Illicit liquor kills 10 in Kanpur, 11 arrested

The Uttar Pradesh Police have arrested 11 people after an illicit liquor claimed lives of 10 people in Kanpur.The incident came to light yesterday morning after some of the consumers were found dead in their houses.Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma visited Ursula Hospital in Kanpur to meet six people who were hospitalised after consuming the illicit liquor.Sharma also gave Rs 50,000 each as compensation to the victims.Meanwhile, District Magistrate Surendra Singh has said, "We have raided the house of one of the accused from where cartons of illegal liquor have been found.

5 killed as car falls into gorge in HP

Five people, including a one-year-old girl were killed while 11 were injured when an overloaded car fell into a deep gorge near Jachhani curve on Bhuntar Manikaran road in Kullu district today, the police said. The driver of the car and two children were among injured people admitted to zonal hospital at Kullu. Four people died on the spot while one person succumbed to his injuries in the hospital, they said, adding the deceased have been identified as Bishan Dass (37), Vidya (40), Uttam Chand (63), Vikramu Devi (16) and Riya (1). The incident occurred as the driver lost control over the vehicle while negotiating a sharp curve, they said. The Deputy Commissioner and DSP of Kullu rushed to the spot and later visited the injured people at the hospital.

19-year-old arrested for molesting woman in Mumbai

A 19-year-old youth has been arrested for allegedly molesting a Delhi-based media professional in south Mumbai's Colaba area, a senior police official said today. The incident took place at midnight on Wednesday when the 25-year-old woman was returning to the hotel where she was staying, police said. The woman had lodged a complaint with Colaba police that a person on a bike had touched her inappropriately, while she was on her way to her hotel, and had sped away. Police today said that the youth, identified as Luv Kule, was tracked down yesterday night to his residence in Cuffe Parade, near Colaba, following which he was placed under arrest. An official said that Kule has told police that his motorcycle had slipped and this caused him to accidentally touch the complainant. "Kule has been booked under relevant sections of the IPC for molestation. Further investigations are underway," said Manoj Kumar Sharma, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone I.

Collegium system for appointment of judges a black spot on Indian democracy: Kushwaha

Union Minister Upendra Kushwaha today said the collegium system for selection of judges of high courts and the Supreme Court lacked transparency and was a "black spot" on Indian democracy, and called for more representation of people belonging to SC, ST, Dalit communities in the higher judiciary. According to the Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development, the appointments to the higher judiciary are done in "opaqueness" and not in a democratic manner. "The gates are closed for ST/ST and Dalits and even meritorious students who are willing to become judges. We want the gates to be opened," said the leader of the Bihar-based Rashtriya Lok Samata Party (RLSP), an ally of the BJP. Russian man masturbates sitting beside woman on board flight, held at Delhi airport

A Russian man was apprehended at the Delhi airport today after an Indian woman alleged that he had masturbated sitting beside her on board a flight from Istanbul, officials said. The security control room at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport was informed in the early hours today that there was an "unruly passenger" on board a Turkish airline flight approaching Delhi. Personnel of the CISF, which guards the airport, reached the flight (TK-716) upon landing and were informed that the Indian woman had, in the meantime, made a distress call to the Delhi Police alleging sexual harassment by a co-passenger. "It was learnt that the male passenger, a Russian, was sitting next to the woman in the flight and allegedly unzipped his trouser and started masturbating in front of her," a senior official said. Six children drown in two separate incidents

The bodies of six minor children, including four girls, have been fished out from water-filled ditches in separate incidents in Samastipur and Katihar districts of Bihar, police said today. In the first incident, three children including a girl drowned in a water-filled ditch at Koluara village in Samastipur district today, police said. Kalyanpur police station SHO Madhurendra Kishore said that the deceased have been identified as Muskan Kumari (10), Rakesh Kumar (9) and Amit Kumar (7). The bodies have been sent to Sadar hospital for post-mortem, the SHO said. Senior BJP leader and former minister Lal Singh today led a massive rally from Lakhanpur to Hiranagar in Kathua district to press for a CBI probe into the rape and murder case of an eight-year-old girl in January. Brother-sister duo killed in road accident in JK's Rajouri'

A brother-sister duo were today killed when their car skidded off the road and fell into a deep gorge in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir, the police said. Raja Anzar (19) and his elder sister Rukhsana Kousar (21), residents of Nadiandhar, were travelling from Darhal to Rajouri in their car when it fell into the gorge near Chatyar village, a police official said. He said the bodies could be pulled out of the mangled car after hours-long hectic efforts. The bodies were handed over to their family for last rites after completion of legal formalities.

Brazilian woman, with 106 cocaine-filled capsules concealed in her body, held

A 25-year-old Brazilian woman has been arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) from the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport here for allegedly smuggling cocaine in 106 self-swalloed capsules, officials said today. The woman was apprehended by the NCB sleuths on May 14, upon her arrival from Sao Paulo in Brazil, based on an intelligence input. She was subsequently taken to the Safdarjung hospital, where an x-ray confirmed that there were cocaine-filled capsules in her body, the officials said. A total of 106 capsules, containing 930 grams of pure South American cocaine, were recovered from the woman, they added. She was placed under arrest yesterday under sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and remanded to judicial custody by a court. "She got the consignment from the South American drug mafia and was supposed to deliver it to African drug traffickers active in the National Capital Region," a senior NCB official said.

Terror group KLF killed 2 Shiv Sena leaders in Punjab: NIA

Two charge sheets have been filed against 15 people in connection with the killings of Shiv Sena's Punjab-based leaders Satpal Sharma and Durga Prasad Gupta by operatives of terror group Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF), the NIA said today. The charge sheets were filed in a special court in Mohali yesterday in under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the Arms Act, the National Investigation Agency said. Sharma and his son Kumar, who were followers of Dera Sacha Sauda, were killed on February 25 last year at 'Naam Charcha Ghar' in Jageda area in Ludhiana, while Gupta was shot dead on April 23, 2016 in Khanna, also in Ludhiana. The NIA said during investigation it was found that killings of Sharma, his son and Gupta were part of a trans-national conspiracy hatched by the senior leadership of the KLF. Indian national arrested at Sri Lanka airport for smuggling gold

An Indian national has been arrested by Sri Lankan custom officials at the international airport here for allegedly attempting to smuggle into the country 4 kilograms of gold biscuits valued at around Rs 40 million. The suspect, who had arrived at Bandaranaike International Airport from Chennai, aroused the suspicions of custom officers at the airport. Upon inspection the officers found forty 100 grams gold biscuits concealed in his trouser pockets, the Colombo Page reported today. Twin baby case: Delhi Police seeks legal opinion after DMC rules out hospital's negligence

The Delhi Police is seeking legal opinion in a case in which a newborn was allegedly wrongly declared dead by the Max Hospital in Shalimar Bagh, after the Delhi Medical Council (DMC) gave a clean chit to the hospital and ruled out any medical negligence on its part. In its report to the Delhi Police's Crime Branch, which is probing the matter, while the DMC said were "procedural lapses and inadequate documentation", but "no medical negligence can be attributed on the part of doctors". A senior officer, privy to the probe, said they were studying the report to ascertain the future course of action. "We are talking to some legal experts and experienced police officers to ensure that the case gets a logical conclusion. Man, his mother arrested for torturing wife in Guj's Ahmedabad

A man, along with his mother, was today arrested for allegedly subjecting his wife to physical and mental torture, police said. A video of the victim being beaten by the accused, Tushar Trivedi and his mother Chanda, went viral on social media. The video footage shows the victim, along with a four-year-old child, emerging from their house, after an argument with Chanda, and then getting assaulted by her husband. 7-yr-old boy mauled to death by stray dogs in Punjab

A seven-year-old boy was killed by a pack of stray dogs at Mheas Bir near Nabha here, police said today. The boy, Manish, was rushed to PGIMER in Chandigarh where he died due to excessive bleeding, they said. The incident took place last afternoon when the boy went to a nearby plantation to pluck some mangoes, while his father, Babu Ram, was resting at a brick kiln after eating lunch, police said. Manish was attacked and dragged by the pack of dogs, before mauling him, they said. Police said a passerby noticed the boy being attacked by dogs and he tried to save him. Three persons were arrested with over 100 kg of opium worth crores of rupees from Bagru area of this district, the police said today. Following a tip off, a police team intercepted a car late last night and recovered the opium kept in three sacks, DCP (West) Ashok Kumar Gupta said. The accused had brought the opium from Jharkhand and were on their way to supply it in different parts of Jodhpur. Man arrested for allegedly raping a minor girl

A 52-year-old man was arrested by Thane Police today for allegedly abducting an 11-year-old girl, his neighbour, from her house and raping her. A case of rape and abduction under the IPC and under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act was registered against him, said police PRO Sukhada Narkar. Identity of the accused, a resident of Mumbra township, was not disclosed. According to police, the accused entered the victim's house in the wee hours yesterday and lifted her while she and her siblings were asleep. Kashmiri woman assault case: DMC seeks report from police, RWA

The Delhi Minorities Commission (DMC) has issued notices to the police and a resident welfare association (RWA) here, seeking reports about the alleged assault on a Kashmiri woman and her relatives earlier this month. The commission's chairman, Zafarul Islam Khan, said notices have been issued in the recent incident in southeast Delhi's Siddhartha Extension to the police and the locality's RWA. On May 10 night, the victims, including four women, were allegedly surrounded and roughed up by a mob of around 30 to 40 people.
