Malegaon case: Court defers framing of charges against Purohit, others

A trial court here Wednesday deferred framing of charges against Lt Col Prasad Shrikant Purohit and other accused persons in the 2008 Malegaon blast case. Special judge, National Investigation Agency (NIA) court, Vinod Padalkar deferred the framing of charges after Purohit and other accused raised objections on the validity of sanction for their prosecution under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). One of the accused, former Major Ramesh Upadhyay, argued that first it should be decided whether the UAPA is applicable on them, before the trial commences. The judge adjourned the matter and said the court will hear arguments of all the accused on this from next Monday. The arguments will be heard on a day-to-day basis, starting with Purohit, the judge said. The Bombay High Court had Tuesday rejected Purohit's plea to restrain the trial court from framing charges against him and other accused persons in the case. In his plea, Purohit had urged the high court to stay the framing .

Woman among 2 held for murder of Army man in JK's Poonch

Nearly four months after an army jawan was killed during a scuffle over a land dispute at a village here, the police arrested two persons, including a woman, in connection with the case. Police said Wednesday they arrested Mohammad Alyas and Zanib Bi from Mendhar yesterday. Army's Defence Service Corps (DSC) unit jawan Mohammad Matloob was critically injured during the scuffle at Chajjla village on May 5 and he succumbed to injuries at a hospital on May 19, they said. The Senior Superintendent of Police, Poonch, Rajiv Pandey, had constituted a special team under the supervision of assistant superintendent of police, Anwar-ul Haq, for effecting the arrest of the accused, who were absconding, a police spokesman said. He said the accused have been booked for murder.

Activists arrested for evidence on their link with Maoists, Maha police to SC

Five rights activists were not arrested for their dissenting views but due to the cogent evidence linking them with the banned CPI(Maoist), Maharashtra government claimed in the Supreme Court Wednesday. The apex court while ordering the house arrest of the five activists on August 29 till tomorrow had categorically said that "dissent is the safety valve of democracy". The counter affidavit, filed by the Maharashtra police on a plea of historian Romila Thapar and others challenging the arrest of these activists in connection with the Bhima-Koregaon violence case, alleged that they were planning to carry out violence in the country and ambush the security forces. The state police said there was sufficient evidence to "dispel" the claim that they were arrested for their dissenting views. It also questioned the locus of the petitioners, Thapar and economists Prabhat Patnaik and Devika Jain, sociologist Satish Deshpande and legal expert Maja Daruwala, and said they were "strangers" to the .

Teen killed by grandfather

A teenager was allegedly killed by his grandfather on suspicion of mobile theft in Bilgaon village in Bisanda area, the police said Wednesday. Dayasagar (15) was badly beaten up by his grandfather Ram Suresh Tuesday on suspicion of mobile theft due to which he died this morning, SHO, Bisanda, Arvind Kumar Singh said. An FIR was registered in this regard by the vicitm's mother after which the accused was arrested. The mobile was later recovered under the pillow of the accused.

3 gang members nabbed in Delhi's Alipur after early morning shootout with cops

Three members of a gang were arrested following a shootout with the police in outer Delhi's Alipur area Wednesday morning, the police said. The three nabbed -- Manjit (23), Nitish (21) and Mahesh (25) -- are members of the Tillu gang, they said. Manjit was wanted in the case of murder of a person, named Arman, who was a member the Gogi Gang, police said. Based on the information extracted from him, a trap was laid at the Budhpur road and at about 5.05 am, a white-colour scooter, coming from the GT Karnal Road, was flagged down, a senior officer said. He said that two gang members, who were riding the scooter, tried to escape and when the police chased them, they opened fire. Ex-IPS Sanjiv Bhatt detained in 22-yr-old case

Former IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt was detained Wednesday by the Gujarat CID in connection with a 22-year-old case of arrest of a man for alleged possession of drugs, a senior police official said. Bhatt and seven others, including some former policemen attached with the Banaskatha Police, were detained for questioning in the case, Director General of Police, Crime Investigation Department (CID), Ashish Bhatia said. Bhatt was the Banaskantha district superintendent of police in 1996. As per case details, the Banaskatha Police under Bhatt had arrested Sumersingh Rajpurohit, an advocate, in 1996 on charges of possessing around one kg of drugs. Woman marries against family wishes, abducted from hospital during age determination

The family members of a woman, who married against their wishes, allegedly abducted her after attacking a police van at a government hospital, where she was taken for age determination on court's order, police said Wednesday. Superintendent of Police (city) Omvir Singh said the woman was adducted by the family members Tuesday from the district hospital premises and taken away in vehicle. Chinese tycoon's arrest in US stemmed from rape accusation: WSJ

Tech billionaire and JD.com founder Richard Liu's arrest last week in the US stemmed from a rape accusation, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday night. Liu was released without being charged after his arrest on Friday and has returned to China. JD.com, the company which Liu founded in 1998, is an e-commerce juggernaut in China and the main competitor to industry leader Alibaba. The Journal said authorities in Minnesota are investigating a complaint against Liu by a female student from China. Liu, 45, was in that midwestern state as part of a residency for a Ph.D. program in business administration offered by the University of Minnesota. SC dismisses plea to ban book 'Meesha', says craftsmanship of writer deserves to be respected

The Supreme Court Wednesday dismissed a plea seeking to ban the book 'Meesha' for allegedly depicting Hindu women visiting temples in derogatory light, saying "craftsmanship of a writer deserves to be respected". A bench headed by Chief justice Dipak Misra said a book must not be read in a "fragmented manner" but as a whole. "Subjective perception about a book should not be allowed to enter legal arena with regard to censorship," the bench, also comprising Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud said. The bench also said that the writer should be allowed to play with words like a painter who plays with colour. The apex court's order came on a plea by Delhi resident N Radhakrishnan, who had sought to omit excerpts from the Malayalam novel 'Meesha' (moustache) written by S Hareesh.

Hardcore Hizbul activist arrested

A top over-ground worker of Hizbul Mujahideen, who was involved in encouraging youth to join the terror group and revive militancy in Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir, has been arrested, the police said Wednesday. Touseef Ahmad Gudna alias Abu Bakar was arrested on specific information Tuesday, a police spokesman said. The arrest of the hardcore motivator came just two months after police unearthed a module of the outfit planning to carry out grenade attacks and revive militancy in the district. CBI arrests NCB intelligence officer for demanding bribe

The Central Bureau of Investigation on Tuesday arrested an Intelligence Officer of Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in Kolkata for accepting a bribe of Rs. 50,000.The officer allegedly demanded Rs. 2 lakh as a bribe for not implicating the complainant in an NCB case. The accused, however, later agreed to accept Rs. 50,000.Following the complaint and necessary verification of the details, the CBI laid a trap and caught an advocate while accepting the bribe on behalf of the NCB officer. 8 booked under Gangsters Act in Gautam Buddh Nagar

The Gautam Buddh Nagar district administration Tuesday said it has invoked the stringent Gangsters Act against eight persons for their alleged involvement in crimes here. District Magistrate Brajesh Narayan Singh, based on a recommendation report by Senior Superintendent of Police Ajay Pal Sharma, pressed charges under the UP Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act, 1986, against these persons, an official statement said. Teenager held for raping girl he met on Facebook

A teenager was detained for allegedly raping a girl whom he befriended on Facebook, police said Tuesday. The 19-year-old girl had initially accused her tutor of raping her, they added. The girl had on Monday gone to attend coaching class but did not reach home till late night. When her family members inquired, she claimed that she was raped by her teacher, SP City Shlok Kumar said. When the teacher was questioned he told the police that the girl had not attended the classes. CCTV footage showed that she was roaming with a minor boy, he said. The minor was apprehended and he confessed to have raped the girl, Kumar said. The duo had become friends on Facebook, he added.

Bhima-Koregaon violence: Petition filed against ADG, Maharashtra Police

A petition has been filed in the Bombay High Court seeking action against Additional Director General (ADG) of Maharashtra Police, Param Bir Singh under contempt of court for disobeying the order of the magistrate and disclosing evidence related to the Bhima-Koregaon violence in media.According to the petition filed by social activist Sanjay Bhalerao, the police read out parts of letters, which were "crucial evidence" in the case, in a press conference before submitting it to the court in Pune.Bhalerao is being represented in the Bombay High Court by his lawyer Nitin Satpute.
