Cong slams lawyers for trying to prevent filing of charge sheet in Kathua case

Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) president Ghulam Ahmad Mir today lashed out at lawyers who tried to prevent the Crime Branch officials from presenting the charge sheet in the case of rape-and- murder of an eight-year-old girl in Kathua. "I am surprised over this move. It is politically motivated, obnoxious and conspiracy to achieve something out of this heinous crime for those hindering the process of justice," Mir said in a statement here. The lawyers prevented the Crime Branch officials from entering the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate in Kathua yesterday as the sleuths were going to file the charge sheet in the rape-and-murder case. "The act of hindering the justice process amounts to endorsement of heinous crimes. Shame on them," Mir said.

J-K: 4 bovine smuggle bids foiled, 36 animals rescued

The Jammu and Kashmir police has arrested three persons and rescued 36 bovines from different vehicles as it foiled four bids of bovine smuggling here in the Jammu and Samba districts of the state, an official said today. While in two incidents the drivers managed to escape, the accused were arrested in other two bovine smuggling bids, the official added. According to police, a police team signalled a truck to stop on highway at Tapyal area of Samba district, but the driver on seeing the police personnel tried to escape. And though the vehicle was chased down at Ghagwal, the driver managed to flee from the spot. "Thirteen bovines were found laden inside the vehicle which was being transported illegally without any permission," an official said, adding that the vehicle was seized and efforts are on to nab the driver. In an another incident, a police team claimed to have intercepted an abandoned truck on highway at Nonath and rescued 11 bovines from the vehicle. Police said the vehicle .

INX Media case: Delhi HC issues notice to Karti's CA

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday issued a notice to Karti Chidambaram's chartered accountant (CA) S Bhaskararaman, on a plea filed by Enforcement Directorate (ED) against the bail granted to him by Delhi's Patiala House Court, in connection with the INX Media money laundering case.The next date of hearing is August 16.Bhaskararaman was arrested from a hotel in Delhi on February 16 and was later sent to judicial custody. He was granted anticipatory bail on April 4.On February 28, Karti Chidambaram was arrested at the Chennai airport on his return from the UK, for his alleged role in facilitating FIPB clearance for INX Media Ltd and its directors, Peter and Indrani Mukerjea.Karti allegedly took service charges for getting the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance to INX Media for receiving funds from abroad worth Rs 305 crore in 2007 when his father P Chidambaram was the Union finance minister.

SIT to probe Unnao rape case involving BJP MLA

A special investigation team (SIT) has been constituted to probe the rape of an 18-year-old woman, allegedly by BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar and his brothers, in Unnao and the custodial death of the victim's father. "The SIT will go into the entire gamut of issues involved in the incident," ADG (Law and Order) Anand Kumar told a press conference. Earlier today, Atul Singh, the brother of the rape-accused BJP MLA, was arrested in Unnao. The BJP MLA has rejected the charge as a conspiracy by his opponents. The ADG also said that so far clean chit had not been given to anyone in the matter. The victim's father yesterday died in custody in Unnao, prompting her to charge that he was killed inside jail at the behest of the lawmaker.

Man dies in police custody, family alleges torture by police

After an accused arrested in an alleged suicide case in Kerala's Varapuzha passed away in a hospital on Monday, his family alleged that he was tortured in police custody.Ernakulam Police have begun an investigation into the case."If police is found to be guilty, action will be taken. When he was arrested and underwent medical checkup, he complained of nothing. Others arrested with him did not say of assault in custody," Ernakulam Rural SP told ANI.Sreejith was one of the 10 who drove a fisherman to commit suicide. UP rape case: BJP MLA's brother arrested

Atul Singh, the brother of a rape-accused BJP MLA, was arrested in Unnao early today, police said. According to a police spokesperson, a crime branch team arrested Atul Singh Sengar, on the directions of the state police chief. An 18-year-old woman alleged that she was raped by BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar and his brothers. Yesterday, her father died in custody in Unnao, prompting her to charge that he was killed inside jail at the behest of the lawmaker. Stressing on the need to bring more transparency in the appointment process of Supreme Court judges, Justice J Chelameswar on Monday said the elevation of the High Court judge to the apex court is done on their impression rather than on their performance.Speaking during a panel discussion titled 'The Indian Higher Judiciary: Issues and Prospects', the apex court judge said the one responsible for the selection process must put "assessment on record", which would "eliminate most of the problems"."An assessment of the performance of a high court judge, I am talking about elevation to the Supreme Court, is hardly done. Woman set on fire by husband over family dispute

A 48-year-old woman was set ablaze by her husband over a family dispute, here on Monday.The incident took place at 4 am when Mallesh Goud, 53, poured petrol on his wife, Mangamma, after locking the room of his children.After setting her on fire, he also locked his wife who was in the other room and fled away from the spot.The victim was rescued by her neighbour, who later admitted her to Gandhi Hospital for treatment.She has sustained 80 per cent burn injuries and her condition remains to be critical.According to police, Goud is a drunkard and his drinking habit was one of the reasons behind the fight between the two. Ahmednagar: Sena holds protests against killing of two leaders

CBI moves plea to attach Nirav Modi's UK bank account; court issues LR

A special CBI court here today issued a judicial request to be sent to the UK after the central probe agency moved a petition, seeking to attach a bank account of beleaguered diamond trader Nirav Modi, a key accused in the Rs 12,700-crore fraud in the Punjab National Bank (PNB). CBI counsel Om Prakash told the court that Modi's Barclays bank account in the UK had about 12,79,517 pounds (about Rs 12 crore) and USD 1,244 (over Rs 80,000). The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said its probe had revealed that the bank wanted to terminate its relationship with the Nirav Modi Ltd and was set to pay the money back to the billionaire diamantaire. Om Prakash said the agency believed the money in the account was proceeds of crime. After hearing the agency's plea to attach the account, special CBI court judge S R Tamboli allowed it and issued a Letter Rogatory (LR) to the UK.
