Pakistan's ousted premier Nawaz Sharif today denied ownership or any link with the purchase of properties in London as he recorded his statement before the accountability court here in a corruption case spiralling from the Panama Papers scandal. The Avenfield case is one of the three cases filed against Sharif, 68, and his family following the July 28 verdict of the Supreme Court, which had disqualified him and ordered institution of cases. Sharif, his daughter Maryam, sons Hassan and Hussain and son-in-law Muhammad Safdar are accused in the case that is based on allegation that the properties in London were bought in 1990s with the corruption money when Sharif twice served as premier. Authorities say a street shooting in the US city of Philadelphia has left a pregnant woman and her father critically injured on the day she was married. The shooting occurred shortly before 10:30 pm yesterday. Authorities say the shooters fired at least 18 shots from two separate semi-automatic weapons before they fled the scene on foot. Authorities say a 23-year-old woman, who is about five months pregnant with twins, was shot in the leg and hip. Her 74-year-old father was shot twice in the back. The Delhi High Court today sought the response of Delhi's Anti Corruption Branch (ACB) on the bail plea of a contractor, arrested in connection with a construction scam. Justice S P Garg asked the probe agency, ACB, to file its response on the bail application of Vinay Bansal, who was arrested on May 10, and listed the matter for further hearing on May 31. Bansal, the son of the late brother-in-law of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, is currently in judicial custody. The Delhi High Court today granted parole to Santosh Kumar Singh, who is serving life term for rape and murder of law student Priyadarshini Mattoo in 1996, to write his LLM examination. Justice Mukta Gupta granted him parole for four days, i.e. from today till May 24, as his exams are scheduled to begin from tomorrow. He is pursuing LLM in a second branch and he had completed first branch of LLM in 2014 and thereafter took admission in the second branch. A man allegedly killed his 30-year-old wife and later packed and sealed her body in a plastic bag and dumped it on the roadside here, police said today. Locals alerted police after noticing blood stains on the bag which was sealed using adhesive tape. Police said the deceased was identified as the wife of Hyder. Dabeerpura Police Station Inspector D Venkanna Naik said Hyder, who is employed in Dubai, came to the city a week ago. He visited his wife who was staying at her mother's house and both left two days ago. When both did not return till yesterday, her mother informed police, the inspector said. With the help of family members, the woman's body was identified and they accused Hyder of killing his wife, police said. Three brothers were sentenced to life imprisonment by a special SC/ST court in neighbouring Bundi district today for murdering a man after a quarrel over a minor issue in April 2016. Special judge Koshal Singh convicted Ashok Jinger (34), Arun Jinger (24) and Sonu alias Hempal Jinger (21), who are residents of Talera town, for the murder of Amerjeet Singh, special public prosecutor (SPP) Mahendra Sharma told reporters here. The court also slapped a fine of Rs one lakh each on them and ordered that Rs 3 lakh be paid as compensation to the victim's wife. Amerjeet Singh, 33, a resident of Talera town of Bundi district, was on April 24, 2016 murdered by the three brothers following a minor scuffle after his car hit the wooden bench outside the tea stall of their father in Talera town. A case was lodged in this connection in Talera police station. Statements of 17 witnesses were recorded during the trial and 21 documents were produced before the court, the SPP said.
The Delhi High Court today said there was "something fishy" about the manner in which the police were going about investigating the killing of an unidentified woman, whose body was found from the Shanti Van area here a week back. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar also said that the Delhi Police appeared to be protecting someone as it had sent the body for post mortem four days after the court had directed it to do so forthwith on May 16. The Bombay High Court has come to the aid of a 72-year-old city doctor and denied her son permission to enter her house after she alleged he regularly abused her. A bench presided over by Justice SJ Kathawalla refused to allow a plea filed by the woman's son seeking access to the house. "Prima facie, the plaintiff (the son) has no right over the house of the mother, and also can't claim any right or entry on the ground of dispossession, when the mother is seriously troubled over the problems created by him in the house," the bench said. The bench was hearing the plea filed by the Mumbai resident seeking that he, his wife and their child be granted access to his mother's house in South Mumbai. In the plea, he said he and his family used to stay with his mother, but she changed the locks of the house one day when they were out. The Supreme Court today decided to hear on Wednesday a plea by a suspected Indian Mujahideen (IM) member, who was deported from Saudi Arabia in 2012, challenging a Delhi High Court order denying him bail in a case relating to setting up of an alleged illegal arms factory here. A man allegedly shot dead his father and nephew in Hoshiarpur's Lamme village today over a land dispute, police said. The deceased were identified as Sulakhan Singh (84) and his grandson Harmit Singh (37). The accused, Balvir Singh, got into an argument with his father Sulakhan over a land dispute, following which he shot at the octogenarian and Harmit, police said. Balvir fired a few shots from his licensed .12 bore rifle, killing his father and nephew on the spot, they said. Balvir is absconding, the police said, adding that a case had been registered under section 302 (murder) of the IPC and sections 25, 27, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act.
A sessions court today dismissed the plea of a 16-year-old student, challenging the Juvenile Justice Board's (JJB) decision declaring him as an adult, in the murder case of a seven-year-old boy at a private school here.
