A 27-year-old Indian man in Canada has been shot dead in his home by four assailants in Brampton city, police said. Palwinder Singh was a truck driver and had immigrated to Canada in 2009. Singh was killed after gunfire erupted at his home in Donwoods Court in the area of Countryside Drive and Airport Road on Tuesday, police said. "The victim was pronounced dead on the scene," CBC news reported. Two men from Mississauga one of 18 years and another of 19 years surrendered and were charged with first-degree murder, police said. A six-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a minor at a school here, police said. The girl, a class 1 student, was lured by the 10-year-old boy studding at the same school, to a dilapidated building in the campus where he allegedly raped her yesterday, the police said. On the complaint of the girl's father, a case was registered and the accused presented before the Juvenile Justice Board, the police said. The girl was sent for medical examination, they said.
The Supreme Court today refused to stay the Madras High Court order upholding the Centre's decision to nominate three BJP members as MLAs to Puducherry Assembly. The apex court asked the speaker of Puducherry Assembly to allow the nominated members to function as MLAs till the adjudication of petition. A bench of justices A K Sikri and Ashok Bhushan issued notice to the Centre and the Puducherry government and asked them to file counter affidavit on the plea. The order came on pleas filed by Congress leaders, who had challenged the Madras High Court order and the Centre's decision to "unilaterally appoint" BJP members as MLAs. The high court on March 22 upheld the nomination of three BJP members to the assembly by the Centre and their swearing-in by Lt Governor Kiran Bedi, over which the Congress government had protested. Three motorcycle-borne men were killed after being hit by a speeding truck on the Kota-Jaipur National Highway in Bundi district, police said today. The accident occurred when all the three men were returning home yesterday. They were identified as Aakash Meghwal (17), Ravi Meghwal (17) and Giriraj Meghwal (25), Sub- Inspector at Talera police station Nand Lal said. Aakash and Ravi, both class 10 students, were returning home after attending coaching classes. They had sought lift from Giriraj, the police said. A 35-year-old woman was killed after being hit by a train in Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir, a railway police official said today. The woman was crossing railway tracks near Raya Morh when she was hit by train last evening, the official said, adding she died on the spot. Efforts are on to establish her identity.
Goa Police have filed a chargesheet against former minister Atanasio Monserratte in connection with the alleged rape of a minor girl in 2016. The Women's Police Station filed the 250-page chargesheet in North Goa district court yesterday after the investigation in the case was completed. Monserratte, 54, has been named as an accused in the case, a senior police official said. The girl, then aged 16, had filed a complaint in May 2016 alleging that the politician had drugged and raped her in March that year. She had also alleged that her mother "sold" her to Monserratte for Rs 50 lakh. Monserratte was arrested on May 5, 2016 and is out on bail. At that time, the politician had claimed that he was innocent and the case against him was "politically motivated". The girl's mother was not named in the chargesheet as there was no sufficient evidence that she sold her daughter, the police official said. A 60-year-old Village Defence Committee (VDC) member allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir, a police official said today. Baljeet Roy was found dead with a gun shot in his chest at Luddu Kansar village yesterday, the official said. He said Roy was a VDC member and had used his licensed .303 rifle to end his life. He was suffering from a disease and preliminary investigation suggested that he took the extreme step under depression. Police have started inquest proceedings.

Burglars held hostage an elderly couple for hours at their home in a Jaipur neighbourhood and decamped with cash, jewellery and a car early today, a police official said. Police suspect the involvement of the domestic help who worked at the couple's residence near Gopalpura bypass, Shipra Path police station sub-inspector Bhanwar Singh said. Police have confiscated three trucks illegally transporting cows to Haryana and arrested four persons on Saharanpur-Delhi highway in the neighbouring Shamli district, a police official said today. The trucks carrying 29 cows were intercepted near Kandhla town last evening, Circle Office Rajesh Tiwari said. The four persons - all from Haryana - have been booked under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, Tiwari said. The arrests were made after a group of activists held a protest in the area against smuggling of cows and demanded authorities to take action against people involved in it.
A man has been arrested for allegedly killing a cow after a heated argument with its owner in Rajpur village of Muzaffarnagar district, a police official said today. A case was registered against unidentified people for killing the cow on July 11, and Sachin was found involved in the incident, Jansath police station SHO Premvir Singh said. He has confessed that he shot dead the animal following an altercation with its owner at his home, Singh said.
