Aircel-Maxis: CBI names Chidambaram, Karti in fresh chargesheet

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday filed a fresh chargesheet in the Aircel-Maxis case in a Delhi Court against 18 accused, including former finance minister P Chidambaram, his son, Karti, and select government officials (serving and retired).In its new chargesheet, the CBI said that two sets of money trails were discovered regarding Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance.The investigative agency has accused Chidambaram of misusing power, alleging that he flouted norms to grant FIPB clearance to M/S Global Communication Holding Services Ltd.The Patiala House Court will take cognisance of the matter on July 31.On July 10, the Enforcement Directorate had filed a detailed reply in the Aircel-Maxis money laundering case and opposed Chidambaram's anticipatory bail.In its statement, the ED said that they have come to a bonafide conclusion that under anticipatory bail, it will not be possible to reach the truth.Earlier, the Patiala House Court had extended ...

Haryana to launch scheme for quick disposal of heinous crimes

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has given approval for the launch of a scheme to identify and take appropriate measures in expeditiously disposing heinous crimes, an official spokesperson said today. Under the Identified Crime Scheme, state and district-level committees will be constituted, which will be headed by the additional chief secretary and deputy commissioners respectively, the spokesperson said. "The Haryana government is making strenuous efforts to rein in heinous and sensational crimes like dacoity, murder, terrorist activities, rape, gang rape, rape of small girls, kidnapping etc," he said. The district-level committees will meet on the first Tuesday of every month, identify heinous and sensational crimes during the month, if any, and submit recommendations to the state-level committee, which would decide on its inclusion in 'Identified Crimes', the official said. CBI files charge sheet against Chidambaram, son in Aircel-Maxis case

The CBI today filed a supplementary charge sheet against former finance minister P Chidambaram and his son Karti, naming them accused in the Aircel Maxis deal case. The charge sheet was filed before special CBI judge O P Saini who has fixed July 31 for considering the document. The senior Congress leader's role had come under the scanner of investigating agencies in the Aircel-Maxis deal of Rs 3,500 crore and INX Media case involving Rs 305 crore. It was during his tenure as the finance minister in the UPA-I government that clearance from the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) was granted to the two ventures in which alleged irregularities have been found.

Gandhi family has nothing to do with AgustaWestland case: Antony

Former Defence Minister AK Antony on Thursday said that it was the Congress party which initiated a probe into the AgustaWestland case and that the Gandhi family is not even remotely related with case.Antony, a Congress Working Committee member, also accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of spreading false propaganda in the case.Addressing the media, Antyony said, "In AgustaWestland case, we took the decision to probe. Former Arunachal MLA's death case handed to CBI

The Arunachal Pradesh government has handed over the probe into the death of former MLA Ngurang Pinch eight months ago to the CBI, official sources said today. The government's decision to hand over the case to the central investigating agency was communicated to the CBI director by state Home Commissioner A C Verma yesterday, the sources said. The letter termed the case as "serious and sensitive" and said despite handing it over the case to crime branchs special investigating team (SIT) nothing conclusive emerged from the probe even after seven months since the case was transferred to it. "Further, there are representations from public to transfer the case to CBI," the letter read. The body of Pinch, who was the chairman of Arunachal Pradesh Agriculture Marketing Board, was found floating in a river in Papum Pare district on November 18 last year. Maryam meets Nawaz today for first time since arrest

Monsoon session of bicameral legislature in Bihar to begin

The monsoon session of both houses of the legislature in Bihar, scheduled to begin tomorrow, is likely to be stormy with the opposition poised to corner the state government on the issues of law and order and alleged faulty implementation of prohibition law. The brief session, which will end on July 26, will have a total of five working days during which the Nitish Kumar government is scheduled to table amendments to its excise and prohibition law. Man thrashed over suspcion of being child lifter

A man, who had come to meet his son in Karnataka's Mandya district was thrashed by a mob over suspicion of being a child lifter.The victim, who was a divorcee, had come to meet his son and asked him to come with him.As his child refused to come with him, the people mistook the man for a child lifter and assaulted him.Earlier on July 13, a man was lynched to death and two got severely injured after a mob attacked them on suspicion of being child-traffickers in Karnataka's Bidar district.Earlier today, Home Minister Rajnath Singh in Lok Sabha termed mob lynching incidents "unfortunate" and underscored that social media is being misused to spread fake news."These are unfortunate incidents. Religious teacher rapes minor in Darbhanga

In another case of sexual assault, a 65-year-old religious teacher was arrested on Wednesday for alleged rape of an eight-year-old girl in a village in Darbhanga district.The police officer Anuj Kumar who is handling the case told ANI, "The victim suffered serious injuries to her private parts. We have arrested Mohammad Mozib-ur Rahman and has initiated an investigation into the matter."The victim was rushed to the Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) where her condition is said to be still critical. The gruesome incident occurred in a village under the jurisdiction of the Hayaghat police station on July 17.The accused apparently used to visit the victim's house around 9 pm every day to give tuition on religious texts. FIR against two Cong leaders for revealing molestation

A case has been filed against Goa Congress' women's wing chief, her deputy and three other persons for allegedly revealing the identity of a molestation victim, the police said today. Shiv Sena's Goa unit vice president Rakhi Prabhudesai Naik had filed a complaint against them last week for revealing the identity of a 17-year-old girl, who was allegedly molested by a man at Netravali village in South Goa district. The Goa Women Police Station today filed an FIR against state Congress' women's wing president Pratima Coutinho, its vice president Savitri Kavlekar, Netravali village panchayat's deputy sarpanch Abhijit Desai and panch members Vitthal Gaonkar and Prakash Bhagat. Philips wins patent battle in Delhi HC

Dutch electronic major Philips has won a major legal battle here with the Delhi High Court ruling that it has a patent right over a channel decoding technology used for DVD video playback function in a DVD player which was infringed upon by two domestic manufacturers. The high court decreed the two lawsuits filed by Koninklijke Philips Electronics NV against the Delhi-based firms which claimed that they were engaged in manufacture, assembly and sale of DVD video players under various brands. Philips, which was represented by advocate Pravin Anand, claimed that it was the registered proprietor of IN-184753 which concerns channel modulation' which involves a coding step that is performed directly before the storage of the data. Parents kill newborn fearing mockery by family members

Fear of ridicule from family members allegedly prompted a daily wage labourer and his wife to kill their newborn baby, their sixth offspring, in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district, a police officer said. The parents with three daughters, two sons and several grandchildren, have killed the girl child for the fear of being taunted by their children and grandchildren, Inspector-in-Charge of Maynaguri police station, Nandakumar Dutta said. Junior clerk arrested by vigilance

A junior clerk of SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack was arrested by Vigilance for allegedly accepting Rs 5,000 bribe from a man to prepare his grand mother's pay arrear bill. Dillip Kumar Rout, a junior clerk in the Office of Superintendent of SCB Medical College and Hospital, was arrested yesterday after being caught red-handed by Vigilance officers while accepting illegal gratification of Rs 5,000 from the complainant, a vigilance release said. Rout had demanded bribe from Rohit Kumar Nayak of Mangalabag area of Cuttack to prepare arrear bill of 7th Pay Commission of Sagar Dei, his grand mother, a retired employee of SCB Medical College, it said. Vigilance sleuths who had laid a trap recovered the bribe money of Rs 5,000 from the pant pocket of Rout and seized the amount in presence of witnesses, the release said. While Rout was arrested his residential house at CDA, Cuttack and government quarter at SCB Medical Compound were searched, the release added.

Lekhi demands dissolution of SC-appointed committee on sealing

Expressing concern over the sealing drive in the national capital, BJP member Meenakshi Lekhi today demanded dissolution of the Supreme Court- appointed monitoring committee. Accusing the committee of tyrannical behaviour, she said it was not working according to the law and even ignoring orders of the court. Russian officials to meet suspected spy jailed in US

Russian Embassy officials are to meet with a Siberian gun rights activist jailed in Washington on charges of spying on the United States. The Embassy said in a Facebook post that consular officials will meet with Maria Butina tomorrow for the first time since her Sunday arrest, and will provide her "all necessary help". Butina, 29, denies wrongdoing, and the Russian government has lashed out at the arrest as driven by US domestic politics and "anti-Russian hysteria". Federal prosecutors accuse Butina of being a covert Russian agent, having contacts with the KGB successor agency FSB, and using sex and deception to forge influential US connections. One of her former teachers told The Associated Press that just before her arrest she was considering a job in Silicon Valley.
