Constable killed after fight in bar in Sangli; three booked

A 29-year-old police constable was allegedly killed in an attack by three unidentified persons after a petty fight at a liquor bar in Maharashtra's Sangli district, a police official said today. Samadhan Mante, posted as constable at Miraj city police station, went to the bar at Kupwad Phata in Sangli, located about 370 km from here, and had an argument over some issue with three persons who were having drinks there late last night, he said. The argument led to a scuffle, following which one of the accused went outside the bar and brought a sharp weapon from his vehicle, he said. While Mante was busy arguing with the other two men, the person who brought the weapon allegedly attacked him with it, the official said. The constable sustained injuries on his chest, head and stomach and collapsed. He was taken to the hospital where doctors declared him dead before admission, he said. 6 held for 'sexually assaulting' Russian tourist in TN

Six people have been detained for allegedly sexually assaulting a 21-year-old Russian woman who is here on a tour, police said today. The woman was found unconscious in a service apartment on Monday and was taken to a hospital by one of the six men who are being questioned. On examination, the doctors found injuries on her body, including bite marks, and alerted police, they said. Police suspect that the foreign national lost consciousness under the influence of some drug, the nature of which was not known immediately. The woman, who is here for about a week, has regained consciousness and investigation is underway, the police added. Tiruvannamalai is a popular temple town in the state about 190 km from Chennai. The incident comes against the backdrop of the alleged rape of an 11-year-old hearing-impaired girl by 17 people over the past seven months in her apartment complex in Chennai.

Pakistan refutes India's allegations in Jadhav case

Pakistan on Tuesday filed a second counter-memorial on the conviction of retired Indian naval officer Kulbhushan Jadhav before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague.As part of reply, they refuted Indian allegations that Jadhav's wife and mother were mistreated when they visited him last year, as reported by the Express Tribune.After the latest rounds of hearing the world court is likely to fix the matter for the hearing sometime next year."The ICJ has been asked to consider whether individuals suspected of espionage had in practice often been excluded from the right to consular access-an argument never raised or considered previously," Pakistan's legal agent in the case, Khawar Qureshi, who had drafted the second counter-memorial was quoted by the Express Tribune as saying.On April 17, India had submitted a fresh set of pleadings in the ICJ. Delhi HC asks JNU not to take any coercive step against Kanhaiya till July 20

The Delhi High Court today directed Jawaharlal Nehru University not to take any coercive step on a fine imposed against its former students union president Kanhaiya Kumar till July 20. A Rs 10,000 fine was imposed on Kumar by an appellate authority of the university in connection with a 2016 incident in which anti-India slogans were allegedly raised at an event relating to Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru's hanging. Justice Rekha Palli, in an oral order, asked the university not to take any coercive action as far as depositing the fine is concerned. The matter came up before Justice Palli as the concerned judge was on leave. The judge said she has not read the file and the matter should be listed before the regular bench on July 20. Student killing: Prime accused nabbed, says police

The prime accused in the killing of an SFI leader in Kerala has been nabbed, a senior police official said today. Ernakulam Range IG Vijay Sakhare said Campus Front leader Muhammed, who is the first accused in the killing of the Ernakulam Maharajas College student Abhimanyu, has been taken into custody. Four arrested for looting money using fake Facebook account

Four persons were arrested for allegedly looting Rs six lakh from a businessman after luring him to meet a girl in whose name a fake Facebook account was created in Bargarh district, the police said. Bikash Agrawal (32), who is a wholesaler trader and a resident of Nuapada district, visited Paikamal in Bargarh district and collected Rs six lakh from his customers on June 18. Agarwal was asked to come to Manbhang dam through a Facebook messenger by one Pankaj Majhi who had opened a fake account in the name of the girl with whom Agarwal had developed friendship on the social network, the police said. As Agarwal reached the place, four persons appeared on two motorbikes, fired in the air to intimidate him and snatched his bag containing Rs six lakh. 304 kg ganja seized in TN, three held

Nearly 304 kg ganja worth Rs 60 lakh, meant to be smuggled to Sri Lanka, was seized early today at Mandapam near here and three persons arrested in this connection, police said. A patrol team of the Q branch police saw three men standing at Seeniappa dargah beach around 3 AM and found their behaviour suspicious. The officials also found 150 bags of the contraband by the coast and seized it following which the trio was arrested, they said adding the accused were waiting for a boat to illegally transport the ganja to the island nation.

Woman, paramour booked for killing husband

A woman and her paramour were booked for allegedly poising her husband to death here, the police said today. The duo, who are absconding, allegedly killed Afsar Ali, 30, in Subhash Nagar locality for opposing his wife's affair with the man, according to a complaint lodged by Ali's brother, Nawab. Ali was found dead in his house on July 9 and his wife had alleged that he committed suicide by consuming poison, a police official said. US charges Honduran congressman over drugs, firearms

The United States has slapped drugs and firearms charges on a member of congress in Honduras, accusing him yesterday of accepting more than USD 1 million in kickbacks to help fund his political career. Midence Oqueli Martinez Turcios, 57, and three other Hondurans, including a former mayor have been hit with indictments in a New York federal court and the United States is seeking their extradition, prosecutors said. Oqueli Martinez Turcios is charged with conspiring to import cocaine into the United States and two counts of weapons offenses. He faces a maximum sentence of life in prison if put on trial and convicted of the most serious charge against him. According to US officials, he received more than USD 1 million in bribes and other payments from his country's Cachiros cartel from 2004-2014, and personally escorted some cocaine shipments through Honduras. US police capture suspected serial killer in Texas

Police in Texas yesterday captured a man they described as a serial killer who took the lives of at least three people in seven days. Jose Gilberto Rodriguez was arrested after a 14-minute car chase with police, and charged with two counts of capital murder. A third murder charge was expected today once additional evidence was processed, police said. 8-year-old girl allegedly gang-raped in Dehradun

In yet another incident of sexual assault against minors, an eight-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped by five minor boys in Dehradun's Sahaspur.The incident took place on June 12, when the minor girl was playing alone outside her house after her parents left for work. Mueller seeks immunity for 5 witnesses in Manafort case

The special counsel in the Russia investigation is seeking immunity for five potential witnesses in the upcoming trial of President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort. The five individuals have indicated that they won't testify or provide other information "on the basis of their privilege against self-incrimination," Mueller's office told a federal judge in Virginia in a court filing yesterday. As a result, prosecutors are asking a judge to compel their testimony, under a condition of immunity, at Manafort's upcoming bank and tax fraud trial. 5 arrested for being involved in robbery, snatching cases

Five people were arrested for allegedly being involved in several robbery and snatching cases, an official said today. Seven mobile phones, a laptop and other stolen articles were recovered from their possession, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (south) Romil Baaniya. On July 9, at around 6 am, a head constable of the Delhi Police noticed that some men were trying to rob a pedestrian in Malviya Nagar, the DCP said. Manoj intervened and managed to apprehend one of the men while others fled away from the spot, he said. During interrogation, the accused, identified as Karanbeer, disclosed the names of his associates following which a raid was conducted at various places. Subsequently, his associates were also arrested, Baaniya said. The four other accused persons were identified as Sourabh, Nitesh, Chirag and Ankit, he added.

Stray bullet strikes, kills 9-year-old girl inside her home

Authorities say a stray bullet struck and killed a 9-year-old girl inside her southern New Jersey home. Bridgeton police say the shooting was reported around 12:30 am today. They say relatives drove the girl to a hospital but she was pronounced dead there a short time later. The girl's name has not been released. The shooting occurred about a block away from the girl's home. Authorities say the shots struck several vehicles and the girl's home. Authorities say the stray bullet that killed the girl went through the home's rear wall and into an adjacent room where it hit her. No other injuries were reported in the shooting.
