The Bihar government has approved amendments to the stringent prohibition law in the state, proposing a reduction in the quantum of sentence for those held guilty of violating the anti-liquor law. The nod to the proposed amendments, which would be tabled during the Monsoon Session of the state legislature scheduled later this month, was given at a meeting of the state cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar late last evening, Principal Secretary, Cabinet Secretariat department, Arun Kumar Singh told mediapersons. He, however, did not divulge the contents of the proposed amendment bill. Advocate General Lalit Kishor told a news channel that the amendments proposed a reduction in the quantum of punishment for those involved in sale and manufacture of liquor as well as for those consuming alcohol, including the first-time offenders. A burglar apparently indulged in an impromptu victory dance after other members of the gang successfully broke into multiple shops in north Delhi's Lahori Gate area. A 20-year-old man was allegedly stabbed to death in front of his wife by one of his friends, following a quarrel over serving cold water, in northwest Delhi's Bharat Nagar, police said today. The incident occurred on the intervening night of July 11 and 12, they said, adding that the victim, Sagar, was a resident of Jahangirpuri. Sagar, accompanied by his wife, had gone to meet his friends at the JJ colony. Since it was hot, the victim asked the accused, Gaurav, to get him cold water. This led to a fight between the accused and the victim, the police said, adding that Gaurav stabbed Sagar multiple times with a knife in front of his wife. A probe has been launched into the incident and a hunt is on for the accused.
Two members of a family, including a minor, drowned today in Mayurbhanj district of Odisha, police said. The incident took place in Rairangpur area of the district, when Heena Mahali (24) and her brother Sagar (10) went to river Khadkei for a bath, they said. The sister died while trying to save her brother from drowning, a police officer said. Fire brigade personnel fished out the bodies from the downstream of the river, said Ranjan Kumar Sethi, IIC, Rairangpur Town police station. He claimed that most of these videos were "misrepresented to create panic" and were not of incidents in Maharashtra, but shot elsewhere. Some of these clippings were from places like Bengaluru, Syria and Karachi in Pakistan, he said. "These videos should not have been circulated. Whether these were morphed, edited or bogus, the clips created serious problems," Maharashtra's Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Bipin Bihari said. The body of a 12-year-old minor boy bearing strangulation marks was found here this morning, police said. Shivam was allegedly kidnapped from outside his house last evening and the body was found in a field under the Pharenda police station area, Superintendent of Police RP Singh said. A woman was arrested on suspicions of peddling drugs after 5 grams of heroin was found in her possession, police said today. The alleged peddler, identified as Sukhwinder Kaur, was arrested here yesterday and the heroin seized, they said, adding that two of her accomplices managed to escape. A case under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act was registered against Kaur, police said in a release here, and added that further investigation was underway.
