A Bhavnagar court today rejected the bail application of suspended IAS officer Pradeep Sharma who was arrested on March 9 for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 25 lakh. He had moved the court, claiming that the Anti-Corruption Bureau's FIR was "ill intentioned" as it was filed in 2018 over a case which was said to have taken place in 2008-09. He sought bail saying that he had already spent the last 20 months in jail. The court of special ACB judge S R Bateriwala also rejected Sharma's bail application. The officer has also moved the Gujarat High Court for quashing the FIR. The high court had granted him bail in a money laundering case being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The Jantata Congress Chhattisgarh (JCC) today alleged that BJP's Rajya Sabha MP Ramvichar Netam kept the Election Commission in dark by not disclosing information about a firm in which his wife had served as a director and demanded cancellation of his membership. JCC spokesperson Sanjeev Agrawal also demanded that a criminal case be filed against Netam. "In his affidavit filed before the Election Commission in June 2016, Netam didn't mention about Garima Advisory Private Limited in which his wife Pushpa Devi Netam was a director," he said. A couple and their minor daughter died allegedly after consuming poison in southeast Delhi's Govindpuri over some family dispute, police said today. The deceased were identified as Vicky (35), Lalita, and their six-year-old daughter. It was stated by family members of the deceased that the couple and their daughter took some poison, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South East) Chinmoy Biswal said, adding that a family dispute was the reason behind taking this extreme step. A 66-year-old woman was arrested and her minor granddaughter apprehended for allegedly stealing two pairs of earrings from a showroom in northwest Delhi's Mukherjee Nagar, police said today. They had visited a jewellery showroom to buy earrings on March 22, but later left from there saying they did not like any of them, the police added. The manager of the showroom found that two pairs of earrings were missing and in the CCTV footage, the woman and his granddaughter could be seen stealing them, the police said, adding a case was registered in the matter. Yesterday, they visited the same market to commit another theft but were spotted by the manager who identified them and informed the police. Subsequently, the elderly was arrested and her granddaughter apprehended, the police added.
A 35-year-old man was today seriously injured when a person attacked him with a sword in Bihar's Sitamarhi district, police said. The man sustained injuries on his neck and head in the attack by an 18-year-old person near Radhaur Mor on Sitamarhi-Sursand highway, a police officer said. Sitamarhi District Magistrate Rajiv Roshan said the victim's condition is stated to be serious, and he has been referred to Sadar hospital after administering first aid at a nearby clinic. The reason behind the attack is yet to be ascertained, he said. Irate locals later set the attacker's house on fire in Adalpur village, the DM said, adding, the "situation was under control".
The post-mortem examination report of the body of a man who had allegedly uploaded in social media sex videos featuring him and another woman last year, revealed that he had been burnt alive after being stabbed, police said. The half-burnt body of Unmay Padhi was recovered from Kuakhai river bed at the outskirts of the state capital on March 21. His laptop, mobile phones and motor bike was also torched. The report said the attackers hit Padhi on the head, stabbed him in the stomach and set him on fire. The police on Saturday had detained four persons, including a girl whose sex video was made viral by the victim, for interrogation. Padhi, a resident of Badagada area in the city, used to work in a private educational institution. Over 50 intimate video clips featuring him along with a woman colleague of Bhadrak district went viral on social media in 2017 and also days before the murder. A special POCSO court today sentenced three men to 20 years in jail for the gangrape of a 16-year-old girl at Kheralu here a year ago. Special judge B S Kala sentenced Sanjaygiri Goswami, Jayantiji Thakor and Nagji Vaghari to 20 years in jail and fined them Rs 17,000 each. The court also ordered that the convicts would undergo an additional two years in jail if they failed to pay the fine. A case of gangrape was filed by the victim against the three men at the Kheralu police station around a year back. The three men were arrested the next day, the police said. While awarding the sentence, the court relied upon the victim's statements given before a doctor and a magistrate as preliminary evidence. It also considered the DNA test reports that were submitted.

A television journalist who had complained about threats to his life after he carried out a sting operation on illicit sand mining was today mowed down by a truck, triggering a demand from the Congress for a CBI probe into the death. The main accused in the rape and murder case of a minor girl in Nagon district last week has been arrested, police said today. Five persons, including two teenaged boys, raped the 11-year-old girl and set her on fire when she was alone at home in Dhaniabheti Lalung Gaon in Nagon district on March 23. She died the next day. Two more witnesses were today declared hostile in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh alleged fake encounter case, taking the number of such witnesses in the case to 44. The witnesses, Nikunj Dalvadi and Kiran Panchal, examined by the CBI before special judge S J Sharma today did not support the statements they had recorded earlier. So far, 62 witnesses have been examined, of whom 44 have been declared hostile by the CBI, the prosecuting agency. The statements of Dalvadi and Pachal were recorded as 'panch' witnesses for recovering empty cartridges from the policemen after the encounter.
