IT Dept files complaints against Karti and kin under black money act

The Income Tax Department on Friday filed prosecution complaints under the Black Money (Undisclosed Foreign Income and Assets) and Imposition of Tax Act, 2015 against Karti Chidambaram, his mother, Nalini Chidambaram and wife, Srinidhi Chidambaram.The prosecution case filed under section 50 of the Black Money Act at a Chennai court, alleged that the trio made investments in foreign assets which were not disclosed fully or partly in their returns.The accused purchased an immovable property worth Rs 5.37 crore in Cambridge, United Kingdom, but the same was not disclosed in their Income Tax Return.Karti Chidambaram also invested Rs 3.28 crore in Nanoholdings LLC in USA and Rs 80 Lakh in Totus Tennis Ltd through his domestic company, Chess Global Advisory Services private limited.The IT Department had recently issued notices against Karti and his family members under Section 10(1) of the Black Money Act, which was challenged by him in the Madras High Court.The court later dismissed his ...

IT dept files charge sheets against

The Income Tax department today filed four charge sheets against former Union finance minister P Chidambaram's wife Nalini, son Karti and daughter-in-law Srinidhi under the Black Money Act for allegedly not disclosing their foreign assets. The charge sheets or prosecution complaints have been filed by the department before a special court in Chennai under Section 50 of theBlack Money (Undisclosed Foreign Income and Assets) and Imposition of Tax Act, 2015, officials said. Nalini Chidambaram, Karti and Srinidhi have been charged for allegedly not disclosing, either partly or fully, immovable assets like the one at Cambridge in the UK worth Rs 5.37 crore, property worth Rs 80 lakh in the same country and asset worth Rs 3.28 crore in the US, they said. The charge sheets claimed that the Chidambarams "did not disclose" these investments to the tax authority as also by the firm co-owned by Karti-- Chess Global Advisory, in violation of the black money law. Kerela girl files case against NEET invigilator for staring 'Inappropriately'

A Kerala student, who was forced to remove her innerwear while appearing for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) exam in Lions school at Koppam in Palakkad district, filed a complaint against an invigilator for staring at her 'inappropriately' in the examination hall.The girl in the complaint said that she and other girls who appeared for the NEET exam on May 6, were forced to remove their bra before entering the exam hall, as it had hooks made in metals.According to the rules prescribed by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), metal is one of the prohibited items.She further alleged that a male invigilator stared at her chest 'inappropriately' repeatedly during the exam. The girl could not cover herself as stoles are not allowed as per CBSE rules and complained that she could not complete her exam.The girl filed a complaint at North Town police station Palakkad on May 8 and has approached the Human Rights Commission.

MP: Gangrape victim succumbs to injuries

A sixteen-year-old girl who had been battling for her life for nearly five months after being gangraped in Madhya Pradesh's Sagar, succumbed to her injuries, on Friday.She was raped by two men on December 8, who burnt her alive in an attempt to escape scot-free.The two accused were arrested by the Police.The victim had since been undergoing treatment at a local medical college in Sagar.Even before the Centre passed the amendment in the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act (POCSO) to award death penalty to rapists of minors, Madhya Pradesh had already put a similar law in place, and the horrific incident took place only four days after the state assembly had passed a bill awarding death penalty to those found guilty of raping girls aged 12 and below.

SC Collegium unanimously agrees on elevation of Justice KM Joseph

The Supreme Court Collegium today unanimously agreed in principle to reiterate the recommendation for the elevation of Uttarakhand High Court Chief Justice K M Joseph as a judge of the apex court, after his name was returned by the Centre. The five-member Collegium, comprising Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra and Justices J Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, M B Lokur and Kurian Joseph, after hour-long deliberation decided that Justice Joseph's name should be accompanied with the recommendation of the names of Chief Justices of High Courts for elevation as judges of the Supreme Court. The Collegium, in a resolution, said there was a need for further discussion on the issue of sending other names to the Centre and deferred its meeting till May 16. "The Chief Justice and other members of the Collegium have, on principle, unanimously agreed that the recommendation for appointment of Justice K M Joseph, Chief Justice, Uttarakhand High Court [Parent High Court: Kerala] as a Judge of the Supreme .

PWD scam: Court issues production warrant for Kejriwal's arrested kin

A Delhi court today issued production warrant for Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's relative Vinay Bansal, arrested in connection with an alleged scam in the Public Works Department (PWD), after the Tihar jail authorities failed to produce him. The court took a stern view and directed the jail authorities to explain the absence of Bansal, a nephew of Kejriwal, who was sent to one-day judicial remand yesterday after he fainted in the court room and was rushed to nearby hospital. "The accused has not been produced by jail superintendent, Tihar jail. No intimation from the superintendent regarding his non-production. Production warrant be issued against the accused with a direction to the jail superintendent to explain non-production of the accused. The accused to be brought tomorrow," Additional Sessions Judge Sanjay Khanagwal said. Bansal, through his counsel B S Joon, also moved a bail application on the ground that all allegations were baseless and the FIR filed against him was false .

Woman says BJP MLA's son raped her, seeks appointment with UP CM

A 28-year-old woman has charged the son of a BJP MLA with raping her in 2011 and has written to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath seeking an appointment to apprise him of her problems. The BJP MLA has dismissed the charges and said "it's an attempt by the Samajwadi Party to malign my image". Besides writing to the chief minister, she has sought time through the district administration for the meeting, her lawyer Avdhesh Singh Tomar said here today. The woman, who has threatened to immolate herself if MLA Roshanlal Verma and his son Vinod Verma were not arrested by May 21, has been provided armed security. The district administration is alert with regard to her threat, a senior police official said. Indian journalist held in Australia on people smuggling charges

An Indian journalist, charged with an aggravated people smuggling offence by Australian authorities for facilitating the travel of a "fake media contingent" to attend the Commonwealth Games, will stay in custody for six more weeks, a media report said today. Rakesh Kumar Sharma, 46, was detained along with eight others Indian nationals by Australian Border Force (ABF) officers at the Brisbane Airport in March because his companions' accreditation were not genuine, Brisbane Times reported. The Commonwealth Games were held on the Gold Coast south of Brisbane from April 4-15. The eight, aged between 20 and 37, were allegedly holding temporary activity visas and claiming to be accredited media representatives, the report said. Sharma is described in court documentation as a journalist with a Hindi language newspaper. Prosecutors claim his accreditation was genuine but he "facilitated" the group's travel, the report said. Sharma, who is from Haryana, appeared in Brisbane Magistrates Court .

Police arrested today two persons for allegedly preparing fake gun licences at their shop in the outskirts of Jammu. Over 450 gun licenses have been seized from Vinod and Raju, police said. Punjab: SHO arrested for 'assaulting' cop

Mehatpur SHO Parminder Singh Bajwa, who had booked the Congress's Shahkot assembly bypoll candidate in an illegal sand mining case recently, was arrested by the Jalandhar police today for allegedly assaulting and obstructing an on-duty government official. The Congress nominee for the May 28 by-election, Hardev Singh Laddi Sherowalia, among others, was booked for alleged illegal sand mining in different villages of Jalandhar district. "He (Bajwa) has been arrested and an FIR registered against him. He pushed and assaulted an assistant sub-inspector-rank police officer during the frisking process at the court premises (in Jalandhar) thus preventing him from discharging his duty," Commissioner of Police, Jalandhar, Praveen Kumar Sinha said. Gang of ATM fraudsters busted in JK's Samba, 1 held

Police today claimed to have arrested a member of an inter-state gang allegedly involved in swapping original ATM cards with fake ones and withdrawing money from people's bank accounts in Jammu and Kashmir's Samba district. Dinesh Kumar was arrested yesterday by policemen dressed in civilian clothes who were deployed around the ATM machines in Samba, following many reports of frauds of similar nature in the last couple of months. Police also recovered 18 ATM cards of different banks from Kumar's possession. "The accused was arrested from a Punjab National Bank ATMnear Gas Agency, Samba, when he was trying to dupe one person, namely Kaka Ram, who went there to withdraw cash," a police official said. Jilted man murders lover in Hyderabad

: A 23-year-old man allegedly killed his girlfriend by slitting her throat as she refused to marry him, police said. The man, who allegedly murdered the 21-year-old woman at a resort here, was arrested today, they said. The two had come to the resort yesterday after booking a room online, the police said. There were multiple injuries on the girl's body and her throat, they said, adding that a knife was recovered from the accused. The man, a diploma-holder, was searching for a job, while the woman was preparing for a bank examination, the police said.

Ramanath Rai's aide allegedly attacked in Bantwal

A close associate of Congress leader Ramanath Rai, Kachigudda Sanjeev Kumar was allegedly attacked by unknown miscreants in Bantwal late Thursday night.The incident took place at Sajipamooda, Bantwala, in which four other people including Kumar's wife got injured. Two drug peddlers arrested with heroin in Rajouri

Two drug peddlers were arrested by the police and heroin recovered from them in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district, an officer said today. Police intercepted an SUV in Thanamandi area of the district today and during search recovered nine grams of heroin from its driver, Aijaz Ahmed, and seven grams of heroin from Mohammad Asif, who was travelling in the same vehicle, the police officer said. The two have been arrested and a case has been registered, he said.

Man rapes minor girl in UP, attempts suicide

A 27-year-old man allegedly tried to commit suicide after raping his seven-year-old sister-in-law at a village in Rampur district, police said today. The incident took place last night. The girl's family members have lodged a complaint, they said. In the complaint, they alleged that the man took the girl to the forested area on the pretext of dropping her home. The girl had gone to visit her sister, police said. The man consumed some substance in a bid to end his life. But he and the girl were spotted by villagers and admitted to a hospital, they said. The matter is being investigated, police said.

Boy's body found stuffed in trunk in Amethi

The body of a 10-year-old boy was found stuffed inside a trunk in his home in Amethi, police said today. The incident took place yesterday evening when Mohammad Kaif's parents went to visit their relatives, leaving him and his 5-year-old brother alone in their house in Palpur Takiya village, they said. They had asked their neighbours to keep an eye on the boys, SHO Jagdishpur Shyam Sunder said. However, when they returned, they found Kaif missing. The parents raised an alarm and approached the police. After hours of frantic search in and around the neighbourhood, the police finally found the boy's body in a trunk in the second floor of the house late last night, the SHO said. The boy's father, Rahmat Ali, accused one of his neighbours of killing Kaif. The police lodged an FIR in the case. The police said they were awaiting the post-mortem report.

Manipur, Meghalaya HCs get new chief justices

Two judges from the Jammu and Kashmir High Court have been appointed as chief justices of the Meghalaya and the Manipur high courts. Separate Law Ministry notifications said Justice Ramlingam Sudhakar, who originally belongs to the Madras High Court and is currently functioning as acting chief justice of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court, is appointed as the Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court. Justice Mahammed Yaqoob Mir, also of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court, has been appointed as Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court. Another notification said Justice Alok Aradhe, senior-most judge of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court after justices Sudhakar and Mir, is appointed as acting chief justice of that high court following the elevation of his two seniors.

Man held for fatally beating daughter with stick in Jammu

A man has been arrested in Jammu district for allegedly beating his 18-year-old daughter with a stick that resulted in her death, police said today. Police did not say why Meen Mohammad beat his daughter. He is being questioned by police about the trigger for his anger. Mohammad beat his daughter with a stick over some issue in Jhajjar Kotli area of Jammu district on Monday. This resulted in multiple injuries to her and she succumbed to the injuries, police said.

Guj HC upholds sentences of 19 people in Ode riots case

The Gujarat High Court today upheld the conviction of 19 people but acquitted three persons sentenced by a trial court in the 2002 Ode riot case where 23 members of a minority community were allegedly burnt alive during the Gujarat riots. On a set of appeals filed against the trial court order, a bench of justices Akil Kureshi and B N Karia today upheld the life sentence of 14 convicts as well as the seven-year jail terms given to five others. Three others, who were sentenced to life in prison by the SIT court, were acquitted by the bench. The convicts who were acquitted by the high court are Dilip Patel, Lalji Patel and Natubhai Patel. The high court also upheld the acquittal of 23 others. An SIT court had, in April 2012, sentenced a total of 23 people, out of 47 accused, in the case. It had sentenced 18 of these 23 people to life in prison and five to jail sentences of seven years.
