Jail inmate commits suicide in Ambala

An undertrial prisoner lodged in Ambala Central Jail here allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself with a rope made from a piece of cloth from the window of toilet of jail today, police said. The deceased was identified as Praveen (36), a resident of Baldev Nagar area, Ambala City, police said. Praveen was in judicial custody on charge of a criminal offence registered against him recently, police said. A jail inmate spotted that Praveen was hanging with a window of the toilet, police said. Praveen was taken to the civil hospital where he was declared brought dead, police said, adding that the body would be handed over to his relatives after the post mortem. The cause behind the incident could not be ascertained so far, police said. However, on the complaint of jail authorities a case was registered in Baldev Nagar Police station in the regard, police said. The matter is being investigated, SHO, Baldev Nagar police station Rajneesh Yadav said.

Divorced woman raped in Moga

A divorced woman was allegedly raped by a man here after having been allured to be taken abroad after marriage with him, the police said today. The police lodged an FIR against Hardyal Singh (47), a resident of Mullanpur in Ludhiana district for allegedly raping the 43-year-old woman. The victim alleged in her complaint to the police yesterday that she was married in 1990 with one Harjit Singh, but they got divorced around six years ago. She alleged the accused came in her contact some time back and tricked her into believing that he would marry her and take her to Canada with himself. And he began raping her on this pretext, she added. The woman told the police that the man came to her house on Wednesday when she was alone and forcibly raped her.

JKCSCC for united defence against legal challenge to Article 35-A

A civil society formation here today called for a joint strategy and putting up a united defense in the Supreme Court against the legal challenge to Article 35-A of the constitution, which gives special rights and privileges to the people of Jammu and Kashmir. The Jammu and Kashmir Civil Society Coordination Committee (JKCSCC) said those who have moved the intervener applications in the apex court in the matter should devise a joint strategy to fight the case. "Time has come to go to the Supreme Court with a unified action plan. There is a huge responsibility on our shoulders as interveners. We have to rise to the occasion irrespective of the affiliations on the basis of politics, region or religion to defend Article 35-A," member of the JKCSCC Muzaffar Shah told reporters here. He said the group has written letters to the interveners -- the Jammu and Kashmir High Court Bar Association, National Conference, M Y Tarigami of CPI(M), Tariq Hamid Qarra and others -- for meetings to chalk .

Man who stole plane said he was a 'broken guy'

An airline mechanic who stole a Horizon Air plane from a Seattle airport told air traffic controllers that he was a "broken guy" but also joked about whether the airline would hire him as a pilot if he landed safely. The man, who was addressed as "Rich" in audio recordings with air traffic controllers, said he didn't want to land at a nearby military base. He told them, "Those guys will rough me up if I try and land there." During another part of the exchange, the man said he was concerned he was going to run low on fuel. Later, he said he's "got a lot of people that care about me." He said he didn't want to disappoint them but that he was "just a broken guy, got a dew screws loose, I guess." Policeman in Punjab arrested for accepting bribe

A policeman at Sadar police station in Tarn Taran district's Patti was arrested today for accepting a bribe in a drug case, police said. Vigilance bureau sleuths arrested Head Constable Balwinder Singh red-handed while accepting Rs 50,000 as bribe, they said. Palwinder Singh, a resident of Teacher colony in Faridkot had complained to the vigilance bureau that the head constable had demanded Rs one lakh bribe to help his brother in a drug peddling case, and the deal was struck at Rs 50,000. After verifying the complaint, a trap was laid and the head constable was arrested on while accepting the bribe from the complainant in presence of two official witnesses, police said. A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against the accused at vigilance bureau police station in Amritsar and further investigation was underway, they said.

Afghan man held for smuggling gold at Delhi airport

An Afghan man has been arrested by customs officials at Delhi airport for allegedly trying to smuggle into the country gold worth about Rs 22 lakh. The accused, aged 26, was intercepted on his arrival from Kandahar (Afghanistan) on Thursday, according to a statement issued by the customs today. A detailed personal search of the passenger resulted in recovery of three gold chains, total weighing 737 grams, it said. The gold chains, valued at Rs 21.87 lakh, has been seized and the passenger arrested, the statement said.

Man held for creating fake Facebook profile of Patanjali's Acharya Balkrishna

A man, who allegedly created a fake Facebook account of Acharya Balkrishna of the Patanjali Group and engaged in "vulgar conversations" with the people, was arrested here today, police said. Mohammad Zishan, in his 30s, of Chilkana in Saharanpur, was arrested in the morning from a car showroom in Sector 10 where he had come for some work, they said. A complaint in this regard was made on August 4 at the Sector 20 police station here by Pramod Joshi, the chief executive officer of the Vedic Broadcasting Limited. Balkrishna, the managing director of the Patanjali Ayurved, is also the director and promotor of the Vedic Broadcasting Limited. "The unidentified accused has created a fake Facebook profile of Balkrishna and was chatting with his followers in an indecent and vulgar manner which was damaging his reputation," Joshi wrote in his complaint to the police. Temple priest arrested for allegedly molesting a woman

A 77-year-old man, a temple priest, was arrested today for allegedly molesting a woman in Kalyan area in the district, police said. Gopal Tambe, the accused, was booked under section 354 of IPC (molestation), said assistant police inspector S S Rajput of Kolsewadi police station. According to the complainant, a 28-year-old married woman, her neighbours advised her to consult Tambe for her headache. When she and her husband went to the temple to meet him yesterday afternoon, Tambe allegedly sent the husband away to buy some fruit as an offering for the deity and molested the woman, she alleged. 2 arrested for exploding crude bomb outside teenager's home

A 20-year-old man, along with his friend, was arrested for allegedly exploding a crude bomb outside the house of a teenage girl with whom the accused claimed to be in a relationship earlier, police said today. The incident happened in the early hours of August 8 in Dhayari area of Sinhgad in Maharashtra's Pune district, an official informed. The crude bomb, made by packing gunpowder and ball bearings with a sealant in a small box, shattered the window panes of nearby houses and spread panic in the area, police said. A Sinhgad police station official identified the accused as Kishor Modak and his friend Akshay Somwanshi (24). 16 questioned for links to men arrested with explosives in Maha

The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad has questioned at least 16 people for their possible links to the three men arrested for allegedly planning to carry out blasts in the state, a police official said today. The ATS yesterday arrested Vaibhav Raut, Sharad Kalaskar from Nallasopara near Mumbai and Sudhanva Gondhalekar from Pune. Following raids at Raut's residence and shop, the ATS claimed to have seized a huge quantity of explosives, including 20 crude bombs and bomb circuit drawings. ATS chief Atulchandra Kulkarni said they will probe if the arrested men had any connection with the killings of rationalists Narendra Dabholkar and Govind Pansare and journalist Gauri Lankesh. The ATS also questioned at least 16 others from Nallasopara, Pune, Satara, Solapur and elsewhere in the state for suspected links to the three men, the police official said. Muzzafarpur case: RJD warns Nitish of mass protest

Man arrested for raping minor niece in MP's Sidhi district

A minor girl was allegedly raped by her uncle in Madhya Pradesh's Sidhi district when her mother had gone to visit a temple, police said today. The incident happened yesterday in a village under Churhat police station limits and the accused had been arrested, an official informed. The 11-year-old girl's mother had gone to visit a temple and had asked her brother, who was at home at the time, to take care of the minor, additional superintendent of police Suryakant Mishra told PTI today. "The accused raped the minor and she narrated her ordeal when her mother returned home late yesterday evening. The accused had left for his home by then," he said. The victim's parents lodged a police complaint after which the man was arrested and charged for rape under sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the official informed.

18 held in Amethi under 'All Out' campaign

Eighteen people involved in various crimes have been arrested under the Amethi police's 'All Out' campaign, an official said today. A team led by station house officers (SHOs) of nine police stations held 18 people involved in murder and dowry cases last night, Additional Superintendent of Police B C Dubey told reporters. He said such operations would continue to curb the criminal activities. In another case, Dubey said, a police team led by Dipendra Singh, SHO, Piparpur arrested two persons reportedly involved in preparation and supply ofadulterated liquor. The police also seized 21 packets (each containing 945 bottles) and other paraphernalia used for preparing illegal liquor, from the accused, the officer said. A cash award of Rs 5,000 was given to the team by SP Anurag Ary, Dubey added.

Two teenaged girls found dead in Balasore district

Two teenaged girls were found dead at a house in Odisha's Balasore district but the cause of their death is yet to be known, police said today. The girls, both friends, were identified as Priyanka Das of Biripada village and Laxmipriya Das of nearby Tentei under the jurisdiction of Soro police station. Both were Class 10 students in a nearby high school, they said. Priyanka had gone to Lacmipriy's house yesterday to study together for a school examination. Both the girls were in a motionless state when Laxmipriya's mother entered the room late last night after which the family members raised an alarm and took them to hospital where they were declared "brought dead". Inspector In-Charge of Soro police station, Khyama Sagar Panda said a police team was sent to the hospital and the bodies have been sent for post-mortem. An investigation is on, he said.

220 kg ganja seized, 3 Maharashtra men held

In a major haul, ganja weighing 220 kg was seized and three men hailing from Maharashtra were arrested for alleged trafficking of the contraband. Acting on a tip-off, Narcotics Control Bureau sleuths intercepted a speeding car last evening along Andhra Pradesh-Tamil Nadu highway, north of Chennai and an inspection revealed concealment of 220 kg of ganja in the vehicle, an NCB release here said today. Preliminary investigation revealed that the car was proceeding towards the city from Andhra Pradesh and the vehicle's registration number was fake. Sheik Ansar, Sheik Ahmed, and Sushil Thakrae hailing from Amaravati district of Maharashtra were arrested for alleged trafficking, it said. During interrogation, the accused confessed that the contraband was trafficked allegedly on the directions of a person identified as Israeli, who supplied ganja to various places on demand.
