Man arrested for trying to rape mentally unstable girl

A 21-year-old man was arrested in Odisha's Jajpur district today for allegedly trying to rape a "mentally unstable" girl, a police officer said. Referring to the complaint filed by the girl's parents, the officer said that the 13-year-old girl was allegedly attacked yesterday afternoon while attending to the nature's call at Bada Balikuda village in Balichandrapur police station area of the district. "Finding her alone in the bushes, the accused, who hails from the same village, apparently held her from behind, and tried to undress her. On hearing the girl scream, local people rushed to her rescue," said Rakesh Chandra Tripathy, the inspector-in-charge of Bailchandrapur police station. April 2 violence during Dalit protests against SC ruling: 41 sent up for trial

A total of 41 persons, including some local BSP leaders, were sent up today for trial for their alleged roles in the wide-spread violence here during the April 2 Bharat Bandh by Dalits against a Supreme Court ruling, "diluting" some stringent provisions of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. Those sent up for the trial by the district sessions court included former chief Kamal Gautam of Bahujan Samaj Party's district unit and Bhim Army's district in-charge Ukar Bavra, said a district prosecution official. The case was sent up for trial by Chief Judicial Magistrate Shailendra Singh, who also directed the accused to appear before the sessions court on August 16. According to the prosecution 14 of the 41 accused persons in the case have been granted bail, while 27 others are still in jail. Kanhaiya Kumar moves HC against fine imposed by JNU

Former JNU students union (JNUSU) president Kanhaiya Kumar has moved the Delhi High Court against the fine imposed on him by a high-level panel of the university in connection with a 2016 incident of alleged anti-India slogans being raised at an event relating to Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru's hanging. On February 9, 2016, a poetry event was held at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in connection with the third anniversary of Guru's hanging for his role in the attack on Parliament on December 13, 2001. Kumar's plea, filed through advocate Tarannum Cheema, is listed for hearing tomorrow before Justice Siddharth Mridul. Kingpin in Karnal bank robbery case held

The Haryana Police today arrested Anil alias Singhania, the alleged kingpin of the Karnal bank robbery case and a member of Delhi's notorious inter-state Neeraj Bawana gang, in Jualan of Jind district. Four country-made pistols, five live cartridges and a stolen motorcycle were recovered from his possession, a police spokesman said. At least eight cases of bank robbery, loot, dacoity, theft and those under the Arms Act are registered against the accused in Haryana and Delhi, he said. The spokesman said that during preliminary interrogation, the accused confessed to have committed bank robbery of Rs 9.80 lakh in a bank in Karnal in 2012 with the help of his five accomplices. He said police had got information about a man roaming on a motorcycle in the Julana area under suspicious circumstances. Pregnant woman dies due to medical negligence in J-K, magisterial inquiry ordered

A 35-year-old pregnant woman died allegedly due to medical negligence while going through labour pain at a hospital in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir today, prompting authorities to order a magisterial inquiry, officials said. Shaista Begum, a resident of Binola Amritgarh Chiralla village, was brought to district hospital Doda last evening and died this morning, triggering protests by her relatives who accused the doctors and paramedical staff of negligence, the officials said. Begum's husband Imtiaz Ahmad Khan alleged that she was left unattended in the labour room after initial treatment, resulting in the death of the woman and the unborn child. Can minor witnesses' testimony be video-recorded to spare them from deposing in court: HC to Maha govt

The Bombay High Court today asked the Maharashtra government to consider the possibility of video recording the statements of minor witnesses instead of having them to depose in a court room. A bench of justices Naresh Patil and GS Kulkarni asked the state to consider making use of "technology" and employing means such as video conferencing to admit a child's testimony without calling the child to the court as a witness. The bench stated this after Advocate General (AG) Ashutosh Kumbhakoni informed it that the state government had prepared a plan to make child friendly court rooms across the state. The court was hearing suo motu the issue of constructing child-friendly courts across Maharashtra. Flight attendant's in-laws to be questioned after July 20: Police

The in-laws of a female flight attendant, who allegedly committed suicide in south Delhi's Panchsheel Park, will be questioned after July 20, police said today. Anissia Batra (39), who worked with a German airline, allegedly jumped from the terrace of her house on Friday. The victim's family has alleged that her husband Mayank Singhvi used to physically abuse her. They have also accused Singhvi's parents of harassing their daughter for dowry. Inspector 'claims' paying bribe to top brass in WhatApp Chat, suspended: Police

A police inspector has been suspended here for allegedly claiming in a purported WhatsApp chat that he paid a "bribe" of Rs 3.5 lakh to the top brass of his department for getting the desired posting, an official said today. Police today informed the Kerala High Court that a man, who was one of the accused in chopping off the hand of a professor a few years ago, had a key role in the killing of an SFI leader at a government college here recently. Police said Manaf, who was the 13th accused in the case of chopping off the hand of professor T J Joseph in 2010 on charges of blasphemy, had an important role in executing the killing of SFI leader and Ernakulam Maharaja's college student Abhimanyu. A division bench, comprising Justice P R Ramachandra Menon and Devan Ramachandran, was considering three separate pleas filed by relatives of the alleged accused in the killing, alleging harassment by police probing the case. Elderly man found hanging in UP's Mathura

An elderly man was today found hanging from the roof of a shrine in the Mant area here, police said. The body was found by the villagers who later informed the police, DySP Jagveer Singh Chauhan said. A bag containing some clothes and a walking stick was found at the spot, he said. A woman was crushed to death when she came under the rear tyre of a Haryana roadways bus near polytechnic chowk here, police said today. After an 11-year-old hearing impaired girl was allegedly raped multiple times over the past seven months, 17 of her suspected tormentors were arrested, with some beaten up and dragged down the stairwell of a court today by angry lawyers, police said.
