The Punjab Assembly today passed a breach of privilege motion against Leader of Opposition Sukhpal Singh Khaira for his alleged objectionable remarks against the ruling Congress MLAs over the issue of illegal sand mining. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Brahm Mohindra said Khaira had first made these baseless allegations against Congress MLAs on November 29, 2017, and repeated these remarks on March 26 this year. Khaira had alleged that every Congress MLA was involved in illegal sand mining. Bringing the breach of privilege motion against Khaira of the AAP, Mohindra told the Assembly, "I have gone through the record. He was speaking on the Governor's address and made the false and irresponsible allegations." Mohindra said that "baseless" allegations levelled by Khaira not only breached the privileges of the treasury members but also violated the sanctity of the House. The matter should be referred to the privilege committee, he said.

Hundreds of cheques were fradulently issued from the accounts of National Peroxide and some other companies of Wadia Group, as per a complaint lodged by a senior official of the conglomerate. The complaint was recently lodged with the N M Joshi Marg Police station and then transferred to the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Mumbai police, said a police official today. Shailesh Chouhan, chief financial officer of National Peroxide, said in the complaint that 1,160 cheques were issued to a company called "RBIM Sales" and some other companies whose names resembled the names of Wadia Group firms between 2008 and 2017. The cheques, totalling Rs 37 crore, were issued from the bank accounts of National Peroxide and other Wadia Group companies in Canara Bank and State Bank of India, Chouhan told police. In the wake of reports claiming paper leaks, the CBSE today announced re-examination in the two papers. On Monday, panic had gripped students of Class 12 following claims on social media that the economics paper had been leaked even though the Central Board of Secondary Education denied there was any slip up. The Jammu and Kashmir State Vigilance Organisation today booked two directors of the Rural Development Department and eight others an alleged corruption case. The case was registered on the basis of allegations regarding purchase of stationery items, banners and hoardings by the Rural Development Department from a select group of businessmen, causing a huge loss to the state exchequer, an SVO officer told PTI. The case was registered against two directors, three assistant commissioners of development, four district panchayat officers of the Rural Development Department, and branch manager of the National Cooperative Consumers Federation of India Limited in Jammu, the officer said. The Government Railway police (GRP) today arrested two Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) jawans in an inebriated condition from Bihar's Katihar district. Katihar GRP SHO Dhananjay Kumar said that GRP arrested the two jawans from Rajdhani Express at Katihar junction. The jawans were returning home to Chandigarh and Lucknow on vacation, SHO said adding they boarded the 12423 Dibrugarh-New Delhi Rajdhani Express at New Jalpaiguri junction in West Bengal. On suspicion, GRP's escort party questioned them but they misbehaved and were found them drunk, he said adding that medical test will be conducted on both. The bodies of a 20-year-old woman and a one-year-old girl were found on rail tracks between Virar and Vasai stations today, police said. A case of accidental death was registered following the recovery of the bodies, which were sent for post-mortem, they said. According to the police, the deceased were not yet identified, but they were believed to be mother and daughter. It was still not clear if it was a case of accident or suicide, they added.
In a bizarre incident, a man killed his elder brother with an axeat Nankhari in Shimla district, 135 km from here, police said. Following an altercation between the two, younger brother Mukesh (24) allegedly attacked his elder brother Sunil (32) with an axe and killed him in the presence of two minor children of the deceased, they said. The horrified children ran away from the spot, police said. After the youngsters told villagers about the incident, ward panch informed the police, which arrested the accused and recovered the weapon from him, they police officials said. Mukesh had mutilated the body of Sunil beyond recognition, they said. A case was registered and investigations are in progress, Nankhari police station in-charge Chintamani said.
The Bombay High Court today granted bail to three men, who are accused, along with others, of killing a Muslim IT professional in Pune in 2014 after they being "provoked" by the speech of the leader of a Hindu right-wing group. Justice Mridula Bhatkar granted bail to Vijay Gambhire, Ajay Lalge and Ganesh Yadav, maintaining her earlier observation that their act was not premeditated. She had granted bail to them in January 2017, while noting in the order that the men had acted without premeditation as they were "provoked in the name of religion". The Maharashtra government challenged the order in the Supreme Court, which sent it back to the high court, asking it to decide it afresh. The Himachal Pradesh High Court today rapped the Central Bureau of Investigation over the tardy pace of probe into the sensational Kothkai rape-murder case, and summoned the CBI chief to appear before it on April 18. Police had yesterday rescued a 15-day-old baby girl, who was about to be sold and had arrested a 23-year-old woman identified as Manga, they said. Based on information provided by her, police today arrested six more persons from different locations including the prime accused Gangadhar Reddy (32), a native of East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, Deputy commissioner of police (Shamshabad Zone) PV Padmaja said. The Government of India on Wednesday extended the deadline for linking Aadhaar with welfare schemes to June 30, in accordance with a supreme court ruling.The notification extending the deadline was issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.Earlier, the Supreme Court had upheld the March 31 deadline for welfare schemes.Earlier on March 27, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) extended its deadline for linking Aadhaar with Permanent Account Number (PAN) to June 30.The Supreme Court, in a ruling last month, had said that the deadline to mandatorily link Aadhaar with various services such as mobile phone, banking and insurance and products would stand extended indefinitely till judgement on the petitions pending before it is pronounced.
Sand mafia members allegedly opened fire at the vehicle of a senior police official who was on a patrolling duty in the district, police said today. The Supreme Court today sought response of the Uttar Pradesh government on a plea challenging an Allahabad High Court order rejecting the bail plea of the proprietor of a firm which supplied oxygen to a government hospital in Gorakhpur where scores of children died last year. Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for Manish Bhandari who is in jail for last seven months, said that it was an admitted position that the children died of Japanese Encephalitis and not due to short supply of oxygen. He referred to the stand of the state government and added that the accused has been suffering due to media trial.
