Debt burden drives man to kill wife, self

Unable to bear the burden of mounting loan, a 40-year-old man allegedly strangulated his wife to death and killed self at Kalyani in Nadia district early today, police said. Bapi Chakraborty was found hanging in a room, while the body of his wife Jhuma (32) was lying on bed in the same room which was bolted from inside. The bodies have been sent for postmortem examination. The couple used to fight frequently over repayment of the loans and they quarrelled last night also, police said. Bapi, who used to do odd jobs, rang up his sister living in another town of the same district, at around 2 am and informed her that he had strangulated his wife and was now going to kill himself. The couple's two teenaged sons, Biplab and Biswajit, was in another room. The horrified woman called up Bapi's sons and told them about their father's phone call. Pak anti-corruption court dismisses Sharif's plea to transfer remaining two cases

Nawaz Sharif's petition to transfer the remaining two corruption cases against him to another accountability court was dismissed today, media reports said today, in another blow to the embattled former Pakistan prime minister on the eve of his return to the country and possible arrest. Sharif, who is currently in London to tend to his ailing wife Kulsoom, is expected to return to Pakistan tomorrow, days after being sentenced to 11 years in prison by an anti-corruption court in the Avenfield properties case, one of the three corruption cases against him following the Panama Papers scandal. Judge Muhammad Bashir of the Islamabad Accountability Court stated that after passing the judgment and framing charges on members of the Sharif family, he can not recuse himself from the case, Geo TV reported. Considering filing closure report in missing JNU student case: CBI to HC

Over a year after it was handed over the probe, the CBI today said it was seriously considering filing a closure report in the missing case of JNU student Najeeb Ahmed, who had disappeared from the varsity campus nearly two years ago. "We are seriously contemplating whether to file a closure report," the agency told a Delhi High Court bench of Justices S Muralidhar and Vinod Goel. However, the agency made it clear that it was going to examine a few more aspects before taking a final decision in this regard. Ahmed had gone missing from the Mahi-Mandvi hostel of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on October 15, 2016 following a scuffle with some other students, allegedly affiliated to the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the previous night. The CBI also told the court that till date its probe has not found any evidence to show any crime was committed, nor did it find any material to arrest or take coercive action against nine students who are suspected by Ahmed's family of .

CBI arrests Air One Aviation CMD Alok Sharma, BCAS official

The CBI has arrested Bureau of Civil Aviation Security(BCAS) official Rahul Rathore and Air One Aviation CMD Alok Sharma in the case related to airport access pass issued to journalist Upendra Rai in alleged violation of norms, officials said today. Rai and Chief Security Officer of the companyPrasun Roy were booked by the agency in connection with the case, they said. It is alleged that Rai in criminal conspiracy with Prasun Roy and others cheated the BCAS and the Delhi International Airport (DIAL) and fraudulently obtained a temporary and later a permanent Aerodrome Entry Pass (AEP). UP: Class 2 girl kidnapped, raped

A seven-year-old girl was kidnapped and raped in the neighbouring Basti district, police said today. A case of rape and kidnapping was registered against unidentified persons while the victim was undergoing treatment in a hospital where her condition was critical, they said. The incident, which took place in Kalwari area, came to light yesterday morning when villagers found the girl lying unconscious in a field with blood spots on her clothes, police said. On getting information the parents of the girl reached the spot and informed the police. Woman allegedly confined after being given triple talaq: police

A case of dowry death has been registered against the husband and in-laws of a woman who was given triple talaq over phone and allegedly locked up for a month without food and water leading to her death, police said today. The deceased is survived by a six-year-old child. The victim's sister has alleged that the deceased woman's husband used to beat her up for dowry. First she was given triple talaq, then was kept confined inside a room without food and water, the victim's sister alleged. Taking cognisance of the matter, the district police registered a dowry death case against the woman's husband and in-laws. Last week a woman from Mahoba was reportedly given triple talaq and forced to leave her husband's house because the 'chapati' she had prepared was burnt.

College sex scandal: HC sets deadline for completion of trial

The Madras High Court today set a September 10 deadline for the CB-CID to file its final charge sheet in the case of a woman professor who allegedly tried to 'lure' students to extend sexual favours to some varsity officials for marks, and directed the lower court to complete the trial within six months from that date. Dismissing the bail plea one of the accused, Karuppasamy, Justice G R Swaminathan said students were affected in the case and hence bail could not be granted to him. The judge also made it clear that none of the accused in the case should be granted bail till the completion of the trial. The judge ordered the CB-CID to file the final chargesheet before September 10 and directed the Virudhunagar court to complete the trial within six months from that date. Germany can extradite Puigdemont to Spain for graft not rebellion: Court

A German court today ruled that deposed Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont may be extradited to Spain but only for alleged corruption and not on the more serious charge of rebellion. "Extradition on the accusation of misappropriation of public funds is permissible; extradition on the accusation of rebellion is not permissible," the superior regional court of Schleswig-Holstein state said in a statement. Puigdemont was detained in Germany in late March on a European arrest warrant from Spain for his role in Catalonia's failed independence bid last October.

Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi today urged Kolkata Police to immediately arrest the people responsible for allegedly sexually assaulting a 2-year-old boy at a playschool in the city. Consumer forum fines CPWD, says not providing dustbins is deficiency in service

A consumer court here has held the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) guilty of "deficiency in service" for not providing garbage bins in a government residential colony. The consumer forum, New Delhi district, headed by President Arun Kumar Arya, slapped a fine of Rs 5,000 on the CPWD, a premier central government authority in-charge of public sector works, while directing it to immediately provide three dustbins to the complainant. "Bare perusal of the complaint addressed to opposite party (OP) (CPWD) makes it is clear that there is no garbage bin in the colony of the complainant. Non-providing of the garbage bin by OP amounts to deficiency in service. "We therefore hold OP guilty of deficiency in service and direct them as under. Immediately provide three garbage bins to the complainant.
