Man killed, four killed in artillery shell explosion

A 21-year-man was killed and four others, including a child, were injured when an artillery shell exploded at a village in Maharashtra's Nashik district, a police official said today. The man, identified as Ajay Shirsath, spotted the artillery shell lying near a firing range located close to his home at Belgaon Kurhe village in Igatpuri taluka yesterday. He took the shell and was trying to break its outer metal covering in the presence of other villagers when it exploded, killing him on the spot, the official said. Four others, including a one-and-a half-year-old boy, received serious injuries in the incident and they were admitted to the Nashik Civil Hospital, he said. A case of accidental death has been registered in connection with the incident, police said.

Muzaffarpur shelter home sex scandal: Patna HC pulls up CBI

The Patna High Court pulled up the CBI today for its failure to submit a progress report in the investigation into the Muzaffarpur shelter home sex scandal case and also sought to know from it as why a SP-rank officer, who was part of the probe team, was transferred. A division bench comprising Chief Justice Mukesh R Shah and Justice Ravi Ranjan directed the CBI to file its reply by the next date of hearing on August 27 and place it before the court in a sealed cover. In its previous order of August 6, the court had directed the SP, CBI, to appear before this court through a counsel and submit a report with regard to the progress of the investigation. The SP, J P Mishra, was shifted from the Special Crime Branch and attached to the office of the DIG at Patna vide an order passed by the CBI headquarters on August 21. Corporator who opposed resolution to pay tribute to Vajpayee

An AIMIM corporator, who had last week opposed a resolution to pay tribute to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, has been arrested and sent to jail for alleged bootlegging and some other charges, police said today. Sayyad Mateen Sayyad Rashid (32), the All-India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) corporator in Aurangabad, was sent to jail for a year on Tuesday under the Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities of Slumlords, Bootleggers, Drug-Offenders and Dangerous Persons (MPDA) Act, an official said. "During the general body meeting of AMC held on August 17, Mateen had opposed a resolution to pay tribute to former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Two die, one falls ill after consuming wild mushrooms

Two members of a tribal family died and one fell ill after consuming wild mushrooms in Odisha's Mayurbhanj district, police said today. The three had eaten mushroom for dinner last night at Kainphulia village. They complained of nausea, vomiting and stomach pain in the wee hours today, said Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), Betnoti, G C Sethi. They were taken to the Community Health Centre (CHC) at Betnoti where a woman and her brother-in-law (husband's younger brother) died, the SDPO said. The husband of the woman is undergoing treatment and his condition is stated to be serious, police said. The bodies were sent for post-mortem and a case of unnatural death was registered, the SDPO. The wild mushroom which the family had purchased from the local haat was suspected to be toxic, police said adding investigation is in progress. Man arrested for killing Sikh in US

A man has been arrested and charged with the murder a Sikh man who was found stabbed to death at his store in the US state of New Jersey last week. Terlok Singh, 55, was found dead by his cousin on August 16 in his store with an apparent stab wound in the chest. It was the third incident targeting the minority Sikh community in the country in three weeks. Roberto Ubiera, 55, of Newark has been arrested and charged with the murder of Singh, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert Laurino said. Ubiera did odd jobs at the store and a detention hearing is schedule for him later today. The Essex County Prosecutor's office had called the incident a homicide. 13-yr-old girl kidnapped, raped by 2 men in UP

A 13-year-old girl was allegedly kidnapped and raped multiple times by two men in Makrandpur village which comes under the jurisdiction of Khudaganj police station here, a police official said today. The Class 8 student was on her way to school on August 14 when Ajay and Kamlesh kidnapped her and later raped her multiple times, SP Rural Subhash Chandra Shakya said today. The girl somehow managed to escape on the night of August 21 and reached home, the SP said. Based on a complaint lodged by the victim's mother, an FIR was registered against the accused persons, Shakya said, adding that the girl was also sent for medical examination.

Nepalese man arrested with 28 grams of heroin

A Nepalese man was arrested for allegedly smuggling drugs and police seized 28 grams of heroin worth Rs 28 lakh from his possession in Sonauli area on the Indo-Nepal border here, a senior official said today. Devi Bahadur Adikari, who was on his way to Nepal from India, was arrested last evening during a routine security check, said Satish Singh, the in-charge of Sonauli police checkpost. Anaesthetist 'killed family with gas-filled yoga ball'

An anaesthetist gassed his wife and daughter to death using a yoga ball filled with carbon monoxide, a Hong Kong court has heard. Prosecutors told the High Court that Khaw Kim-sun left the inflatable ball in the boot of a car where the gas leaked out and killed them, according to reports from court yesterday. His wife and 16-year-old daughter were found on a roadside in a locked yellow Mini Cooper in 2015, in a case which initially baffled police. The pair were certified dead at the same hospital where Khaw worked and a post-mortem revealed they had died from inhaling carbon monoxide. Police found a deflated yoga ball in the back of the car. Khaw has pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder. Prosecutors said yesterday that Khaw, a 53-year-old Malaysian national, was having an affair with a student and his wife would not grant him a divorce. Man detained for creating nuisance commits suicide in police lockup

A man who was detained for creating nuisance after consuming alcohol reportedly hanged himself in a police lockup in Rajasthan's Bharatpur district today. Prahlad Singh, aged around 60 years, was caught by the police last night when he was creating nuisance under the influence of alcohol. He was put in the lockup at Kumher police station, a police official said. "Early today, he tore a blanket provided in lockups and made a strip out of that and hanged himself from one of the bars of the lockup gate," IG Bharatpur, Malini Srivastava told PTI. Shanghai man who killed wife, hid body in fridge gets death sentence

A man who killed his wife and stored her body in a fridge for three months was today sentenced to death by a Shanghai court. Zhu Xiaodong, 31, was convicted of strangling his wife Yang Liping to death in 2016 during an argument, a statement by an intermediate court said. He wrapped the corpse in a bed cover and hid it in a refrigerator on the balcony of their home, according to media reports. Over the next three months, Zhu then used his wife's money to fund travel as well as hotel trysts with other women, the court said. "He spent lavishly without restraint and showed no signs of remorse," it said. Zhu also used his wife's WeChat messaging account to impersonate her in communications with her friends and relatives. Man sentenced to 7 years in jail for kidnapping, raping teenager

A court here has awarded seven years of imprisonment to a 27-year-old man for kidnapping and raping a teenager, observing that a minor victim's consent "is no consent in the eyes of law". The victim, aged 16 at the time of the incident, went missing from her aunt's house at Belapur in Navi Mumbai, where she was residing since childhood, after she stepped out to go to a public toilet on June 18, 2016, the prosecution said. Unable to trace the girl, her family members lodged a complaint of kidnapping the next day. The prosecution said when the victim went out of her house, the accused, Rohit Ramesh Kadam, a casual labourer, kidnapped her and took her to Alibaug in the neighbouring Raigad district, where he raped her at a room in a lodge. He later took the victim to Pune and Karnataka and both returned to Navi Mumbai on June 25. The police recorded the victim's statement on June 26, 2016 and referred her to a hospital for medical examination. The man was subsequently arrested and booked .

An FIR was registered against a gram pradhan and seven others in connection with the death of a person during clashes between two groups here, police said today. An argument broke out between Tejbir Singh and Mangeram in Khatoli police station area last week, Circle Officer Rajiv Kumar Singh said. The two sides later came to blows, he said. Gorakhpur: 5 injured in firing near Commissioner house
