Ex-MLA held for attacking IFS probationers in Gujarat

The police today arrested a former MLA in Gujarat for allegedly attacking a group of probationary officers of the Indian Forest Service (IFS) last month. Mahipatsinh Jadeja, the former two-term Independent legislator from Gondal in the district, was arrested from his home at Ribda, about 20 km from here, after the probationary officers filed an FIR against him and three others, Rajkot (rural) Superintendent of Police Antrip Sood. On March 24, when a group of 47 probationers of the IFS 2017 batch was returning to Ahmedabad by bus, Jadeja allegedly hit one of the them with a rod when he alighted from the vehicle, thinking that he was urinating near his house, Sood said. "Jadeja and his three supporters also attacked three other probationers when they came to their colleague's rescue. Petition filed against Supreme Court's amends to SC/ST Act

Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Monday confirmed that the Supreme Court's ratification to make amends to the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (SC/ST) {Prevention of Atrocities} Act (1989) will not go unchallenged and a petition has already been filed to try and convince the apex court to reconsider its decision."I wish to convey that today we have filed a petition on the judgment by Supreme Court on the SC/ST act. Man dies of electrocution in Kolkata

One man has died of electrocution after touching a partially damaged electrical distribution box in the city's West Port area, police said today. Prasenjit Mondal, a 22-year-old resident of Malda district, collapsed on the pavement as soon as he came in touch with the switch box, while crossing the Dumayune Avenue, last night, a senior officer said. Mondal, a temporary labourer, was engaged by the Bridge & Roof Company for the repair work of a swing bridge in the area, he said. "He was first taken to BNR Central Hospital and then to the SSKM hospital. The doctors at SSKM hospital declared him brought dead. A post-mortem examination of the body will be done today," he added.

Traffic chaos in Lutyens' Delhi over Dalit protests

Traffic came to a standstill in Lutyens' Delhi today as hundreds of protesters marched in unity against the dilution of the SC/ST Act. The protesters gathered at Mandi House protesting the Supreme Court order banning automatic arrest and registration of cases for alleged harassment of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. They blocked road outside the Mandi House Metro Station, bringing traffic to a halt as commuters faced inconvenience while travelling towards ITO and other stretches. The protesters also blocked one of the carriageways of Barakhamba Road affecting the traffic on the stretch, police said. Four top cops suspended in connection with missing arms case

The Manipur government has suspended four high-ranking police officials, including an IPS officer, in connection with the case of missing weapons from 2nd Manipur Rifles armoury between 2014 and 2018, an official statement has said. The officers will not be allowed to leave the premises of the state police headquarters without the consent of higher authorities, the statement issued by Joint Secretary, Department of Personnel, L Bikram, said on Saturday. Altogether, 56 auto 9 mm pistols along with 58 magazines were found missing when the commandant of 2nd Manipur Rifles recently conducted a routine examination of the arms corte (armoury), Chief Minister N Biren Singh had told media on Saturday. The missing arms belonged to a batch of 570 pistols that were received by the state police headquarters in 2014 for supply to 2nd Manipur Rifles, he had said. PWD executive engineer arrested for unaccounted cash

An executive engineer of Odisha's Public Works Department (PWD) was arrested by vigilance sleuths after over Rs 3.28 lakh alleged unaccounted cash was recovered from his car, the police said today. Acting on a tip-off about collection of huge amount as bribe by Niroj Kumar Dash, executive engineer, roads and building, Puri, who was proceeding towards Bhubaneswar, vigilance officers intercepted his vehicle on Saturday night at Pipili toll gate, a vigilance release said. A sum of Rs 3,28,500 was found from the possession of Dash. On being asked, Dash failed to account satisfactorily for possession of such a huge amount of cash, it said. The vigilance wing registered a case against Dash, who was arrested, forwarded to the court yesterday and he was remanded to judicial custody till April 13. Haryana student commits suicides over exam score

A girl student in Jind district of Haryana on Sunday committed suicide over not being able to score good marks in exams, police said on Monday.The Class 11 student from Siwah village shot herself with her father's revolver because she was not able to top her class exams, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sunil Kumar said.Her father, Vedpal, found her dead in the washroom along with his revolver, the DSP said.Anjali, who got her exam result on Saturday, was studying in Indus Public School.Eldest of her three siblings, Anjali was the daughter of the village head. She had two sisters and a brother at home.The police have handed over the girl's body to her parents after conducting the post-mortem, the DSP said.An investigation into the matter has been initiated.

No link with CBSE official: CBSE papers leak accused

The three accused, held for their alleged roles in leaking the class 12 Economics paper, have denied any link with the CBSE official, suspended for 'laxity' in his duty, said a police official, privy to the probe. The police said the arrested teachers Rishabh, 29 and Rohit, 26 of the Mother Khazani Convent School in Bawana, and private coaching centre tutor Tauqeer, 26 were quizzed over their possible links with CBSE official K S Rana after his suspension, but they denied having any truck with him. Rana had been entrusted the responsibility of delivering the Economics paper to the Mother Khazani Convent School. SC to hear TN's plea against Centre on Cauvery Management Board

The Supreme Court today agreed to hear a contempt plea of the Tamil Nadu government against the Centre for not constituting the Cauvery Management Board (CMB). A bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud posted the matter for April 9. "We understand Tamil Nadu's difficulty of not getting water. We will resolve the issue. List the matter for April 9," the bench said. HC to hear plea for court-monitored probe into CBSE paper leak

The Delhi High Court today agreed to hear a plea for a court-monitored probe into the recent leaks of the Maths and Economics CBSE exam papers of class 10 and 12, respectively. The plea was mentioned before a bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar which agreed to hear it today. The petition, moved by NGO Social Jurist, has sought that the class 10 Maths exam be held in April, rather than July as proposed by the authorities. Apart from that, the petition filed by advocate Ashok Agarwal has sought that liberal marks be awarded to the students in the Maths and Economics re-examination.

Youth booked for sodomising minor boys

A youth has been booked for allegedly sodomising two minor boys in Shahbuddinpur area here, police said today. The FIR was registered against 20-year-old Shavaiz following a complaint by the family of the victims, they said. Girl sexually assaulted in Delhi Saharanpur train

A 16-year-old girl was sexually assaulted by three youths in New Delhi-Saharanpur passenger train following which one of the assailants has been arrested, the police said today. Minor electrocuted in UP

A minor boy was electrocuted after a high tension wire fell on him in Ramnagar village here, while two of his friends who tried to help him were severely injured in the incident. According to police, Vijay Kumar (12) was playing outside with his friends when he came in contact with the live wire yesterday.
