NCLT issues notices to Malvinder, Godhvani; directs status quo over RHC Holdings

The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) Thursday issued notices to Malvinder Mohan Singh, ex-Religare chief Sunil Godhwani and others, and also directed to maintain status quo over the shareholdings and composition of RHC Holdings board after the plea of younger brother Shivinder Singh. The tribunal also allowed both parties Shivinder Singh and his wife Aditi Singh and other party Malvinder Singh to inspect documents and take photocopies of the records of RHC Holdings. A two-member bench headed by NCLT President Justice M M Kumar issued notices to Malvinder, Godhwani and others after Shivinder's petition over alleged "oppression and mismanagement" of RHC Holdings. "We allow both parties to access, examine records. They can also take photocopies in accordance with law," the tribunal said. The tribunal also directed Malvinder Singh and other respondents to file their replies within 10 days and sought rejoinder from Shivinder Singh in two weeks. Koregaon-Bhima violence: Rights activists to remain under house arrest till Sep 12, says SC

The Supreme Court on Thursday extended till September 12, the house arrest of five rights activists in connection with the violence in Koregaon-Bhima in Maharashtra. A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra took umbrage over the statements given by the Assistant Commissioner of Police of Pune on the matter, saying he was casting aspersions on the court. The bench, which also comprised Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, told the Maharashtra government to make its police officials "more responsible" on matters pending before the court. "You must ask your police officials to be more responsible. The matter is before us and we don't want to hear from police officials that the Supreme Court is wrong," the bench told ASG Tushar Mehta, who was appearing for Maharashtra government. Prosecutors demand 20 years in jail for ex-S.Korea president Lee

Prosecutors demanded 20 years in prison for former South Korean president Lee Myung-bak, the most recent of the country's ex-leaders to be embroiled in a criminal inquiry. The 76-year-old former CEO turned president -- who served from 2008 to 2013 -- faces multiple charges including bribery, abuse of power, embezzlement and tax evasion. Prosecutors in the Seoul court also called for him to pay a total of 26.1 billion won (USD 23 million) in fines and forfeits. Tollywood actor Payel Chakraborty was found dead in a hotel room here on Wednesday evening.According to local media reports, the actress had checked into the hotel in the city's Church Road area on Tuesday. SC decriminalises consensual gay sex

A five-judge Constitution bench of the Supreme Court Thursday unanimously decriminalised part of the 158-year-old colonial law under Section 377 of the IPC which criminalises consensual unnatural sex. A five-judge Constitution bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra termed the part of Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code which crimiminalises unnatural sex as irrational, indefensible and manifestly arbitrary. The bench, which also comprised Justices R F Nariman, A M Khanwilkar, D Y Chandrachud and Indu Malhotra, struck down Section 377 as being violative of right to equality. The top court, in four separate but concurring judgements, set aside its own verdict in the Suresh Kaushal case. Supreme Court decriminalises homosexuality

In a landmark judgement, after months of deliberations, the Supreme Court on Thursday struck down the Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) which criminalised homosexuality.A five-judge Constitution bench, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra and comprising Justices D Y Chandrachud, Rohinton Fali Nariman, A M Khanwilkar and Indu Malhotra, issued the verdict on a bunch of petitions filed to scrap the law. The bench had earlier reserved its verdict on July 17.Criminalising gay sex is irrational and indefensible, observed the CJI while delivering the verdict. The Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender community has same rights as any other citizen, the CJI added. Dabholkar murder: CBI takes custody of Lankesh murder accused

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken Amol Kale, the prime accused in journalist Gauri Lankesh murder case, in its custody in connection with its probe in rationalist Narendra Dabholkar's murder case, an official said Thursday. The CBI suspects that Kale is also the mastermind of Dabholkar's killing, he said. Kale, who was arrested in May this year by the Karnataka Police's Special Investigation Team (SIT) in connection with Lankesh's killing. will be produce before a court in Maharashtra's Pune district Thursday, he said. Woman killed for dowry in Muzaffarnagar; husband, father-in-law arrested

Barely five months into her marriage, a 21-year-old woman was allegedly strangled by her in-laws because her family could not meet their dowry demands, police said Thursday. Phugana police station SHO Deshraj Singh said that Amrin, who got married to Sameydeen of Jogiyakheda village in April, was facing harassment at the hands of her in-laws since her marriage. She was killed Wednesday evening, he said. The woman's family staged a protest over the incident and demanded strict action. The SHO said that the police registered a case against five people in connection with the case and arrested Sameydeen and his father. He said the body has been sent for postmortem.

Scheduled caste student thrashed in Muzaffarnagar college

A class 11 student from the scheduled caste community was allegedly thrashed by his college senior after an argument over some issue, leading to a protest by members of the community, police said Thursday. Circle Officer Ram Mohan Sharma said the incident happened Wednesday at an aided college at Bhokerhedi village under Bhopa police station in the district. Sharma said the victim's father filed a police complaint alleging that his son received head injuries during the incident and that casteist slurs were hurled at him. The CO said a case has been registered and the accused apprehended. The incident prompted a protest by scheduled caste members who demanded action against the accused. The police officer said that the protesting crowd was dispersed. Additional personnel have been deployed as a precautionary measure, he said. Autorickshaw driver held for killing sister's lover in Thane

A 23-year-old auto-rickshaw driver was arrested Thursday here in Maharashtra for allegedly killing a man who was in love with the former's sister, police said. The accused, Rahul Namdeo, had Sunday informed the Shivaji Nagar police in Ambernath that he saw a man lying injured near a temple in the town, Thane police spokesperson Sukhada Narkar said. On finding the man dead, the police had initially registered a case of accidental death. However, the police got suspicious about circumstances of the death of the man, identified as Babbu Bagdi (25), and launched a probe during which it came to light that Namdeo knew the deceased, Narkar said. Bagdi was apparently in love with the 21-year-old sister of Namdeo and the latter was against the relationship. The accused had even reprimanded Bagdi over it, she said. Man absconding for 14 years arrested

A 38-year-old man, who was absconding for 14 years, was arrested here, police said Wednesday. The man, identified as Laxmi Prasad, was arrested from his brother's residence in Delhi's Madanpur Khadar on charges of cheating and forgery, they said. During interrogation, the accused revealed that in February 1996 while working as an office boy in a bank at Nehru Place, he fraudulently prepared a forged letter of his employer regarding application to the assistant manager of the bank for issuing a new cheque book, said Chinmoy Biswal, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (southeast). The bank staff confirmed from the employer of the accused and it was learnt that no such request was made by the employer, he said. Subsequently, when the accused went to withdraw money from the bank he was arrested on charges of cheating and forgery, the DCP said. After a month, he was released on bail. Minor girl sexually assaulted in school

A three-and-a-half-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted in her school at north west Delhi's Mukherjee Nagar, police said Wednesday. The incident was reported by the victim's father on Tuesday, they said. A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act, police said. "We are investigating the matter from all angles. We are not ruling out the role of the school authority or any family member or neighbour," Aslam Khan, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northwest), said. The girl is now stable, the officer said.

HC dismisses contempt petition against judge

The Uttarakhand High Court dismissed Wednesday a contempt petition filed against Justice Lok Pal Singh of the court. Previously, the court had questioned the petitioner on the validity of the petition. Advocate C K Sharma had filed the contempt plea, claiming that during the proceedings of the court, the advocate was allegedly insulted by the judge. A division bench of Justice Rajiv Sharma and Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia asked the petitioner as to how such a petition is maintainable without the express sanction of the Advocate General. Since the sanction could not be established, the petitioner requested the court for some time to look into the constitutionality and validity of the matter. 23-yr-old man robbed, killed by friend

A 23-year-old man was robbed and killed allegedly by his friend and four other people, police said Wednesday. Based on a complaint lodged by Deepak's father on September 3, a case was registered. In the complaint, Ramshankar, the victim's father, claimed that his son had gone with Shivam (20) to deposit Rs 4.5 lakh in a private bank at Jasola in Sarita Vihar. On September 4, Shivam was detained for questioning from Madanpur Khadar. Initially, he denied having any knowledge about Deepak but later confessed about killing him along with his associates, the police said. FIR against Goa power minister's brother

Brother of Goa Power Minister Pandurang Madkaikar has been booked on charge of assaulting a local panchayat representative, the police said Wednesday. Panchayat member of Old Goa, Nilkant Bhomkar, has lodged an FIR against Dhaku Madkaikar, the younger brother of Madkaikar Tuesday evening, a police official said. Bhomkar claimed that when he was getting out of the panchayat hall after attending a meeting of tribal bodies, he was stopped by Madkaikar and his cousin Mahesh Pilgaonkar and was beaten up. "They were alleging that I had disrespected the minister during the meeting because of which they were upset with me," Bhomkar stated. In a cross complaint, Dhaku's wife stated that Bhomkar had threatened her and her husband. Old Goa police inspector Sudesh Velip said both the complaints are being investigated. 3 gang members nabbed in Delhi's Alipur after early-morning shootout

Three members of a gang were arrested following a shootout with police in outer Delhi's Alipur area Wednesday morning, police said. Manjit (23), Niteesh (20) and Mahesh (25) are members of the Tillu gang, they said. The accused were wanted in the case of murder of a person, named Arman, who was a member of the rival Gogi Gang. Arman was allegedly shot dead by the three men on August 20, police said. On September 4, a trap was laid near Qutub Garh bus stop where Manjit had come to meet his associates. Subsequently, he was arrested and a country-made pistol and two live cartridges were seized from his possession, said Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell). Three men arrested for illegally supplying psychotropic drug 'Tramadol', huge consignment seized

Three persons were arrested for allegedly procuring huge consignment of psychotropic drug 'Tramadol' worth Rs 37,50,000 and illegally supplying it in several parts of the country, police said Wednesday. The accused were identified as Babloo Kumar (28), Sri Chand (42) and Rakesh Mishra (38). 150 boxes containing 37,500 tablets of Tramadol also known as fighter drug, was recovered from their possession, Additional Commissioner (Crime) Rajiv Ranjan said.
