Security forces seized 217 kg of gold and arrested five Myanmarese nationals from near the Mizoram-Myanmar border in Champai district, police said today. The five Myanmarese nationals were arrested yesterday from Vaphai village in the district for allegedly smuggling gold bars worth around Rs 927 lakh, they said. The gold and the arrested persons were handed over to the officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence in Champhai town, the police added.
Three persons were arrested today for allegedly assaulting, abusing and chopping off a Muslim youth's beard at sector-37, here, police said. The accused were identified as Gaurav, Eklash from Uttar Pradesh and Nitin from Harayana, the police said. The incident occurred on July 31 when the accused started insulting the victim in Khandsa Mandi area. "Jaffruddin initially ignored the religious insults but he finally retorted. Following which, the accused persons assaulted Jaffruddin. Then they took him to a saloon and chopped his beard off", Gurgaon Police PRO Subhash Bokan told PTI. Before leaving the saloon, the accused warned the victim with dire consequences if he approached the police, the officer said. Enraged because she refused to talk to him, a 22-year-old man allegedly killed a minor girl at Tilgavan village in the district, police today said. Amit Burman (22), the accused, was allegedly in a relationship with the 16-year-old victim. Last night the girl, who lived on the outskirts of the village with her family, refused to talk to him on phone, police said. He then called the girl's sister and asked her to persuade the girl to speak to him, but the girl did not budge. Angered, Burman went to her house, said Rajaram Dube, Panagar police station in-charge. He first attacked the girl's sister, following which she and two other sisters of the victim ran out alongwith their mother to save themselves, the police officer said. With an aim to deliver "speedy justice" to people, Patna (central range) Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Rajesh Kumar has prescribed five measures for timely completion of investigations, an official order said. The DIG has fixed schedules for Sub-Divisional Police Officers (SDPOs), Inspectors and Investigating Officers as part of his efforts to ensure time-bound investigation, the order issued yesterday said. "All police officers will have to comply with the sutras (rules) for effective and speedy action, failing which strict action would be taken against them," Kumar said. As per the order, the SDPOs and inspectors will have to complete the "supervision report" within 10 days of the institution of cases at the police stations. If they fail to meet the deadline, the work will have to be carried out by DySP or another officer. Three persons were arrested today in Goa for their alleged involvement in the violence during the Maratha reservation agitation on July 25 in Navi Mumbai in Maharashtra, police said. The Maratha reservation stir in Navi Mumbai had turned violent on July 25 and it also led to the death of a 21-year-old man, Rohan Todkar, who was allegedly assaulted by a mob on that day. Todkar succumbed to his injuries in state-run JJ Hospital in Mumbai's Byculla area on July 27. A murder case was registered in this connection at Kopar Khairane police station and the probe was later transferred to Navi Mumbai Crime Branch. A 14-year-old school student was allegedly abducted and gang raped by a group of youths, including her relatives, at Ajnala town, police said today. According to a complaint filed by the victim's parents yesterday, the minor girl was abducted on July 27, they said. The victim was reportedly abducted by one Raman, his brother Rubi (both distant relatives of the victim), Sukhdev Singh and Randeep Singh, police said. The incident took place when the girl was returning home from school, they said. She was taken to an isolated place by the accused and gang raped, police said. An FIR has been registered in the case, they said, adding efforts were on to trace the accused.
The Indian Penal Code's provision on adultery violates the fundamental Right to Equality as it treats married men and women differently, the Supreme Court said today. Terming IPC's Section 497 "manifestly arbitrary", a five-judge Constitution bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra said it treats a married woman as "chattel" because her relationship with a married man depends on the "consent or connivance of her husband". The bench, also comprising Justices R F Nariman, A M Khanwilkar, D Y Chandrachud and Indu Malhotra, which is hearing a petition challenging the constitutional validity of Section 497, was critical of a part of the provision stating that no offence of adultery is made out if a married woman enters into a sexual relationship with a married man with the consent of her husband. Pakistan's Supreme Court today disqualified a leader of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif's party from holding a public office for five years on charges of contempt for making anti-judiciary remarks. Tallal Chaudry of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz was found guilty by the three-member bench of the apex court headed by Justice Gulzar Ahmad. The court had initiated contempt proceedings against Chaudry for "derogatory and contemptuous speeches/statements" related to the court, according to a notification issued on February 2. The court also slapped a fined of Rs0.1 million on him. Following the conviction, Chaudry, who lost the July 25 General Election from Faisalabad's NA-102 constituency, will be disqualified from holding public office for five years. He can file a review petition against the judgment. Chaudry is the second PML-N leader convicted for contempt of court.
A Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) jawan was crushed to death by a speeding truck on National Highway 2 in Bihar's Gaya district today. The motorcycle-borne SSB personnel, identified as Manish Kumar Verma, was on his way to join duty at the SSB battalion headquarters at Amas in Gaya district when a speeding truck crushed him to death on the highway. The accident spot falls under Barachatti police station area. The deceased was a resident of Barhi Bazar of Hazaribagh district in Jharkhand, Barachatti police station SHO Chetnanand said. Both the driver and cleaner of the truck managed to escape from the spot along with the truck after the incident, the SHO said.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat has said all guilty persons in the Rs 300-crore NH 74 compensation scam will be punished. "There will no compromise on corruption under any circumstance. Our government's policy is clear. Anyone involved in the scam, be it a low-level employee or a senior bureaucrat, should be ready to face action," the chief minister told reporters here yesterday. The special investigation team probing thescam submitted its report to chief secretary Utpal Kumar Singh. The possible role of senior bureaucrats in the scam was mentioned in the report. Though authorities are tight-lipped about the officials whose names have come up in the scam, sources said permission has been sought from Department of Personnel and Training to initiate action against guilty persons. Twenty persons, including four PCS officials, have till date been arrested by the SIT in the compensation scam. The scam came to light in March 2017 when an IAS officer found irregularities in .
The Bombay High Court on Thursday rejected the status report filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Special Investigation Team (SIT) in the Narendra Dabholkar and Govind Pansare murder cases.The court also criticised the agencies for submitting similar reports every time as status reports in the matter.Dabholkar was murdered by unknown bike-borne assailants on August 20, 2013, in Pune, while he was returning home from a morning walk.A CBI investigation is underway in the matter and is being monitored by the Bombay High Court. The Delhi High Court on Thursday extended the interim protection granted to the in-laws of the air hostess who committed suicide recently till September 17.The court further said the next hearing in the case would take place on the same day.On July 13, the Delhi-based air hostess, Anissia Batra, jumped off the terrace of her house after a heated argument with her husband, Mayank Singhvi.Before her death, the air hostess had allegedly sent a message to her friend on WhatsApp, stating that she was locked up in a room by Singhvi. She had also asked her friend to inform the police of the same.On July 16, the Delhi Police arrested Singhvi and subsequently sent him to a 14-day judicial custody in the case.A week later, the court granted interim protection from arrest to Batra's in-laws and also sought a status report from the Delhi Police.On a related note, the Delhi Police's Crime Branch is probing the case.
The Balasore police today launched a manhunt to nab a person who allegedly raped a college girl after administering an injection to her before committing the crime. The incident occurred on July 28 when the girl, a first year student, was going to Gopalpur College under Khantapada police station area in Balasore district. According to a complaint lodged in Khantapada police station by the victim, one Kanhu Charana Jena of Digabhanra village under Soro Police Station area took her to a house at Karanjabindha village and raped her. The girl claimed in the FIR that Jena had repeatedly raped her after administering an injection to her. The incident was reported to the police yesterday.
