Khirki raid: Court frames charges of molestation against Somnath Bharti

Former Delhi Law minister Somnath Bharti will face trial in connection with the 2014 midnight raid at Khirki Extension here, with a Delhi court today framing molestation charges against him. An FIR was lodged by police in the case on the court's direction after an Ugandan woman filed a plea on January 18, 2014. She had sought lodging of criminal case against unknown persons in the incident. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal passed the directions after the AAP politician and others pleaded not guilty and said they will face trial. The court said there was a sufficient prima facie case against all the accused persons to put them on trial. Centre seeks report on e-tailers compliance with new declaration norms

The Centre has asked state governments to provide a detailed report on e-commerce firms printing details like expiry date, best before use and customer care contact information on pre-packaged goods, a senior Consumer Affairs Ministry official said today. From January 1, e-commerce companies have been mandated to comply with new declaration norms for packaged goods except for medicines as perthe Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Amendment Rules, 2017. At present, only MRP is printed on the goods sold online. "We have written to state governments to submit a status report on implementation of new declaration norms by the e-commerce firms," the official told PTI. Companies like Amazon, Flipkart and Snapdeal are complying with the new declaration rules. However, the states have been asked to give a detailed report, the official said. Ishrat's mother files objection to discharge pleas of ex-cops

The mother of Ishrat Jahan, who was killed in an alleged fake encounter by the Gujarat Police along with three others, today filed an objection to the discharge applications of two retired police officers accused in the 2004 case. Shamima Kauser filed a plea in a special CBI court here, opposing the discharge applications of retired police officers D G Vanzara and N K Amin, and submitted that there was "clinching" evidence against the two. The court of special CBI judge J K Pandya, who had reserved his order for today after hearing arguments of the two accused and the CBI, said he would further hear the matter in the light of objections raised from the victim's side. In her objection plea, filed through her lawyer P I Parvez, Kauser said the two accused should not be discharged as there was "clinching" evidence against them. She said the evidence on record showed that both were present at the site where Jahan and the others were shot dead by the police on the outskirts of Ahmedabad

Flight attendant suicide case: Husband sent to 14-day judicial custody

A Delhi court today sent the husband of a female flight attendant, who allegedly committed suicide in south Delhi's Panchsheel Park on Friday, to two weeks' judicial custody. Metropolitan Magistrate Anuj Kumar sent Mayank Singhvi to 14 days' judicial remand after Delhi police moved an application saying the accused was not required for custodial interrogation and he be sent to JC. Singhvi was arrested yesterday evening. Mayank's wife, Anissia Batra (39), worked with a German airline. She allegedly jumped from the terrace of her house on Friday. Mayank rushed her to a nearby hospital, where she was declared brought dead. Russia condemned by rights court over Politkovskaya, Pussy Riot

The European Court of Human Rights today condemned Russia over its investigation into murdered journalist Anna Politkovskaya and its treatment of the protest group Pussy Riot in two separate judgements. In the case of Politkovskaya, who was gunned down in Moscow in 2006, the court ruled that Russia "had failed to take adequate investigatory steps to find the person or persons who had commissioned the murder". The judges at the court in Strasbourg found that Russian investigators should have explored possibilities that the crime was ordered by "agents from Russia's FSB domestic secret service or of the administration of the Chechen Republic". The case was filed at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) by Politkovskaya's family, who claimed Russia had not carried out a proper investigation despite the conviction of five men over the killing. 5 boys rape 8-year-old girl in Uttarakhand

Five boys allegedly raped an eight-year-old girl in their neighbourhood when her parents were not at home in Sahaspur, the police said today. During questioning by police, the boys, aged between nine to 14 years, said that they had watched pornography on a mobile phone two days before committing the crime, a police official said. The alleged incident, that took place on July 12, came to light late on saturday evening when the victim's parents reported the matter to the police. The accused boys were detained and they were remanded to a juvenile home by Chief Magistrate of Juvenile Justice Board Bhavdeep Rawat. According to the police official, the girl was playing outside her house, when the boys lured her to an empty house, which belonged to one of the accused, by offering her chocolates and gangraped her. Woman stabbed to death by brother-in-law in Badarpur

A 17-year-old widow was allegedly stabbed to death by her brother-in-law and his accomplices in south east Delhi's Badarpur, police said today. A PCR call about stabbing of a woman was received at Badarpur police station around 7.45 pm yesterday. A police team reached the spot at Tajpur Pahari in Badarpur and found the woman lying unconscious on the roof of her house with stab injuries. She was rushed to Apollo Hospital where doctors declared her brought dead, said Chinmoy Biswal, DCP (South East). "The victim's mother and grandparents were present at the spot when the incident took place. Two men arrested for 2016's Meek Mill Concert shootings

: Two men were arrested for the shooting of two people outside a 2016 Meek Mill concert in Connecticut. Travis Ward and Jaquan Graves of New Haven were shot in the parking lot of the Oakdale Theatre in Wallingford, after the rapper's gig in December two years ago. Two others were injured in gunfire. According to Billboard, the police said the accused, Kyle Hampton (23) and Tivon Edwards (33), both of New Haven, have been charged with first-degree manslaughter and other charges. The shooting does not appear to be directly related to the artiste. Hampton's bail has been set at USD 1 million and he will appear in court on July 31, while Edwards will be arraigned July 23. Avenfield verdict: Islamabad HC to hear Sharif family's pleas

Explain why no probe into graft charges against OPS: HC to DVAC

The Madras High Court today asked the anti-graft body in Tamil Nadu to explain, by July 23, why no probe was initiated even three months after a complaint was lodged against Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam, alleging amassment of disproportionate assets by him. It also sought to know why a CBI probe should not be ordered into the allegations against the AIADMK leader. When the plea moved by the DMK came up for hearing, Justice G Jayachandran directed the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) to explain by July 23 why no investigation had begun even three months after a complaint alleging amassment of assets disproportionate to his known sources of income was lodged against Panneerselvam. Arsenal sponsorship deal 'hit by Chinese fraud'

English Premier League club Arsenal has launched an investigation after it was caught up in an alleged fraud involving its sponsorship deal with Chinese carmaker BYD. Arsenal said the deal, which was launched with great fanfare in May, was among those affected after BYD revealed what it described as a plot to defraud advertising agencies. BYD said last week that a woman posing as the marketing manager of its Shanghai branch signed multiple contracts with advertising agencies to promote the company. One of the affected ad firms, Shanghai Jingzhi, has said BYD had been forced to refuse payment on contracts worth 1.1 billion yuan ($165 million). Mentally deranged woman beaten up on "child-lifter" charges

A mentally deranged woman has been beaten up in Jalpaiguri district of North Bengal on suspicion of being child-lifter, police said today. The incident occurred yesterday evening at around 8 pm at Barogharia Gram Panchayat area in Dhupguri Block. Locals claimed thar the woman was spotted in the neighbourhood for the past few days and used candies to lure children. "There have been incidents of child trafficking here. We found that the woman was carrying several candies," Samir Roy, a resident of Barogharia said. The bruised woman was taken to a hospital yesterday and was released after initial treatment. Indonesia police kill 11 in crime fight ahead of Asian Games

Indonesian police have killed 11 suspected petty criminals and shot dozens more in a heavy-handed campaign to free the capital, Jakarta, of street crime before next month's Asian Games. Jakarta Police Spokesman Prabowo Argo Yuwono said today nearly 2,000 people have been arrested since the operation began July 2. He said 52 were shot for resisting arrest and 11 of them died. He said it's part of a two-month operation against thieves, thugs and other street criminals to boost security for the Asian Games, which take place in Jakarta and Palembang from August 18 to September 3. Yuwono said, "Police won't hesitate to take firm measures, including shooting suspects if they resist arrest."
