The lawyers were in agreement with their former colleague, who became the first woman advocate to be appointed as a Supreme Court judge directly from the bar, that the dresses worn by the advocates shall be sober and dignified, as recommended by the Bar Council Of India (BCI) Rules. A six-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a ward attendant of Thane Civil Hospital here, police said today. The incident took place yesterday afternoon on the premises of the hospital and the accused, Harish Narwar (52), was arrested last night, police said. According to police, the girl was at the hospital as her mother had delivered a baby two days back. "The accused lured the minor to an isolated place in the hospital and sexually assaulted her there. The victim later told her father about the incident after which a complaint was filed and Narwar was arrested," a police officer said. The accused has been booked under IPC section 376 (rape) and under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.
The Delhi High Court today rejected the plea of Vikas Yadav, in jail for life for the murder of Nitish Katara, to be present in person during the hearing of his plea seeking furlough. Justice S P Garg denied the relief sought by Vikas saying there was no need for him to be present during hearing of his petition. Furlough is a right of a prison inmate to have leave for a certain period of time in a year when he can come out of jail. It is counted towards the total period of his sentence. The prison authorities may deny the relief in certain cases. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) today said it has issued notice to the Uttar Pradesh government over two sisters, bother minor, being sent to a jail instead of a juvenile home in a case of alleged cow slaughter. The NHRC has taken suo motu cognisance of a media report that in a case of alleged cow slaughter, the police sent the two girls, aged about 12 and 16 years, to the jail in Khatauli in district Muzaffarnagar, instead of sending them to juvenile home, as required by the law, despite they producing their Aadhaar cards as proof of their age. The police officers preferred to go by their physical appearances instead of believing their Aadhaar cards which were shown to them as proof of their age, the NHRC said in a statement. A Delhi court today decided to hear on July 30 the CBI's plea seeking a direction to allow it to go for further probe into the politically sensitive Rs 64-crore Bofors payoff case. The matter came up before Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ashu Garg, who fixed it for hearing after the summer vacation, noting the submission of BJP leader and advocate Ajay Agrawal that he would file an application in the apex court for transfer of the original case records to Tis Hazari court. The court was told that the original records file pertaining to the case was with the Supreme Court. A man was arrested for allegedly raping his 10-year-old daughter, a senior police official said today. Superintendent of Police (SP) S N Tiwari said that the incident occurred on Thursday night when the victim and her younger brother were asleep in their room. The victim's mother was working outside, Tiwari said, and the accused took the girl to his room and raped her. "Later, the girl shared her ordeal with her mother, who subsequently registered a complaint with the City Kotwali police station yesterday afternoon," he said. The accused was arrested on the charge of rape under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, he said. The victim's medical examination report is awaited, the SP said.
The Supreme Court today extended the tenure of the president and other members of the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC), till their successors are appointed to ensure smooth judicial functioning of the apex consumer disputes body. The apex court had on December 11 last year extended till March 15 the tenure of the NCDRC members and later modified the order and extended it to May 31. The Centre had consented to the extensions on the ground that judicial work should not get affected. A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud passed the order today after senior lawyer Siddharth Luthra submitted that either appointments be made in the NCDCR or the tenure of existing members and the president be extended till their successors were appointed. Police today arrested three persons and seized 50 kg of opium from them near Umedpur area in Haryana's Sirsa district. The accused were allegedly trying to smuggle the opium in a car which was intercepted by the police at a checkpost in Umedpur. "After spotting the police, the accused tried to make a U-turn. The police team chased the car and nabbed the three accused while two managed to escape," a police official said. "On searching the vehicle, the police found 50 kg opium that was being smuggled by them," the official said. The accused have been identified as Sukhram, a native of Churu in Rajasthan, Krishan alias Kalia of Taranagar, and Satbir of Ellenabad, police said. A case has been registered against the accused at Ellenabad police station under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, the official said.
The Supreme Court today dismissed a plea seeking an independent probe into the alleged "mysterious" death of veteran Bollywood star Sridevi at a Dubai hotel on February 24 this year. A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra did not accept the submission of senior advocate Vikas Singh that the Delhi High Court was wrong in dismissing the plea and holding that the authorities in Dubai have already looked into the incident. A year after it was handed over the probe, the CBI today told the Delhi High Court that the disappearance of JNU student Najeeb Ahmed was only a "missing" person case as of now as it has "not found any evidence" to show that any crime was committed. The agency, which took over the case on May 16 last year, also told the high court that presently it does not have "an iota of evidence" to arrest or take any coercive action against the nine students who are suspects in the case of disappearance of Ahmed. The Jharkhand High Court today granted six-week provisional bail to former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad on medical ground after hearing all the three fodder scam cases in which he is convicted. A third year nursing student of a private hospital here allegedly committed suicide in the hospital premises leading to protests by her classmates and family members and alleged assault of police personnel who had tried to stop them, a senior police officer said today. Journalists of an electronic media house were allegedly assaulted by the private guards of the hospital when they went to cover the incident, he said adding that police were looking into the matter. The nursing student was found hanging from the ceiling of a room at the hospital's hostel late last night following which there was huge protests by classmates and her family members who held the hospital authorities responsible for her death and demanded action against it, a senior officer of Jadavpur police station said.
