A 52-year-old police constable, who was seriously injured in an accident while accompanying a vehicle theft suspect to police station, died this morning, police said. Sunil Dattatray Kadam, the constable, was riding pillion with Sirajuddin Shaikh (26) on May 11 when Shaikh's motorbike crashed into a roadside bench on Pedder Road in south Mumbai. Since then Kadam was battling for life at Bombay Hospital. In the wee hours of May 11, when Kadam was on a vehicle checking duty at Cadbury Junction on Pedder Road, he and his colleagues stopped three men on a motorbike. A digit was missing from the two-wheeler's number plate. When asked about the number plate, Sirajuddin Shaikh, who was riding the motorbike, could not give any explanation. Nor did he have driving licence and the vehicle documents. While Shaikh's two friends fled, Kadam, suspecting that it was a stolen motorbike, asked Shaikh to ride to Gamdevi police station with him. Two resident doctors including a woman were allegedly beaten up by a patient's relatives at the state-run J J Hospital this morning, police said. While police registered a case against five persons and arrested four of them, the incident prompted the resident doctors at the hospital to go on a day-long strike. The incident took place in the morning when Zaida Sanaullah Sheikh (45), a resident of Mumbra who was being treated for a gall bladder ailment, died. Her family members alleged that it was due to negligence on the doctors' part, and beat up Dr Atish Parikh and a woman doctor who were on duty, a police official said. Highly decomposed bodies of a woman and a child, as yet unidentified, were found stuffed in a bag in Dindoli area here today, police said. "A bag containing two highly decomposed bodies was found near a sugarcane field in Dindoli locality on a road that leads to Eklera village. The bodies have been sent for post mortem," a Dindoli police station official said. The development comes a few months after the bodies of a woman and her daughter were found from different localities in the city. The girl's body had over 80 injury marks and police investigations later revealed that she had been raped and murdered.

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Bihar police arrested a station house officer (SHO) today for his alleged involvement in the illegal liquor business in the state. There is a ban on liquor in Bihar. The SIT arrested Pankaj Kumar, the SHO of Chandauti police station, for his alleged nexus with the liquor mafia and patronising the illegal liquor trade in the area. The police also recovered Rs 1.16 lakh from Kumar's official residence during a search, Inspector General of Police N H Khan said. Khan added that he had received reports of the alleged involvement of police personnel in the illegal liquor business in Gaya and asked the senior superintendent of police of the district to verify the same. The illegal manufacture and sale of liquor was found to be thriving at Gannu Bigaha and adjoining areas, which fall within the Chandauti police station limits, and the SHO was placed under arrest, the police said. Kumar was produced before a court, which sent him to jail.
A court here today summoned Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) president Lalu Prasad, who is serving sentences in three fodder scam cases in a Ranchi jail and is out on a six-week provisional bail on medical grounds, in connection with a defamation case. Sub-judge Om Prakash passed the order, taking cognizance of a complaint lodged by a member of the Bihar Disaster Management Authority, Udaykant Mishra, who has accused the RJD chief of making disparaging remarks about his friendship with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. A 58-year-old man was today arrested for allegedly raping a minor girl in Aji Dam area here, police said. Police said that Sudama Chaudhary, a native of Uttar Pradesh, was caught by the victim's mother while he was allegedly raping the victim in his room yesterday. "A complaint was filed following which we arrested Chaudhary today. He has been charged with rape under relevant sections of the IPC and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act," said Inspector P B Shapra of Aji Dam police station. A 22-year-old man was today arrested for allegedly raping a minor girl in Madhya Pradesh's Damoh district, police said. "The incident happened in Patharia village yesterday. The accused, Bhajanlal aka Guttai, lured the 8-year-old girl to a farm nearby and raped her. He threatened to chop off her hands if she revealed the incident to anyone," said Patharia's Sub Divisional Police Officer, Lajjashankar Mishra. He said that the victim's family found her crying in the farm. "After she narrated her ordeal to her family, a complaint was filed and the accused was arrested today," he informed.
In a relief to a single mother struggling to get an error in her child's birth record rectified, the Madras High Court has ordered the deletion of the existing name in the father's name column of the certificate. Allowing the petition filed by Mathumitha Ramesh, Justice M S Ramesh directed the Tiruchirapalli Corporation to remove within a week the name of Manish Madanpal Meena entered in the birth certificate. The judge then posted the matter to June 11 to report compliance. The petitioner's problems began after she gave birth to a child through intrauterine fertility treatment with the help of a sperm donor. After the birth, the corporation issued a birth certificate which showed the father's name as Manish Madanpal Meena, her friend. A 38-year-old woman and her two minor daughters died after they accidently slipped into a water tank in the district today, police said. The incident occurred in the Khajuwala area where the woman was fetching water from the tank and she fell into it, they said. A medical officer was today arrested for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 15,000 from a woman colleague to facilitate her transfer, Anti-Corruption Bureau officials said. "Dr Anil Waghmare (45) was arrested after he accepted Rs 15,000 during a trap laid by the ACB at Shri Hospital in Ambad tehsil in the district," informed ACB inspector Ajinath Kashid. The official said that Waghmare had demanded Rs 15,000 as bribe from a woman who wanted a transfer from the Sukhapuri health sub-centre to Dehipuri health centre. The trap was laid after the woman approached the ACB, he said. He said that a case had been registered and further investigations were underway.
The Rajasthan anti-corruption bureau today arrested a police head constable for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 for removing the names of three accused from an FIR in Alwar district of Rajasthan. The accused head constable, Gambhir Singh, posted with the Ramgarh police station, had allegedly demanded the bribe from one Iliyas Mev to remove the names of three accused from a case lodged with the police station, said Anti Corruption Branch inspector, Alwar, I Mahendra Kumar. After the verification of the complaint, a trap was laid and the accused was caught while taking the bribe. The accused has been arrested under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
Former diplomat Madhuri Gupta, who had served at the Indian High Commission in Islamabad, was today sentenced to three years in jail for passing on sensitive information to Pakistan's ISI, with a Delhi court saying her actions caused a "severe security threat". Additional Sessions Judge Sidharth Sharma gave her the maximum sentence for the offences of spying and wrongful communication of information protected under the law, observing that an educated woman like her did not deserve any leniency. Sixty-one-year-old Gupta, who was the Second Secretary (Press & Information) at the high commission from 2007 till her arrest on April 22, 2010 during a visit here, was held guilty yesterday under various provisions of the Official Secrets (OS) Act.
