: The Madras High Court today ordered tagging of two PILs opposing construction of memorial for late chief minister Jayalalithaa with related petitions pending before the court. Vacation bench comprising Justices R Subramanian and M Dhandapani posted to June 6 the PILs -- one filed by social activist 'Traffic' K Ramaswamy and another by S Jayaseelan, a city advocate. Ramaswamy challenged construction of the memorial while Jayaseelan also sought a direction to the authorities to remove the mortal remains of Jayalalithaa from the burial spot on the Marina beachfront. The state government had on May 7 laid the foundation for building the Rs 50.8-crore memorial. A speech therapist was arrested in the city for allegedly beating up a patient, a minor boy, while treating him, police said today. The boy of little more than 2 years was allegedly beaten up by the therapist following which he received injuries on his head and back at her clinic on Anwar Shah Road on Monday, a Kolkata Police official said. "We have arrested the therapist yesterday after going through the CCTV footages of her clinic," the officer said. Following the assault on the child, his parents had taken him to a hospital that released him after treating his wounds. The boy's parents then lodged an FIR against the woman at the Charu Market Police station, the investigating officer said. She was arrested under provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act a local court today remanded her to judicial custody till May 19, he added. "Our child is under severe trauma. The CBI today arrested two sub-inspectors of the Uttar Pradesh Police in connection with the reported death of the father of a minor girl, who was allegedly raped by BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Senger at Unnao, in judicial custody. Sub Inspector Ashok Singh Bhadauriya, the then Station Officer and Sub Inspector Kamta Prasad Singh--both of Police Station Makhi in Unnao district have been arrested in the case, officials said. The Odisha State Bar Council today announced that the rule as pronounced by the Supreme Court will be implemented in all the 167 bars of the state, including that of the High Court. The announcement comes at a time when a writ petition seeking introduction of 'one bar, one vote' rule for all lawyers in different bars is pending disposal in Orissa High Court. The Odisha State Bar Council Chairman Chinmay Mohanty said the 'one bar, one vote' rule is part of a guideline set by the Supreme Court in 2015 to identify the number of genuine advocates practising in different courts of the country. Though the rule allows multiple memberships of different bars, it gives only one voting right to an advocate, Mohanty said. "All the bar associations of the state will be provided with their respective voters' list indicating the individual advocate's choice of bar to participate in the annual elections to form its executive body," he said. The Bombay High Court today granted bail to two accused in the Kamala Mills fire case. Justice V L Achilya had reserved the order after hearing extensive arguments yesterday. Ramesh Gowani and Ravi Bhandari, co-owners of the Kamala Mills compound in central Mumbai, were arrested and charged with 'culpable homicide not amounting to murder' under section 304 of the IPC after 14 people died in a fire at two roof-top restaurants in the compound on December 29 last year. The two had sought bail on the ground that they were not aware of violation of fire safety rules or other illegalities at '1 Above' and Mojo's Bistro pubs, where the tragedy occurred. Special public prosecutor Prakash Shetty had opposed the bail pleas, saying they knew about the illegal structural changes made at the two pubs.
The Bangladesh Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld the bail order of former Prime Minister and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia in connection with the ongoing Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case.According to lawyers, the bail does not allow Khaleda to walk free soon, as she is embroiled in other graft cases.BNP lawyer Moudud Ahmed was quoted by bdnews24 as saying, "We have to try to seek bail in other cases for that. The Supreme Court today sought the Centre's response on a PIL which sought a CBI probe into incidents of violence during the April 2 'Bharat bandh', which was called in protest against dilution of the SC/ST Act by some groups and organisations. A 32-year-old man who allegedly 'purchased' stolen cars from Delhi and neighbouring areas and later sold them after changing their chassis numbers has been arrested, police said today. The accused, Jishan Qureshi alias Pawaa, had sold or dismantled one thousands cars in the last three years, they said. Alok Kumar, joint commissioner of police (Crime), said Quershi was arrested from Dwarka on Monday. Qureshi was allegedly involved in 25 criminal cases of auto-theft and tampering of engine and chassis numbers of vehicles in Delhi, Meerut, Gurugram, Noida and Ghaziabad, and was declared a proclaimed offender by different courts in four cases of Gurugram, Noida and Ghaziabad. "Qureshi used to purchase stolen cars from several auto-lifter gangs active in Delhi and thousands of stolen cars were either dismantled by him or sold to another notorious receiver of Meerut, after keeping his commission, who used to further supply them in other parts of India," a police official said.
The Allahabad High Courttoday granted bail to three junior engineers of the Noida authority, who were accused of fraud along with suspended chief engineer Yadav Singh. The bench comprising Justice Ramesh Sinha and Justice DK Singh- l granted bail to the three junior engineers, identified as Rajesh Kumar Sharma, Ram Dutt Sharma and Sushil Kumar Agarwal. However, the bench rejected the bail application of the managing director of Tripti Construction Private Limited, Vinod Kumar Goyal, one of the accused in the case. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had investigated the matter and submitted a charge sheet against these three junior engineers. Criminal cases were registered against Singh and others on July 30, 2015 under sections 109 read with 120-B IPC (conspiracy) and 13 (2) and 13 (1) (e) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 registered with CBI, New Delhi.
A nine-year-old girl was raped allegedly by her neighbour in northwest Delhi's Swaroop Nagar, following which the accused was arrested, police said today. The incident was reported yesterday to the police. The girl, who does not talk much, had gone to play outside but did not return home, they said. Her family started looking for her and later two men brought her home. The girl's clothes were wet and when her mother changed her clothes, she saw that she was bleeding from her private parts, police said. The girl informed her ordeal with the help of gestures. During investigation, police learnt that a neighbour was missing. He was later arrested, they said. He had taken the girl to an isolated spot and allegedly raped her. Later, he had threatened her of dire consequences. The girl is currently undergoing treatment and is also being counselled.

The agreement with attorneys representing 332 survivors was a "global settlement," Michigan State University said, and resolved claims against individuals that were employed by the faculty and implicated in the wide-ranging scandal. It did not resolve claims against USA Gymnastics, the US Olympic Committee, star gymnastics coaches Bela and Marta Karolyi, and others. Neither did it end a criminal probe of the university's actions with regard to Nassar's behavior. Prohibitory orders were imposed in the district by the administration ahead of festivals and competitive exams to maintain law and order, an official said. "The orders were promulgated owing to forthcoming festivals and an all India examination," District Magistrate Sarvagya Ram Mishra said. The Supreme Court today said it would be open to appoint any suitable former judge of a high court in a tribunal or commission till any legislative amendment in this regard was brought, so that such bodies "may not remain headless". The apex court also said that a committee could be set up in two months by the Centre to consider issues, including creation of a regular cadre and laying down eligibility for recruitment for tribunals. "We further direct that wherever qualification required for appointment to a tribunal/commission is of a former Chief Justice or a former Supreme Court judge, and no suitable person of that category is available, it will be open to make appointment of any suitable former judge of a high court till any legislative amendment in that regard is brought out so that a tribunal/commission may not remain headless," a bench comprising Justices Adarsh Kumar Goel and Indu Malhotra said. The Supreme Court Collegium met today to deliberate on several issues, including reconsidering the name of Uttarakhand Chief Justice K M Joseph for elevation to the top court after it was returned by the Centre. Details on the outcome of the meeting, which is understood to have gone on for over an hour, are awaited. This was the Collegium's second meeting in five days. At its last meeting on May 11, the Collegium had agreed in principle to reiterate its recommendation for elevating Justice Joseph as a judge of the apex court, almost three weeks after it was returned by the Centre. It had then adopted a resolution which stated that there was need for further discussion on the issue of sending the other names to the Centre and had decided to meet again today. The Collegium comprises Chief Justice Dipak Misra and five senior most judges Justices J Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, M B Lokur and Kurian Joseph. Goa minister Vijai Sardesai today said the activists who have made allegations against him in the alleged land conversion scam are aping Arvind Kejriwal. Like the Delhi chief minister, they are making allegations without giving evidence, and will apologise later, he said. Hundreds of people held a protest rally here last month demanding scrapping of the Regional Plan 2021 of Goa. The protesters alleged that several politicians including Sardesai, who is the minister for town planning, benefited from the plan, and illegally converted their 'orchard lands' into 'settlement zones' (where construction is allowed). The Delhi Police has arrested a 53-year-old man for allegedly duping an investor of Rs 1.25 crore on the pretext of providing exciting opportunities to purchase properties, police said today. The accused, Pankaj Dayal, was arrested on Monday and was produced before a court the next day and was sent to judicial custody, they added. Dayal was arrested from Nehru Place in connection with a cheating case of 2014, they said. He had opened a company in the name of Realtech Constructions and he used to lure investors by telling them that they could make money money by investing in property and would take money from them, police said. Later, he would keep delaying the project' for some reason or the other and used to abscond later, police said.
