Two bike-borne men killed, one injured in road accident

Two bike-borne men died and one was injured after they were hit by a speeding car on Delhi-Meerut road here, police said today. The three men - Bodh Pal, Ram Kishan and Ajay pal - were returning home in Dabana villager after celebrating Eid when the accident occurred last night, they said. They were immediately rushed to a private hospital where Bodh Pal and Ram Kishan succumbed to their injuries, Deputy Superintendent of Police Dharmendra Chauhan said. The car driver and two other passengers were taken into custody and the car was seized.They were on their way to Haridwar from Delhi, Chauhan added.

Woman paraded naked: NHRC notice to Bihar govt, DGP told to ensure security of victim

The NHRC has sent a notice to the Bihar government days after a woman was assaulted and paraded naked by some people in Bihiya town of Bhojpur district in the state. The National Human Rights Commission has also directed the state's Director General of Police to ensure proper protection to the woman and her family members so that she is not threatened or subjected to any kind harassment by the miscreants. "The NHRC has taken suo motu cognisance of a media report that a woman was beaten and paraded naked by some people in Bihiya village of Bhojpur district in Bihar on suspicion of her involvement in a teenager's mysterious death," the national human rights panel said in a statement today. The Commission observed that the incidents appear to be a "serious case" of violation of human rights including right to life of the teenager and the right to dignity to the victim woman. Witness in Unnao Rape case dies, Rahul smells 'conspiracy'

One of the witnesses in the rape case of a minor girl in Unnao, in which BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar was allegedly involved, has died, prompting a terse remark from Congress President Rahul Gandhi, who said it smelled of a conspiracy. The CBI, which is probing the alleged rape case, said the safety and security of witnesses is a responsibility of the state police and it was not in the domain of the central agency. Panchkula CBI court rejects Ram Rahim's bail plea

The Panchkula Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court on Thursday rejected the bail plea of Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim.Ram Rahim was sentenced to 20 years jail-term in 2017, after being convicted for raping two women in 2002.The rape case was registered by the CBI in April 2002 against the self-styled godman.Earlier in February, Rahim was charge-sheeted by the CBI on the charges of castrating his male devotees, and was accused in a murder case in March.

Director of Noida-based builder's firm arrested over pending stamp duty

The director of a private builder's group here was arrested today by the revenue department after the firm allegedly failed to clear a stamp duty of Rs 12 lakh, officials said. Satinder Bhasin, of the Mist Avenue Private Limited, was arrested and the office of the group in Sector 143 seized, they said. The pending dues are in connection with an upcoming housing project of the group in Sector 143 D, Subdivisional Magistrate (SDM) Rajpal Singh said. "Bhasin has been arrested by a revenue department team. He is being taken to jail. If he can remit the money and get the dues cleared before being lodged in jail, he can be released. Otherwise, it will be a long procedure," the SDM told PTI tonight. DMK moves HC for registration of graft case against TN CM

The DMK today filed a petition in the Madras High Court seeking a direction to the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) to register a case against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami based on its complaint alleging abuse of power in allotment of highway projects. The petition filed by DMK's organising secretary RS Bharathi is likely to come up for hearing tomorrow. In his plea filed on behalf of the DMK, Bharathi alleged that the Chief Minister, who also holds the highways and road portfolios, had abused his power to allocate five highway laying and maintenance projects worth over Rs 3,500 crore to firms owned by his relatives and benamis. He claimed that most of the projects were funded by the World Bank. Political parties consider SCs/STs as vote bank: ex-Law minister to SC

Political parties consider scheduled castes and tribes as "vote banks" and granting quota in promotions to "IAS officers" or "District Judges" belonging to these communities violate the right to equality, former Law Minister Shanti Bhushan told the Supreme Court today. A five-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra was told by the senior advocate that granting quota in promotions for IAS officers and district judges would be in the "teeth of basic structure" of the Constitution. "Once you are a Class-I officer, you cease to belong from the backward class... Man arrested with heroin worth Rs 50 lakh

A 29-year-old man was arrested here with heroin worth Rs 50 lakh, police said today. The accused identified as Rashid Khan, a resident of Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh, used to procure the drug from Bareilly, they said. Based on a tip-off, on August 21, police laid a trap at a bus stand near Indira Gandhi Stadium between 10.15 am and 10.45 am where the accused had come to supply a huge consignment of heroin to his client. Subsequently, the accused was arrested and 500 grams of heroin was seized from his possession, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (crime) Bhisham Singh. During interrogation, Khan told police that around three years ago, he came in contact with one Pappu who lured him to supply heroin. To gain easy money, Khan joined him and started procuring the drug from Bareilly and supplied it to his clients based in Delhi and the national capital region, the officer said. Police is trying to trace Pappu and further investigation is underway, he said.

Fake birth certificate racket busted in Delhi

Three men have been arrested for allegedly preparing and selling fake birth certificates here, police said today. Further probe was underway to identify the source in the MCD that provided the accused with actual registration numbers and blank proformas to prepare the fake certificates, they added. The three accused, Rajeev Kumar, alias Raju, Anupan, alias Anu, and Karan, were arrested from the Tughlaqabad Extension/Sangam Vihar area in southeast Delhi on Monday, and 46 fake birth certificates and blank proformas were found in their possession, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rajiv Ranjan said. Police busted the racket after receiving a tip-off, he said, adding that the accused used to charge Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,000 for the fake certificates. The accused were arrested during a raid on a Tughlaqabad Extension shop, from where they used to operate, after they handed over a fake birth certificate to a decoy customer sent by the police, Ranjan said. UP: Minor girl found dead after gang rape

A minor girl who had alleged gang rape by three men inside a government school premise two days back in Budaun city, was found dead on Thursday.The victim's mother told ANI that her daughter had committed suicide by hanging herself at home. "My daughter hanged herself as she was ashamed. Also, she was threatened that her brothers would be harmed," she said.Meanwhile, Senior Superintendent of Police, Budaun, Ashok Kumar while addressing the media said, "Rape complaint was filed on August 21. Victim's medical examination was done. Investigation in the case is underway. Today, we got information that the girl has been found dead. Sheena Bora case: Indrani's lawyer accuses Mikhail of conspiracy

In the over six-year-old Sheena Bora murder case, her mother and key accused Indrani Mukerjea's lawyer today alleged her son Mikhail Bora was hatching a conspiracy to "cause disappearance" of his sister to get her share of ancestral property. Indrani is facing trial for allegedly killing Sheena Bora (24) on April 24, 2012. During Mikhail's cross examination before special CBI judge J C Jagdale, defence lawyer Sudip Pasbola alleged that between January and April 2012, Mikhail spoke to Shyamvar Rai, former dirver of Indrani, on phone more than 207 times. On April 16, 17, 18 of that year, they spoke for 34 times, the lawyer alleged. The advocate also suggested that Mikhail and Rai had entered into a conspiracy to "cause disappearance" of Sheena, as Mikhail wanted her share in ancestral property. MP: Couple dies in road mishap, son survives

A couple died today after a truck rammed into their motorcycle in Seoni district, the police said. Vihant, the three-year-old son of Dilip Navre (27) and his wife Sapna (25) escaped unhurt, a police official said. "The accident occurred when the truck hit the motorcycle of the Navres from behind and ran over them," said Kurai police station in-charge K S Baghel. The truck driver was arrested, he said. He said Navre's son Vihant survived miraculously. A police team reached the spot and sent the bodies for postmortem, Baghel said.

Delhi police facial recognition software has only 2 per cent accuracy: HC told

The accuracy of facial recognition software being used by police to trace missing persons is only two per cent and "not good", the Delhi High Court was informed today. The submission before a bench of justices S Muralidhar and Vinod Goel was made by the Delhi Police counsel, Rahul Mehra, after the court suggested use of facial recognition software to trace some of the women who went missing from an illegal placement agency here which was employing them as bonded labour. "The software is not good. There is only two per cent match," Mehra told the court which was hearing a habeas corpus plea moved by the brother of one of the missing women.
