In a hair-raising incident, a man on Monday morning killed his wife in front of their children in New Delhi's Mangolpuri locality.During the investigation, the kids revealed that their parents used to fight every day and that their father used to thrash their mother frequently.The children with the help of the neighbours took their mother to the hospital where she was declared dead.The accused is absconding and a case has been registered against him.Further investigation is underway.
Almost 20 years after model Jessica Lall was gunned down in a restaurant here, her sister Sabrina, who fought a lengthy legal battle for justice, has said she has moved on and has no objection to the killer being released from jail. Sidhartha Vahishta, better known as Manu Sharma, is serving a life term in Tihar Jail here for the 1999 murder. Lall said she had received a letter from the jail authorities regarding a victim compensation fund and Sharma's release last month. "I replied to that letter and said I had no objection to his release. It's not so much about forgiveness but it's about letting go of a burden, something from which I have moved on. For me, it's about taking a load off me," she told PTI. In her reply to the letter sent by the jail authorities, Lall pointed out that Sharma had been helping inmates during the 15 years he had spent in prison. A BJP MP's son and his friend, arrested for consuming alcohol here in the dry state, were produced in a city court and sent to the Gaya Central Jail under judicial custody today. A wanted criminal was killed and three, including a police personnel, were injured today during an encounter in the Baraula area here, an official said. Special task forces of the Uttar Pradesh and the Haryana police intercepted a car and were fired upon by the vehicle's occupant, Superintendent of Police (SP), UP-STF (West), Rajiv Narain Mishra, said. In retaliatory fire, the criminal, Balraj Bhati, was injured and he was declared brought dead at a hospital, he said. Haryana STF personnel Raj Kumar and two locals were injured during the exchange of fire, the SP said. A Belgian court today sentenced the sole surviving suspect in the Paris attacks, Salah Abdeslam, to 20 years in prison on terror charges over a bloody gun battle with police in Brussels days before his capture in 2016. Abdeslam's co-defendant Sofiane Ayari received the same sentence after the pair were convicted of terrorism-related attempted murder over the shootout in which four police officers were wounded. Judges at the court in Brussels said that "there can be no doubt about their commitment to radicalism" as they handed down the maximum jail term demanded by Belgian prosecutors at the trial in February. Twenty-two suspected Bangladeshi nationals were arrested in Rajasthan's Alwar district for allegedly residing illegally in the area, the police said today. Acting on a tip-off, 33 suspected Bangladeshi nationals, including 11 children, who were allegedly residing illegally in Neemrana town, were taken into custody yesterday, a police officer said. The 22 adults were arrested and produced in a local court today, said Hitesh Sharma, the station house officer (SHO) of Neemrana police station. Sharma claimed there were intelligence inputs about the suspected Bangladeshi nationals being employed at a brick kiln near Mandhan village road. A few of them had managed to secure Aadhaar and other identity cards. The matter has been taken into investigation, the SHO added.

The Bombay High Court today emphasised the need for the state government to make its police force aware of changes in laws and said police should always work towards the welfare of the victim, especially in cases that involved minors or women. A division bench of Justices N H Patil and G S Kulkarni had earlier this month, while permitting a minor victim of rape to terminate her 24-week pregnancy, sought to know from the Maharashtra government if any circular or guidelines were issued to the police on how to handle such cases. The court had said that police should be sensitised on how to handle such cases and should inform the victim, her parents or family about the options they had regarding termination of pregnancy. A college student was killed after he received a head injury while playing cricket in Nadia district, police said today. The incident happened under the jurisdiction of Kalyani police station yesterday, the police said. The body of a minor girl who went missing from a village in Muzaffarpur district since Saturday was found lying in a field and the police said prima facie it appeared to be a case of rape and murder. The police recovered her body from the field, 500 metres away from her residence, at Musahari village yesterday morning, Station House Officer of Musahari Women's police station Jyoti Kumari said. Some villagers spotted the girl's body, with several injury marks and informed the deceased's family members and the police, the SHO said. The body has been sent to Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) Muzaffarpur for post-mortem. "Prima facie, it seems that the girl was killed after rape. A bench of Justices Naresh Patil and G S Kulkarni also directed Maharashtra Advocate General Ashutosh Kumbhakoni to file, within a month, a comprehensive reply on the status of vacancies at child welfare committees and Juvenile Justice Boards across the state, and on all such provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act (JJ Act) that are yet to be implemented.
