The Delhi High Court on Friday asked the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to file a response on a plea by fugitive jeweller Mehul Choksi's firm Gitanjali Gems in a money laundering case related to the multi-crore rupee Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam.

A 52-year-old man, who was allegedly found roaming near Indo-Pak border here in the Jammu district and was apprehended by the BSF, was handed over to his family members living in Haryana, police said today. The man, identified as Kedar Nath, was allegedly suffering from a brain ailment and had ran away from his home town Panipat, Haryana on March 28, they said. According to a police officer, Kedar Nath, who on Tuesday night was found roaming under suspicious circumstances near the International Border (IB) Border Out Post at Blue Chak in Arnia sector of Jammu, after hectic efforts was found out to be a resident of Haryana. "He was working at a shop of a scrap dealer in Panipat and had ran away from his home," the officer said. Police said after receiving the information of Kedar Nath whereabouts, his family reached Arnia police station and that after some legal formalities he was handed over to his family members.
Three persons were arrested from the North East Express at Rangia station in Kamrup (Rural) district for allegedly carrying 52 bottles of cough syrup illegally, police said. A special team seized the bottles during routine checking. It is suspected that they were carrying the cough syrup to use them as intoxicants, police said. The arrested men hailed from Muzaffarpur in Bihar.

A prisoner, who has been convicted in a murder case, allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in the Parappana Agrahara Jail here, prison officials said. Thirty-one-year old Masthi Kumar from Shivamogga was found hanging using his clothes in the cell, officials said, adding he was lodged in the jail 10 months ago. A probe has been initiated, the officials added.
Social activist Aires Rodrigues today filed a complaint against Goa Power Minister Pandurang Madkaikar, his wife and a government servant in connection with a file related to his bungalow which has allegedly gone missing from the Old Goa panchayat office. In his complaint with the local police, Rodrigues alleged Madkaikar, his wife Jainita, who is also sarpanch of the Old Goa panchayat, and panchayat secretary Ashish Naik were involved in disappearance of the document. The file related to Madkaikar's private bungalow near here which was recently inaugurated, the activist said and alleged gross illegalities in its construction. Senior advocate and former Law Minister Shanti Bhushan today filed a PIL in the Supreme Court seeking clarification on the administrative authority of the Chief Justice of India (CJI) as the master of roster and for laying down the principles and procedure to be followed in preparing it for allocation of cases. He filed the PIL through his advocate and son Prashant Bhushan who wrote a letter to the apex court's secretary general stating that the matter should not be listed before a bench that includes the CJI. In the letter, Prashant also said that it would be appropriate that the petition be listed before three senior-most judges of the top court for allocating it before an appropriate bench. The Delhi High Court on Friday issued a notice to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on a plea of Diamantaire Nirav Modi's uncle and business partner Mehul Choksi's firm Gitanjali Gems, seeking quashing of a money laundering case against the company.The court has sought a reply from the agency by April 11.The PNB in February detected the scam, wherein Modi and Choksi had allegedly cheated the bank to the tune of Rs. 114 billion, with the purported involvement of a few employees of the bank.The scam, which reportedly began in 2011, was detected in the third week of January this year, after which the PNB officials reported it to the concerned agencies.The Enforcement Directorate (ED) registered the money laundering case against Nirav Modi and others on the basis of a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) FIR.Currently, the probe agencies are investigating the matter and have also seized many properties of Modi and Choksi.
A woman has alleged that a youth has uploaded her morphed nude pictures on social networking sites after seeking sexual favours by blackmailing her, police said today. The woman, a government employee in Odisha's Jajpur district, in her complaint has mentioned that the youth, a resident of Kahneipur in Vyas Nagar town, sought sexual favours from her and had threatened to post the photos on the social media, if she did not oblige, the police said. "We have received the complaint from the woman employee on Wednesday evening. On the basis of the complaint, we have registered a case and started an investigation," the Inspector-In-Charge of Korei police station, Chinmayee Sahu, said. The police arrested five persons and rescued 15 bovines as they foiled two bovine smuggling bids in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district, an official said today. A Police party during checking at Manjakote here in the district intercepted a vehicle that was on its way to Kashmir last night, the police officer said. Police rescued 8 bovines, seized the vehicle and booked two persons identified as Mohmmad Hanif and Showkat Hussain, he said, adding that a case has been registered and investigation was underway. In a separate incident, the police foiled another smuggling bid and rescued 7 bovines at Manjakote only. Two persons, identified as Abdul Rehman and Mukhtair Ahmed, were arrested, the official said. A Chinese man has been sentenced to a year in prison for blackmailing a cemetery manager and stealing a casket. The man stole the cinerary casket from the cemetery in Changping district, Beijing in December, 2015, the Changping district people's court of Beijing said in its verdict. He phoned the cemetery manager and asked for 300,000 yuan (USD 47,000) to return the casket, and later lowered the ransom to 45,000 yuan. He was eventually nabbed by the police. The court found him guilty of blackmail and extortion. He was sentenced to one year in prison and fined 2,000 yuan, state-run Xinhua news agency said. A Pakistani intruder was shot dead and another arrested with four kg heroin at the Ramkot Border Out Post area here, a BSF official said. Confirming the killing and arrest of the Pakistani nationals from the Amritsar sector, he said a BSF night patrolling team observed some suspicious movements on the Indian side of the international border. BSF troops rushed to the spot and noticed two Pakistanis carrying something with them, the official said. They were warned to stop, but they did not pay heed and kept coming towards the BSF troops in an aggressive manner, he said. The Pakistani intruders did not stop even after repeated warnings, forcing BSF troops to open fire in self-defence, the official said. A sessions court today reserved its decision on Bollywood superstar Salman Khan's bail plea till tomorrow, his defence counsel said. The actor, who was yesterday convicted by the trial court and sentenced to five years in prison in a 1998 blackbuck poaching case, would now be spending another night in Jodhpur Central Jail. The district and sessions court here heard arguments on the suspension of sentence and bail application before deferring the matter till tomorrow. In his arguments, defence counsel Mahesh Bora said there were various loopholes in the investigation. He argued that no investigation in any of the cases of poaching proved that Salman used firearms.
