Though up to two such coming late/going early in a month can be condoned on valid grounds, each coming late or going early is liable to result in deduction of half-day CL and initiation of disciplinary proceedings for habitual latecomers...from the prescribed office hours," statement stated. SAIL introduces pension scheme current, former employees

State-run steel maker SAIL said Tuesday it has introduced a pension scheme for its current as well as former employees. In a statement, Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) said that "in line with the guidelines issued by the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE), and with the approval of the Ministry of Steel, it has introduced its pension scheme for the benefit of its eligible ex-employees and employees." Under the approved scheme, SAIL said, all executive employees who were on rolls of the company on or after January 1 2007, as well as non-executive employees on rolls on or after January 1, 2012, shall be covered in the scheme. The trust deed was signed by the trustees nominated by Workers' Unions, Officers' Associations and SAIL Management, thereby formalising the creation of SAIL Pension Trust, it said.
