The Delhi High Court today granted time to a BJP spokesperson to respond to a plea by a woman journalist, challenging summons issued to her by a trial court in a criminal defamation case filed by him. Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva also extended the exemption granted to the journalist from personally appearing before the trial court in the defamation case. Journalist Swati Chaturvedi was on May 17 summoned by the trial court as an accused in the defamation case and asked to appear before it in the proceedings initiated by BJP spokesperson Tajinder Singh Bagga for the scribe's tweets regarding his appointment to the post. Delhi police today handed over various documents to Congress leader Shashi Tharoor before a court here in a case against him regarding his wife Sunanda Pushkar's death almost four years ago in a luxury hotel here. The documents included statements of various witnesses recorded in the case. During the hearing, BJP leader Subramanian Swamy requested Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal that he be allowed to assist the police in the case, even though senior advocate Vikash Pahwa and advocate Gaurav Gupta, appearing for Tharoor told the court that Swamy had no locus in the case which was already being probed by the police. A Delhi court today sent two persons, who had allegedly attacked JNU student Umar Khalid at the Constitution Club here, to two-week's judicial custody. The incident took place on August 13 and the two were arrested from Haryana a week later. Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Deepak Sherawat sent the duo, Darwesh Shahpur and Naveen Dalal, to the judicial custody after they were produced before the court on expiry of their two-day police custody. The police told the court their custodial interrogation was not required. The two men, who were arrested on August 20 from Fatehabad in Haryana's Hisar district, had claimed that they were cow vigilantes and wanted to draw attention towards protection of the animal. The duo had told the police that they had planned to disrupt the event 'Khauff se Azaadi' (Freedom from Fear) that was being held at the Constitution Club on August 13. The AAP government today told the Delhi High Court that the Lieutenant Governor (LG) has approved the rules for regulating the standards for de-addiction centres in the national capital and they would be notified soon. The Delhi government also told a bench of justices S Muralidhar and Vinod Goel that once the rules are notified and publicised, then a mechanism will be laid down for such centres to apply for permission to function. Taking note of the submission by Delhi government standing counsel (criminal) Rahul Mehra, the court directed that the standards be notified and also uploaded online before September 19, the next date of hearing. The two men sentenced to death in the Mandsaur gang rape case were today shifted to Ujjain Central Jail, an official said. On August 21, Additional District and Sessions Judge at Mandsaur, Nisha Gupta, awarded the death sentence to Irfan Mewati alias Bhaiyu (20) and Asif Mewati (24), after convicting them of abducting and raping an eight-year-old girl. District Jail's top official Sunil Sharma said both convicts were shifted to Ujjain Central Jail, about 150 km from here, this morning. "There is a rule that the convicts who are awarded a sentence of 10 years or more or the death penalty must be lodged in a central jail," Sharma said. The customs officials arrested two foreign nationals at the Delhi airport for allegedly trying to smuggle 1.7 kg of cocaine, worth Rs 10 crore, into the country, authorities said today. According to a statement issued by the customs department, the arrested duo had swallowed about 145 capsules of cocaine, which were extracted at a city-based hospital. Hospital authorities took four days to extricate the narcotics from the systems of the foreign nationals. Two male passengers -- a Bolivian and a Kenyan -- were intercepted by the customs officials on Friday after their arrival from Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, the customs said. Detailed examination of their baggage did not lead to the recovery of any incriminating goods. Based on reasonable belief that there was concealment of contraband inside their bodies, the passengers were admitted to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, the statement issued by the customs said. A 26-year-old man was allegedly abducted from his house in northwest Delhi and his body was found in a forest in Haryana's Bahadurgarh area, police said today. Moti Lal, a resident of Singhalpur village near Shalimar Bagh was kidnapped on August 20 by Vikram and his two associates over a financial dispute, they said. In a complaint filed by the victim's wife, she alleged that the trio barged into their home and thrashed them before taking away her husband, Aslam Khan, Deputy Commissioner of Police (northwest) said. Udupi-based Shiroor mutt seer Laxmivara Teertha Swamiji died of liver cirrohosis and no trace of poison was found in his organs by the Forensic Science Laboratory, sources said here quoting the lab report which virtually ruled out foul play in the death of the controversial pontiff on July 19. Police said at Udupi that the report had been sent to Kasturba hospital at Manipal where the 55-year-old seer died. Doctors at the hospital had then said that they suspected poisoning might have cause the death. However, the team of doctors who conducted the post-mortem, in their report submitted to police on July 30, had not specified the actual cause of death, saying they would arrive at a conclusion after getting the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) report. A 15-year-old girl committed suicide here today after being allegedly gang-raped by three men, police said. The victim was reportedly abducted on August 20 by the accused and taken to a secluded building before being sexually assaulted, they said. She was found hanging from the ceiling of her house in Sainjini village under Musajhag police station early morning, they added. "Post-mortem examination will be performed by a panel of three doctors to ascertain if it is a case of suicide... We will look into the matter from all angles," SSP Ashok Kumar said. An unidentified man died of electrocution near here in Kapurthala district, police said today. Investigation Officer Balbir Singh said the deceased appeared to be around 30 to 35 years of age. He was found dead near a power transformer in the paddy fields of Narur village last night, said the officer. The body has been kept at a hospital for identification, he said.

A special court here sentenced a man to 20 years in jail for raping a three-year-old girl. In his order, special POCSO court judge Vivekanand Sharan Tripathi has written that the accused is a paedophile and may repeat the crime, in case of lesser punishment, Assistant District Government Council Virendra Kumar Lavania said. "Vishambhar was awarded rigorous punishment of 20 years with a fine of Rs 20,000," he said. The incident took place on December 5, 2015 while the girl was playing with her friends near her house. The accused took the girl to a secluded place and raped her, he said. After hearing her cries, the victim's mother rushed to the spot. However, the accused managed to run away, Lavania said. An FIR was registered against the accused under section 376 (rape) of the IPC and provisions of the POCSO Act. The judge has also ordered the state government to give a compensation of Rs 1 lakh to the victim, Lavania said.
