Man found dead in Bandipora

A 23-year-old man, who was allegedly abducted, was found dead in an orchard in Bandipora district of Jammu and Kashmir today, police said. Hilal Ahmad Parray, a painter by occupation, was found dead inside an orchard at Hajin in Bandipora this morning by the local residents, the police said. The police said that Parray was reportedly abducted from near his house last night. Preliminary investigations suggest that the man was strangled to death, he said.

Woman kills paramour; 6 arrested in Jammu

A woman allegedly killed her paramour with the help of her sons and their friends in Jammu and Kashmir's Samba district due to strong opposition from her family for her illicit relationship with him for the past six years, police said today. Six people, including the woman, were arrested, they said. On May 12, a written complaint was filed by one Gurbachan Singh of Makhanpur Charkan of Tehsil Bishnah in Jammu district about missing of his tenant named Raj Kumar of Chhattisgarh, a police official said. A case was registered at Bari Brahmana police station and taking cognisance into the matter, Anil Magotra, KPS, senior superintendent of Samba police constituted a special team led by Inspector Mahesh Sharma, to investigate the matter. Former Mizo CM files defamation case against Cong mouthpiece

Opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) president Zoramthanga today filed a criminal defamation case against the state's Congress mouthpiece for allegedly linking him in the murder case of a Presbyterian priest in 2007 when he was the chief minister. Zoramthanga filed the case against the editor and publisher of the 'Congress Thlifim' in the court of the Judicial Magistrate First Class H Lalduhsanga in Aizawl. The MNF chief alleged in his petition that an article of the 'Congress Thlifim' in its March 2018 issue quoted a resident of Aizawl who accused Zoramthanga of ordering assassination of the priest who was killed on October one, 2007. Zoramthanga who was chief minister for two terms between December 4, 1998 and December 9, 2008 said the article has defamed him.

HC restrains Tamil mag from publishing articles on Kanimozhi's pvt life without her consent

The Madras High Court has restrained a Tamil bi-weekly magazine from publishing articles on the "private life" of DMK Rajya Sabha member Kanimozhi, daughter of former chief minister M Karunanidhi, without her consent or response. Justice R Subramanian, however, made it clear that the restriction is not extended to her functions as MP or as a leader of a political party. The judge dismissed a petition filed by Varadarajan, director and publisher of Kumudham group of magazines, for vacating the court's earlier injunction . "The magazine shall not publish anything regarding the private life of Kanimozhi, her family, her marriage, procreation, motherhood, child bearing and education without her consent. TN priest arrested for using cobras, elephant for puja

A priest, who used cobras for a special puja on the 80th birthday of his father, was arrested for violation of wildlife laws, a forest official said today. Sundaresan, the 45-year old priest, also brought in an elephant unauthorisedly for prayers seeking longevity for his father. The arrest was made after a video clip of the priest chanting shlokas and offering flower petals to cobras in the presence of a snake charmer went viral in social media. "Using cobras for any purpose, be it ritual or otherwise is in violation of the Wild Life Protection Act," a top district forest official told PTI. Asked if the reptiles were harmed or harassed, he said using cobras for puja amounted to harassing and teasing them. Bacha Khan University attack: Pak SC suspends death sentence of mastermind

The Pakistan Supreme Court on Thursday suspended the death sentence of Bacha Khan University attack's mastermind, Akbar Ali, in connection with the 2016 Bacha Khan University attack, which claimed 22 lives.A two-judge bench headed by Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed in the Pakistan top court summoned the complete record of the case from the military court. J&K Guv clears ordinance advocating death for rape of girls below 12

In a bid to curb violence against women, Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra today approved two ordinances, one of which advocates the death penalty for those convicted of raping a girl below 12 years of age. The Jammu and Kashmir Protection of Children from Sexual Violence Ordinance, 2018, and the Jammu and Kashmir Criminal Law (Amendment) Ordinance, 2018, were promulgated by Vohra and come into effect from today, an official spokesperson said. In view of the surge in violence against women in general and sexual violence in particular in various parts of the country, including J&K, a need was felt to carry out certain amendments to Criminal Laws in the state on the analogy of the amendments made in the Central Criminal Law in 2018, the official said. SC adjourns Ayodhya land dispute case

Police have registered an FIR here against former chief minister Virbhadra Singh, his son Vikramaditya Singh and four others on a complaint of his nephew alleging that they had trespassed a property owned by him. Ten children found living in squalid conditions in a California home were waterboarded, shot at with crossbows and had scalding water poured over them by their mother and her partner, authorities said. The abuse was detailed in a motion filed by prosecutors to increase the bail of the children's mother, 30-year-old Ina Rogers, who was ordered taken into custody and whose bail was set at $495,000. Two held with ganja worth Rs 33.4 lakh

The Anti Narcotics Cell of Mumbai Police have arrested two persons including a woman and seized ganja (cannabis) worth Rs 33.40 lakh, an official said today. Acting on a tip-off, ANC sleuths laid a trap on the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR) and arrested Tausif Rafiq Khan (19) and Parveen Kasim Ali Jafari (40) yesterday, he said. Some 167 kg of ganja was seized from their car, he said. Khan and Jafari, who are related, are residents of Nalasopara and suburban Sakinaka, respectively. They had allegedly brought the ganja from Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh for supplying to drug peddlers in JVLR area, said deputy commissioner of police Shivdeep Lande. The investigators were looking for a woman who is suspected to be the kingpin of the drug racket, he said. Four get life term in cleric killing case

A court here sentenced four members of a family, including two brothers, to life imprisonment in connection with the killing of a cleric in 2012. Additional District and Sessions Judge Ravinder kumar has also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 each on the accused Mumtyaz, his brother Idrees, and two others - Mustakim and Saleem - after holding them guilty under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code, according to the court order. A cleric, Maulvi Irfan, was shot dead when he was going to the fields near Tawli village under Shahpur police station in the district on October 19, 2012. Past enmity was stated as the motive behind the murder.

Man who settled in US using fake passport held in MP

A 55-year-old man, who had allegedly obtained a fake passport to gain entry into America in the 1990s and later settled in that country, was arrested here today, a police official said. The accused, Aamir Ali Khairani, who came to India on April 24, was arrested following a tip-off, police said. "Khairani, who hails from Indore, had obtained a fake passport from Hyderabad through an agent using forged documents in the name of Rajesh Agrawal," Amarendar Singh, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Indore Crime Branch, told reporters. "On the basis of that fake passport, he entered America in the 1990s to work in Texas, where he later settled down," he added. Man kills wife with axe as she wanted to visit her parents

A 45-year-old woman was allegedly axed to death by her husband while she was asleep at her room along with her two daughters in Kherkheda village in Rajasthan's Jhalawar district, police said today. The accused husband identified as Chain Singh (48) fled away from the spot after killing Guddi Kanwar Rajput last night, they said. Primary inquiry into the matter revealed that the couple had a scuffle yesterday noon when the deceased woman insisted on going to her parents' home, but the husband did not gave her the permission, SHO at Asnawar police station Islam Ali said, adding the family, however, went to bed peacefully after the meal last night. Murder over inter-faith marriage: CBI court finds 2 guilty, acquits 3

Seventeen years after a Hindu man was murdered allegedly for marrying a Muslim, a CBI court here today found two persons guilty in the case but acquitted three others. Balakrishnan was murdered on September 18, 2001 near the Chandragiri Bridge in Kasaragod. First accused Mohammed Iqbal alias Ikku and second accused Mohammed Hanifa alias Jackie Hanif were found guilty under various IPC sections including 302 (murder) and 120B (criminal conspiracy). Special CBI Court Judge S Santhosh Kumar acquitted M Abdul Gafoor, A M Muhammad and Aboobacker Haji as charges against them could not be proved. The court will pronounce the quantum of punishment tomorrow. The court cancelled the convicts' bail and sent them to Ernakulam sub-jail. There were six accused in the case but one later turned approver. Balakrishnan, who was in love with the Musli woman, had married her in June 2001. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday arrested a Deputy General Manager of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), Assam's Sivasagar city for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs two lakh from a man for passing his pending bills.The accused, who was booked under section 7 of the IPC Act, 1988, was produced before the Special Judge for CBI cases in Guwahati."A case has been registered under section 7 of the IPC Act, 1988 on a complaint alleging that the accused was demanding a bribe of Rs. two lakh for passing pending bills of the complainant," a CBI official said.Searches were also conducted at the residential and official premises of the accused.

The Jammu and Kashmir Governor N.N. Vohra on Thursday promulgated the Jammu and Kashmir Criminal Law (Amendment) Ordinance, 2018 and the Jammu and Kashmir Protection of Children from Sexual Violence Ordinance, 2018.In view of the surge in sexual violence against women in various parts of the country, including Jammu and Kashmir, the need was felt to carry out certain amendments in the Criminal Laws (the Ranbir Penal Code, Samvat, 1989; the Code of Criminal Procedure, Samvat, 1989; and the Evidence Act, Samvat, 1977) on the analogy of the amendments made in the Central Criminal Law in 2018.The Jammu and Kashmir Criminal Law (Amendment) Ordinance, 2018 seeks to amend the above laws.As per the new law, raping a woman under sixteen years of age has been made punishable with rigorous imprisonment for twenty years and may extend to a life sentence, which shall mean the remainder of that person's natural life.While raping a woman under twelve years of age has been made punishable with death .
